The American Dream has existed for centuries; however, for some Americans, the dream is already dead. People hope for a better future, but it is difficult when they aren’t given a chance to strive. I believe the American Dream is not achievable to everyone and is slowly drifting away.
In Bob Herbert essay “Hiding from Reality” he explains that America will never get back to the way it was once due to the economy being in ruins. When the Great Recession took place the economy was failing which caused millions of people to lose their jobs and according to Herbert, it will most likely “take many years, perhaps a decade or more, to get employment back to the level at which one could fairly say the economy is thriving” (Herbert). Therefore, people will do anything to get a job in order to provide for their family even if it doesn't pay well causing a person to have a second job. There is still a fear of being laid off as there is not enough money to pay for workers and with the rise of technology the need for workers is decreasing as machines are taking away jobs. Many today believe that the American Dream is dead. Due to issues of the economy and people not caring for eachother. Though they forget what the American Dream is. That dream is a promise of a new life and a better future. Not just for you but for your generations beyond you.
To me the American Dream is something in the past, and it no longer applies to the present American society. The American Dream fueled our nation from the beginning. The American dream was in the mind of immigrants coming to America in search of a new and better life, a new beginning where you can start fresh and reinvent yourself and become successful. But now the Dream no longer exist in our nation, but it still exists in the mind of immigrants. America was a place where immigrants came to seek a brighter future not only for themselves but also for their children. The majority of people I interviewed said something along the lines of, “the American dream is to be given a chance to do something or be something you want to be.” This opinion seems to be too optimistic. Everyone wants more than what they have. It’s not enough to be given the chance, you have to succeed. What it takes to succeed is an entirely different aspect of the American dream.

I feel that the American dream does still exist. Although the nation has changed in many ways, anyone can chase their dream. Many years ago today, the United States of America was the prime example of prosperity and opportunity. It established America with the idea that its citizens would be guaranteed life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Today, it is true that people have liberties and are free to pursue happiness. However, in recent years, in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Unemployment, growing economy inequality, and medical care have skyrocketed. Despite the odds, the American Dream is still a goal that many people strive for and hope to reach. In fact, an essay written by Brandon King, The American Dream: Dead, Alive or on Hold? He says, “the American dream is a dream in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with the opportunity for each according to his/her ability and achievement…” (King 610-611).
