3.A. The main points I learned about this video was that the American population is suffering from a bad food diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and very fixated on treating health problems with medical drugs. I learned that people thrive on a plant diet and do not have to eat animal products in order to be healthy. I also learned that the proper food diet and physical exercise regimen can reverse many bad health conditions including multiple sclerosis and prevent many detrimental health problems like cardiovascular disease and obesity. B. The thoughts and ideas presented in this video were very interesting. It was great seeing the before and after pictures and health status of people who were on heavy loads of medication for health problems. Seeing the after pictures of people who made drastic food diet and physical exercise changes along with an updated health status of the person no longer having their previous health issue, was a really strong reflection of how important it is to have a healthy lifestyle. So, the thoughts of doctors and nutritionists in a way “prescribing” a healthy food diet and exercise plan, as a way for people to improve their health problem and ultimately eradicate the problem, is far better than giving people medication to just treat a problem that will allow them to continue living unhealthy. Additionally, the medicology term described by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, suggests that the American population sees medication as the solution to a healthy lifestyle. I
In this critical response to the article America’s Food Crisis and How to Fix it by Bryan Walsh. I am going to talk about how animals are being harmed and are given antibiotics to keep them from becoming sick, where the farmers put all the waste from the animals, and how people could fix it.
America is one of the largest countries in the world, and the population is one of the largest also; but not in numbers, unless those numbers are on a scale and coincide with the amount of excess fat that is on the average American. In asking why Americans are so overweight, the fast food industry is not to blame entirely. Although Americans consume more fast food than any other nation and the mass of the population reflects this fact, no one is forcing anyone to eat fast food. Americans eat so much fast food because they are lazy, hurried, addicted, and financially downtrodden. Because of these lifestyles and misfortune, America has become overweight-- an epidemic for which there does not seem to be a cure.
Consumers have become increasingly detached from their food as America’s food system grows larger and continues to ruin the environment. The main problem is that most consumers do not know how their consumption habits affect the ecosystem around them. Nor do they know about how their food was produced. Information about how and where the food is being produced and wasted is essential, so people can shop responsibly. Short of legislation, Americans make choices at the grocery store. It is essential for all Americans to cast in a vote with their dollars to change the way that food is produced in the United States resulting in more sustainable food being more accessible in the aisles of the grocery store for all Americans.
In the United States of America, there is a current epidemic of obesity throughout the country. Every age group is affected by this unfortunate trend. Even children are not immune to the national obesity problem. For a country that has an abundance of job opportunities, educational opportunities, and financial opportunities, it is a sad statement of fact that far too many people are tipping the scales in unhealthy ways. It is a fact that a disproportionate amount of the nation's citizens are dangerously overweight. If the country as a whole wishes to reverse this disparaging state of affairs, then the first thing to do is to determine why so large a percentage of the population is suffering in this way. People who are suffering from obesity or who are dangerously overweight encounter a myriad of health concerns both physically and mentally. There has even been proved a correlation between obesity and lower life expectancy (Flicker 2010). Two of the many reasons why the Americans have such a problem with obesity is the fact that there the diets of most Americans are heavily based on corn or corn-based products and that Americans lead a more sedentary and inactive lifestyle than people in other nations.
The agricultural industry: the farms, plants, animals, and farmers, have supported this great country for so long, but lately we have turned our backs on it. Today, we live in a materialistic society, people wanting more and better items, not settling for products that will accomplish the same job. From looking at the fruits and vegetables in the grocery store, we see the bruised or smaller ones left, while the big and brightly colored ones are selected first. In our society today, changes are constantly being made to help expand and evolve the agricultural industry, but it has yet been able to do so. To this day farmers across this nation have not been completely successful in providing for the people who make up this country. In the stores
The Effectiveness of Forks Over Knives In his documentary Forks Over Knives, Lee Fulkerson sheds a light on the main cause to heart diseases and diabetes through the help of Dr. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn who have spent many years researching the negative effects of consuming refined, processed, and animal based foods. Fulkerson also seeks guidance from Dr. Lederman and Dr. Pulde to show, through example, what a whole food, plant-based diet can do from people who are struck with these life-threatening diseases as well as someone, like Fulkerson, who lives life without any major diseases but can still benefit greatly from the diet switch. With the use of statistics, research and science, real-life examples, and visual aids Fulkerson
Pollen explains that the reason why people in the United States are more prone to becoming obese or having health related problems is due to the term called the “Western Diet”. One of the reasons why the author believes that the “Western Diet” is the reason why people have health issues is due how the food industry does not provide the accurate nutritional values of what Americans are suppose to consume of a daily basis. In today’s society people tend to consume more foods that contain preservatives and chemicals, which were not intended to be in foods. However, due to the fact that Americans consume foods that are unhealthy, they do not know that they are increasing their chances of having the metabolic syndrome. Pollen also claims that health industry is to blame for the “Western Diet”. The reason why the author blames the health industry is because they use these false advertisements to develop new prescriptions and treatment
In the United States, there are several problems occurring, but people would rather go on with their lives as if everything is fine .Being unaware of distressing circumstances is less arduous than being aware. But being aware allows one to adjust, because if people are knowledgeable than they are able to prevent or control the situation.
Obesity is plaguing America and it is not surprising that fast food is contributing to the epidemic. The definition of onesity is when an individual is thirty percent more overweight from their normal age and height. Obesity is the largest public health concern of today. A stunning thirty five percent of the population is obese.
The obesity epidemic in America is a serious problem. Over the years there have been many proposed solutions to help reverse the effects obesity has on American society. The cause of this problem is most often blamed on fast food alone. However, upon closer inspection, the problem is not just fast food. It’s the rest of the American diet. With a society so deeply permeated with food culture, it becomes extremely difficult for the average American to avoid fast food and junk food at all costs. In addition, most proposed solutions suggest for Americans to stop eating unhealthy foods altogether. This solution is not effective in a place like America where food is as apart of American culture as the American flag itself. The best solution to help
Obesity has always been around, however what could be the main source as to why apparently many people are overweight? Fast food could be the answer. As fast food is created by the media and advertisements to be something delicious, irresistible, and affordable, making people feel a need to invest their money to these types of food. When people fall into these advertisements they do not notice all the ingredients put in these foods that affect your health. They see only what the media wants to portray the food they are sponsoring. The availability of restaurants is also a key factor that plays in part due that it creates effortless access and is available with urgency. Factors such as advertising, no background of the ingredients contained, and convenience cause fast food to be a significant reason as to why people are obese.
A full-scale epidemic is currently sweeping over the nation of America. This plague is infamous for causing diabetes, heart diseases, cancer, and numerous other ailments. It affects one in four Americans and approximately 400,000 people die from it each year (“Obesity”). This disease that I am referring to is unbiased, as it is capable of affecting anyone and everyone, even children. Today, obesity is the leading cause of a multitude preventable deaths. There are many consequences of obesity, from medical to psychological ones. In order to conquer this growing problem, one must first understand what causes it.
Soul food was born out of necessity and continued as a result of poverty. Slaves had no choice but to make the left over undesirable pork parts like pig feet and intestines edible. The fat married to limited seasonings and whatever else was overgrown or surplus in the field was cooked with love for nourishment to provide energy to endure the long hot days performing labor intensive tasks in the element. African Americans were freed from slavery and now even multiple generations away from that period in time as a population the struggle continues in many parts of the country to locate healthy food. This is because ” food insecurity” prevails event today (Walker & Cunningham, 2014 p. 165).
That being the case in economically challenging times, these foods will certainly be sought out. Another contention that the video made was: how the health care system is a money making arrangement not based on prevention and wellness, but based on profit through disease intervention (Mostly Magic, 2009). This contention is profound, and dealing with on a patient level, by demanding every preventative and wellness option from the physician are the patients right.
While I watched the segments, thoughts fluttered through my mind. As an individual I, should know better to obtain a healthier diet due to various diseases that are in my family’s medical history. I thought back to when my sister and I were younger, how healthy and thin we once were. As we started to consume foods that weren’t good for us but good to us, we then gained weight and lacked exercise. Food businesses produce food they know that aren’t upright for us but produce junk for profit.
