When we were younger, we were taught that the American Revolution changed America and the lives of many people. The defeat of Britain in the Revolutionary war led to victory and freedom for the colonies. After the French and Indian war, the British were drowning in debts. The only way they knew how to pay this debt was by taxing the colonists. First came the Sugar Act. The British would tax the colonists on goods such as sugar, coffee, flour, and lumber. The colonists were not happy, but they still agreed to pay the taxes. Then came the Stamp Act. The British imposed taxes on all paper documents in the American colonies. This angered the colonists, beginning the age of the Revolution. The colonists believed that these taxes were unconstitutional because they believed that taxes could only be imposed by representatives within the colonies. This idea of taxation without representation became the colonists’ main argument against the taxes the British were enforcing. With each law passed by the British Parliament, the colonists’ anger grew and their obedience began to wither. More taxes came with more hostilities between the two nations. The taxation on tea in the colonies led to the American Revolution. The colonists had had enough and could not take it anymore. To show their opposition towards the British Parliament, a group of colonists from Massachusetts disguised themselves as Native Americans, snuck onto a boat, and dumped tons of tea into the Boston Harbour.
