THE ANNOUNCER is a character driven story with strong potential. The idea of a successful businessman giving up the security of his stable and financially secure and swanky life for an unpredictable and erratic career as a voice announcer is highly engaging.
The premise is a great set up for conflict, drama, humor, and character transformation. The script conveys strong themes about never giving up on one’s dream. The tone is dramatic, but with a wonderful blend of humor. There's also a strong, inspiring pitch to the story.
Steve’s goal to become a working announcer and the grand master at the circus is clear and the stakes are personal. He’s risking his family and his home. Moreover, Steve’s inner goal is to find his own voice.
There are many smart story choices that

Make sure to highlight that his coughing and losing his voice is psychological. This really gets lost and it’s so important to his character growth. Most of all, it’s not really clear what emotionally chokes his voice.
The audience has to understand what prevents him psychologically from performing. It could be connected to his father. It could be as simple as recognizing that he’s achieving his father’s dream and feels as if he’s betraying him. Maybe he suffers from panic attacks/anxiety and he has to find a way to overcome it like focusing on an object until he learns to resolve it internally in the third act. Once he realizes what blocks his voice, then he can go on.
Steve is a terrific character. He's extremely likable and the audience roots for him. He has a strong range of emotion. His dialogue as an announcer is solid. It's his inner conflict that requires more clarity. At the end he undergoes a powerful character transformation. Betsy is very likable. She supports her husband. She nicely confronts Katherine about how she has lost her voice to Darren. It’s a well crafted subplot that supports the main
Danticat uses her Uncles loss of voice, to show us how different and hard it can be to not have a voice at all. When Danticat was 9 years old, her uncle was diagnosed with throat cancer and the doctors told him that he would need a radical laryngectomy to save his life. Danticat recalls her uncle, a bishop, having a grand voice, a voice that would invoke people to listen when she states, “he would model Fignolé’s forceful and direct Creole diction and speak in a clear, powerful bass, allowing only a few well-chosen pauses” (Danticat p.31) However, as a bishop, her father recalls a time when he’d watched his brother give a
Whenever he had a part where he felt his relationship was in trouble, he would change his voice to the universal “guy going through relationship crisis” voice. You would here is voice quake and soften when his relationship seemed to be at stake. The one part where I think he could have done better is when he first finds out that his girlfriend is cheating on him with a high school student. He seemed too soft spoken when confronting Agnes and Chuck. If I found out my girlfriend was cheating on me with some square I would have been furious and not so passive in voice in the situation. I understand that his script made him speak like that, but I think he definitely could have put a whole lot more anger in his voice in that
Once he came out he became relaxed psychologically from the inside as he doesn’t have to worry and stress out anymore about what might the judge say. He also started taking movies of himself. As he says “In the movies I talk and tell the camera who I am, what I think I am about”(279). In Steve’s movies he tells the camera who he believe he is and that he is a human being no mater of his race and that he is not a monster like what some people think he is. The purpose of these movies is to prove people wrong.
Yes, this character was very successful with his vocal choices. The range of his vocal tone within each scene added depth to his character. For example, when he confronts Jackie about their relationship, he softens his voice to show his pain, but also strengthens it to illustrate that his pain also comes from a place of anger.
Steve greatest struggle is found within himself while he questions if he is a monster and he is forced to question on
I ain’t got nothing between my butt and the ground but a rag.STEVE I hear that”(Myers part 2).This quote shows that Steve some type relationship between King who was involved in the robbery and sometimes friends can get you in trouble.Later on in the novel it says “If I had a crew, I could get paid. All you need is a crew with some heart and a nose for the cash”.This quote shows King talking to Steve about the robbery and he is trying to persuade him into doing to robbery with him.So I think if Steve was never friends with King he would have never worried about that
Steve’s thoughts and emotions created a justification in his mind for his violent and harassing behaviors. According to his tapes, he sees himself on the good side, doing bad only to bullies and people who deserve it. He sees himself as loyal and caring. He believes that he has an agreeable and openness to experience personality when in reality and based on his external personality traits, he is the exact opposite. His behaviors caused harassment to many, created a sense of tension within the workplace and created separation between the workers. His neuroticism, extroversive and conscientiousness personality relates directly with his intentionally violent behaviors.
EVALUATION: One of the main themes that sticks out to me is the theme of gender stereotypes. Janie Crawford goes through the entire story experiencing plenty of enforced gender roles and is treated as less than her worth because of her gender. Joe treats Janie as an object, he beats
I was taken aback by the actor’s ability to transform his whole body, voice included, into a seven year old boy’s. The enthusiastic pitch in his voice and the rising and falling in energy it carried was unique to a seven year old, and was portrayed very well. David’s transformation throughout the rest of the performance took the audience through his several stages of his trauma and his aging body. By the end of the performance, David’s voice was hardly
Previously, the show was due to end over Steve's rumored feud with show executives over a raise and change of venue. He also refused to sign a new contract unless his terms were met. They were not. Because of this, the comedian-turned-entrepreneur partnered with his talent agency and all sides managed to retool the eponymous show.
He doesn’t understand me even knowing people like King… He wonders what else he doesn’t know. That is why I take the films of myself. I want to know who I am” (Myers 281). Steve does not know he is.
The Director has shown the audience that without gaming, Billy would be nothing but a person selling sauce. This can be seen as, in every interview he is usually filmed in his restaurant or in his study. On the other hand, Steve was shown more of a family guy and talented. You can see these qualities in him as he was filmed in many different places, such as, the playground, Swimming pool and also in his garage. The director showed Steve’s talents through making him play the drums, the piano and also adding a clip of Steve playing basketball and teaching.
It wasn't very difficult finding the voice in my novel as it is a first person story which includes many self written accounts from the main characters. The voice in my novel is provided by Cat and Joel who are the main characters. Each of them have very strong opinions about each other and feelings that they were not afraid to share throughout the story. Cat is slightly prejudice towards Joel and immediately labels him as a bad person due to their previous experiences together. Joel however, is not very sure of Cat at the beginning but slowly realizes that he most likely will not end up befriending Cat at all. Cat has a fear of losing her seemingly perfect family life while Joel has the fear of losing his mother to a no good boyfriend. This
Finally, Steve’s last story was about death. At this point I was thinking he had gone through enough and finally was going to gain the happiness he deserved. Unfortunately I was wrong. He had been diagnosed with cancer. He physically saw that in his scan there was a tumor. He went through everything you have to go to when you get diagnosed. He had planned to tell his children, prepare his loved ones, and set everything out for his family. After all he had gone through to live a happy life, there was the brick he was talking about. Eventually Steve had a miracle. The cancer ended up being cured.
Despite him trying out various vocal exercises with different therapists, it is made obvious to us that the
