According to the National Abortion Federation, in the last thirty years, the Army Of God has been responsible for 383 death threats, 100 butyric acid attacks, 41 bombing, 3 kidnappings, 383 death threats, and 373 physical invasions of abortion providers. The Army of God is an underground Christian Fundamentalist group consisting of anti-abortion extremists that began in the 1980’s after the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion. The Army of God uses its Christian roots to promote violence against abortion clinics and reproductive health-care workers. Members of the Army of God follow a manual, which was presumably written at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 1988 when multiple anti-abortion extremists were arrested and jailed for protesting. This manual states the mission of the Army of God and includes instructions on how to carry out violence. This includes instructions for making bombs, how to blockade entrances to abortion clinics, and how to execute butyric acid attacks. Not only does the manual promote violence against abortion providers, but also against the LGBTQ community (National Abortion Federation). The declaration of the Army of God can be found on their website: Beginning officially with the passage of the Freedom of Choice Act – we, the remnant of God-fearing men and women of the United States of America, do officially declare war on the entire child killing industry . . . . Our Most Dread Sovereign Lord
Another pro-life group is known as the Pro-life Action League. This group holds prayer vigils outside abortion facilities and provides sidewalk counseling to women and/or couples seeking abortions. The goal of this is to provide abortion alternatives, counseling, access to pregnancy resources, etc. This group is also involved in public protests to raise awareness of the injustice of abortion; they participate in marches, pickets, prayer vigils, and also raise awareness by holding large abortion pictures on busy streets to show what the end result of abortion is on an unborn child. They also hold a monthly protest at Planned Parenthood in Aurora, one of the busiest Planned Parenthood clinics, and protest pro-abortion politicians and other public figures that oppose the rights of unborn babies. Some of the other objectives of this group are to confront abortionists, abortion promoters, infiltrate pro-choice group meetings, and provide training to pro-life activists to help them organize effective programs and become successful pro-life leaders. I have discussed four very different groups, half are pro-choice and half are pro-life. While researching groups actively participating in rallying for or against abortion, there were so many with different tactics and resources available for both sides of the abortion debate.
While the pro-choice group has political support, the pro-life members have ideals centered on ethics. Such ethics derive from religious beliefs, as those of Randall Terry, “leader of the militant anti-abortion group: Operation Rescue” (Randall Terry). Terry has led many protests at abortion clinics, causing public disruption and more than fifty arrests. Along his side are his wife and members of his church. This further shows the kind of people in support of life for the child to be. Although their reason to protest is rational, the methods for spreading their ideas are questionable. NAF (National Abortion Federation) has “reported more than five thousand crimes against pro-choice organizations, clinic members, and even new reports” (Raw Story). Among these crimes are, burglary, vandalism, trespassing, and stalking. In other words, these people claim to be pro-life, but will put lives in danger to send a message.Represented above is a political cartoon of a man holding up a sign saying: “PRO-government in your private LIFE.” This image suggests that being pro-life will lead to government intrusion in a woman’s privacy. The fact that a man is holding the sign, further emphasizes the growing support from men in this
The Army of God is just a North American terrorist group which has a strong religious background and also strongly disagrees with the notion that abortions are a woman’s right to choose.
The second attack is on human life. The attack is that abortion are a way of life and that black and white are not equal. This goes against what God said.
- The overwhelming majority of abortion clinic—88%—experienced at least one form of harassment in 2008. 87% reported picketing, 42% were picketing with patient blocking, and 21% cited incidents of vandalism. And more shockingly, nearly one-fifth of all of the largest abortion facilities reported a bomb threat. (Jones, 2011)
As in Alexander Hamilton’s “Farmer Refuted” and John Adams’s “Thoughts on Government,” the Virginia Declaration begins from the premise that men are by nature “equally free and independent.” Government by consent arises through a contract protecting the enjoyment of those rights and the subsequent “happiness
The Supreme Court decision in Buck v. Bell displays some clues to the values of early twentieth century American society. The interpretation of the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution is the lynchpin of the decision, and the values of the court can be derived from it. In this essay I will demonstrate that the ambiguity of the Amendment in question has significant consequences, the ethics of the interpretation of the Amendment is derived form the paternalistic nature of the Constitution, and that equality of the law is subservient to the desire for a homogeneous and comfortable cultural environment.
This article documents the Republicans in the Iowa legislature creating public policy on abortion based on the Christian worldview. Life is sacred under the Christian worldview. As such any laws that allow for the taking of an innocent life, such as a child’s, are illegal and immoral. Therefore “Christians must come to the children’s defense, and Christians must come to the defense of human life as such.” The article reports on the broader effort in other State Legislatures across the country to restrict and ultimately end the practice of
Unlike the government in A Brave New World the United States government does not require anybody to take birth control pills or have an abortion. However, it is still offered to a variety of females. “Pro Life Actions” lets us know that 75.4% of females between the ages fifteen and twenty-nine get abortions once finding out that they are pregnant. This percentage would be higher if it wasn’t for the certain restrictions abortions had. Based on “Religious Tolerance’s” website, a female cannot have an abortion after her first trimester. If she does get an abortion after the first trimester, it is considered to be killing an actual human being. Although abortion clinics are available for all females, most of the females do not know who actually funds these clinics.
Every year, as many as a million lives are aborted; lives that could potentially have been your neighbor, your friend, or even your son or daughter. Abortion is the surgical process of killing a baby by various means; and has been in effect since the Supreme Court ruling on Roe V. Wade in 1973 which legalized it nationwide. It was, at first, endorsed as being a woman’s right, but has more recently been viewed by most as the murder of an innocent child. Besides this shift in views, abortion has caused diverse effects on our culture and nation, as well as the death of upwards of 56 million children according to Life News. Our society has been deeply impacted by the effects of abortion and the loss of millions of innocent lives, and Christian
Planned parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette, Inc. (PPCW) sued the American Coalition of Life Activists (ACLA) for threats under FACE. PPCW said they were targeted with threats by ACLA for performing reproductive services (abortions). ACLA published guilty/wanted posters, which PPCW took as a threat of violence when a couple of physicians were murdered after their personal information was published on these posters. Also, ACLA had Nuremberg files, which listed all the physicians who were performing reproductive services. In these files, the names of physicians who were injured or murdered were crossed out and PPCW took these files as a threat in the form of a “hit list”.
"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).
After reading this week’s assigned readings and documentary, I could not help but to disagree with just about everything Paul Hill wrote in his article, along with what the members of the Army of God said in the documentary. The justification given by Paul Hill and other individuals associated with the Army of God is essentially that they are protecting the unborn (Hill, 2003; Soldiers in the Army of God, 2000). In his own article, Hill states, “The most powerful weapon for overcoming the world's apathetic response to legal abortion is to advocate the means necessary for resisting this atrocity (as required by God's law).” While I understand, but do not agree with the logic of this justification, I do not understand nor agree with their violent methods of protecting the unborn. Is violence effective in protecting the unborn? It does not seem plausible that injuring or killing an abortion provider and bombing or setting on fire an abortion clinic will directly drive overall abortion rates down. I believe that while rates of abortion will decline in an area threatened by violence, the rate of abortion will most likely go up in the areas that surround
acknowledgment that all people are created in the image of God, and therefore have unique and intrinsic value. They further state that human life is sacred, and that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. The Salvation Army also accepts that life beings at the moment of fertilization. So far, so good. Later, in same section, there are shocking contradictions. The Salvation Army notes that termination can occur when “carrying the pregnancy further seriously threatens the life of the mother” or diagnostic procedures identify a fetal abnormality causing only a “very brief post-natal period”. Further, rape and incest also represent special case[s] for the consideration of termination; these exceptions portray a troubling contradiction
The supreme court decision Roe V. Wade that legalized abortion in the United States was decided in 1973. Over 40 years later, abortion is still one of the most controversial issues in our society. What is it about a woman’s right to choose that is so polarizing for so many Americans? And what keeps this social issue at the forefront decade after decade? Religion. Religious beliefs and practices influence views on abortion. Individuals with higher levels of commitment to religious groups tend to oppose abortion at higher rates than those with lower levels of commitment (Liu, 2009). According to Pew Research, 54% of White evangelical protestants believe that abortion should be outright illegal. Amid those who believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases sixty-one percent attend church weekly, fifty-six percent say religion is very important and fifty-four percent have a certain belief in a personal God (Liu, 2013). With such statistics it is easy to see how influential the role of religion plays in those who believe abortion should be illegal. These statistics can be stretched even further to show that it is through group interactions, particularly in religious interactions, that women learn group beliefs. As a result, these beliefs impede a woman’s ability to choose. The choice to have an abortion is a constitutional right that every woman should be allowed to make at her own will. It should be her own merits and decision making that brings her
