The Bathroom Is Among The Most Neglected Rooms Essay

I am here today to convince you that the outrageously rude, belligerent, and hazardous road hogs also known as ‘cyclists in central London’ should be put into Room 101. Cyclists are impertinent, self centred people who feel that whatever they do is correct. They ride around on their annoying two wheeled children’s toys, which have no protection, and they render themselves invisible by refusing to wear reflective clothing.

On Saturday November 4th, I visited Maine South High School to observe the athletic training room facility. I had emailed the Head Athletic Trainer, Jerry Bornhoff prior to my attendance to make sure I was allowed to shadow him for the day. A Maine South football game was scheduled for the afternoon, and the facility was packed with football players. Throughout the time I was there, I made sure I noted the whole process of an athlete from when they first arrived and when they left the training room facility.

Here in Canada, this issue has been brought forward in both communities and provincial level of concerns. To take a look closer to home, the city of Toronto had witnessed the complexity of this issue in the past years. A Toronto transgender teen who identifies as a male, was banned from using his high school boys restroom, and was forced to leave school grounds and search for a public bathroom at a gas station. Concerns were mentioned for the safety of Spencer, and also how he felt uncomfortable being forced to use the women’s restroom; however, several parents and students agreed with how the school was taking action to this problem. After a petition was enacted by fellow supportive students, Spencer was allowed to freely use the restrooms at his high school.

In this week reading, “Calling All Restroom Revolutionaries”, by Simone Chess, Alison Kafer, Jessi Quizar, and Mattie Udora Richardson they expressed three main points throughout the article. The first main point in this article is that “ bathrooms are easier to access for some of us than for others.” This is an issue that some people don’t know about or don’t even think is a problem. Recently this has been a hotbed topic, within the media but I have been aware of this problem for sometime now. Many of my close friends have expressed their concerns about the bathroom situation well before this became a newsworthy topic. With an ever-changing culture and a strong force against certain changes, certain ethnic and social groups appear to be neglected by the lawmakers of America. One of the more recent occurrences of this has been the LBGT community. Up until 2014, marriage was not even legal between a same-sex couple. After gay marriage was ruled legal, a landslide of other reforms were brought to attention. One of the more controversial topics being discussed today is the rights of the LBGT community in accordance to public bathrooms. They argue that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. The definition of gender and the rights that accompany them is constantly being updated and adjusted. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are sparking outrage and debate on whether this argument should be implemented into society. This issue has dominated the media and has caused chaos on both sides of the spectrum. Members of the LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please.

The place where I feel the most comfortable, and show my personality, is my bedroom. This is the place where I can really be myself and do what I want; it’s the place I come home to, and wake up every day. My room makes me feel comfortable because it is my own space.
