A college education is one of the most important things in life. It determines whether you will be able to follow your dreams and have a job that you are passionate about. Although some people may think that it will lead to more bad than good and that it will cost the United States a lot of money, college should be free because it is the only fair way that everyone would be able to have the same opportunity to get a good education and it will benefit, not only the students, but the nation as a whole.

Many respectable and important jobs are available that do not require a college degree such as a dental hygienist or a web developer. Trade jobs, such as mechanics, do not require college degrees, yet are necessary for society. By making the decision to go straight into a career, individuals have the ability to learn as much as they can about their line of work instead of being stuck in irrelevant calculus classes for example. Some of the most well-known and successful billionaires in today’s society did not attend college, including Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerburg, and Bill Gates. By moving immediately into a job after high school, one is able to gain the necessary skills required for the career, and improve upon those skills

There are endless job opportunities for individuals with all varieties of experience and education levels. Jobs that require a college education are generally different than jobs that require a trade or skill. A study conducted by the Georgetown Center on Education and Workforce expressed that “during the next decade, the overwhelming majority of jobs will require some college training and that a high school diploma alone will be a ticket to a life of poverty” (Wallace). Receiving a college education opens up the doors to more opportunities for a person in their future and to allow them to earn enough money to obtain a desired lifestyle. In general, a college education will lead to a higher pay with less manual labor and danger than an individual that attended a trade school.

In addition, the employment rate for a college graduate is much lower than others with only a high school education. Today, those who have a college degree, are more inclined to gain a position in a promising occupation. According to Beth Braverman, “Americans age 25 to 34 with a four-year college degree have a startlingly low unemployment rate of just 2.1 percent, compared to 7 percent for those without a degree. (The overall unemployment rate is now 4.7 percent.)” (Braverman para. 2). These percentages, support the claim that college is essential for a prosperous career. In order to succeed in an occupation, getting a job is the first priority. Therefore, with a four- year college education your chances of receiving a job is higher than others without one.

You don’t need to have a college degree to succeed. Take Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, for example, or Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, or Bill Gates, Microsoft founder. None of them graduated college, yet they are some of the most successful business leaders/entrepreneurs of our time. “According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 30 projected fastest growing jobs between 2010 and 2020, five do not require a high school diploma” (procon.org).

It has been discovered that college graduates have a much larger chance of moving up in the job force (“The Rising Cost of Not Going to College”). This will result in more money and opportunities. Research shows that there are less full time jobs with high school diploma (“Chapter 1: Education and Economic Outcomes Among the Young.”). Computers are replacing people in the 21st generation, and a decent education is needed for jobs. Also, careers that require a college education are more likely to provide benefits such as job flexibility, insurance benefits, and retirement funds (Leaf Group). If someone wants to enjoy retirement and not work for the rest of their lives, then they need money and benefits. Having a more stable job can help provide this protection. There are many benefits for students choosing college as their first step in your future after high school. Earning a college degree is an important step, both personally and professionally (Hussung, 2015). Having a higher education is valuable to an individual, families, and the community as well. Students who obtain a college education often have higher lifetime earnings and experience a variety of other benefits (“How Important”). People who lack educational degrees will more likely be limited to basic jobs in service, manufacturing, and construction industries (“How Important”). On the other hand, employees with a high school education may secure jobs with good benefits; college graduates typically fare better, entering higher-level careers with greater salaries (“How Important”). College graduates are also more likely to receive promotions, earn raises and develop reasoning and communication skills that can be applied to their jobs (“How Important”). Obtaining a college education leads to a better quality of life overall.

In addition to a better job, college graduates will receive higher-pay, in contrast to those with only high school diplomas. BLS presented that “Workers with a professional degree, such as lawyers and physicians earned about $612 more a week than did workers with a bachelor's degree, and over $1000 more per week than workers who have a high school diploma as their highest level of education”(BLS). A well-paying job is attainable with college. Having a successful and luxurious life is not as achievable with only a high school education because the possibility of having a high-paying profession is low. The higher the education one receives will determine their salary. Another benefit of graduating college is the opportunity to make the world a better place. President Obama stated that “You’ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment”(Obama). In the past, the majority of people never thought that they had to obtain a college degree to become successful. A college education is getting more and more expensive each day, that it might not be worth the money anymore.
