Satisfactory Essays

Marijuana is a widespread drug all over the world. A few countries, such as Netherlands, Australia and some U.S. jurisdictions, have decriminalized the use of marijuana. Marijuana is a gateway drug that leads people to try some more serious drugs. The users who have experienced the comfortable and excited feeling after use of marijuana are usually highly curious about the enjoyment of smoking other stronger drugs. Except the reason of chasing for more excitation, a change in brain’s reward system will seek for other drugs to achieve the high which it used to experience. A study recently shows that evidence of a gateway from marijuana to cocaine has been found and that it is indicated that past use of marijuana increases the probability of current cocaine use by 29% (DeSimone, 1998). It proves that the marijuana users have a higher probability to consume fatal drugs than others who have never used marijuana. Moreover, social environment also needs to be considered. Most students from high school say that it is easier to accept marijuana than alcohol and difficult to resist the invitation from a friend who wants to give them drugs (“Five Reasons marijuana is a gateway drug”, 2017). In a recent study, Hall and Lynskey (2005) showed that “There is a biological gradient or dose-response relationship in that it is young people who are the earliest and most frequent cannabis users who are the most likely to use other illicit drugs” (p. 46). Therefore, decriminalization of cannabis will lead new generations to the stage which they cannot control.
