Cancer is an important health problem that has strongly increased over the past couple of decades. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1,638,910 people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year; that is around 187 people per minute. This disease is ranked as the second most common cause of death in America. With cancer being so common today, there needs to be an effective and relatively fast treatment plan to cure the victims of cancer without causing more harm to them. Extensive research and analysis is critical to determine the best method of treatment. Cancer can be fatal but recent advancement and better understanding of the disease has produced major triumph in overcoming the ailment. Aside from …show more content…
The most effective treatment is chosen from the effectiveness, side effects, quality of life, and tumor shrinkage, based on the guidelines set by Irving’s (2012) study. I compared the best treatments from both methods of medicine and reviewed several experiments that were conducted on cancer patients using the top treatments.
In order to extensively evaluate these guidelines, I started from the development of a treatment plan. Each treatment plan should be tailored to the patient’s specific variables regarding their type of cancer. Lamson (2007) lays out a set of variables that could be used for all forms of cancer. When considering a treatment plan, it is important to also think about the future that precedes the initial treatment.
It is estimated in Michaud’s (2008) study that 30%–50% of patients will relapse and die of their disease if no further treatment is mentioned by their doctors. If a relapse occurs within 5 years of the initial treatment the patient is not considered “cured” or a survivor. The main goal of CAM doctors is to ensure the patient’s quality of life is greatly increased; on the other hand, biomedicine doctors generally focus on prolonging a patient’s life, which is only quantitative. If the quantity of life is prolonged but the patient acquires several side effects and/or relapses, then the patient is only suffering
What are some of the things that come to mind when you think of cancer treatments? Perhaps you envision some sort of chemotherapy treatment, or a bottle of expensive pills used to target specific genetic mutations that may have caused the horrid disease to develop. While these treatments have been proven to save some of cancers victims, research suggests that there is a natural cure that deems promising in curing cancer.

Abstract Cancer “Sucks” and many individuals today are dealing with it or know someone who has dealt with it. The late president Richard Nixon declared war on cancer in 1971 and we have been fighting the battle ever since (McCarthy, 2015, paras. 16). Since the declaration many possible cures were developed and chemotherapy is the one which seems to work on almost every cancer. However, this treatment has drawbacks that are either controversial or questionable as to what degree they help with defeating cancer.
To attain an effect approach to care of cancer there need for a holistic approach on the benefits to the patient. In the year 2010, the number of new cases of cancer was estimated to at 1.52 million cases with close to 570,000 of these people expected to die. This marks a 68% improvement compared to the initial survival rate of five years upon diagnosis. Associated costs in cancer treatment are on the rise. In the United States, costs amount to $263.8 billion where direct medical cost accounts for $102.8 billion and the rest being the lost productivity in the U.S. workforce (Stjernswärd, 2011). Advances in treatment have downgraded the disease from a terminal disease to a chronic one. Drug utilization in the United States increased by 0.7% in the year 2009 and spending grew by 6.1% per person. This is an aspect attributable to new and expensive therapies offered to patients (Edge S.B. et al., 2010).
Also, from an economic aspect, between the cost of the actual treatment and research, to the loss of productivity, cancer is a huge expense to the economy. Therefore, it is beneficial to know which is more effective so that we can better allocate our resources. This will reduce the strain that is put on the economy.
“The treatment of cancer involves many different areas,” Dr. Labow said. “It is not just surgery, it’s not just chemotherapy, and it’s not just radiation. It is involving genetics, it is involving nutritionists, it is involving all of these
Each day, hundreds of people find themselves face to face with the word “cancer.” There is an estimate of 4600 new cancer diagnosis each day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the united states, and is a major health concern worldwide. However, over the past 3 decades the survival rate for all cancers has climbed over 20%.
These days the treatment of cancer has taken all encompassing ways. The doctors can opt for removing the tumors surgically, injecting the chemicals to destroy the cancer cells or utilize the radiation therapy. Various experiments are carried out clinically to aim the cancer cells in a better manner. Though, there are people who promote a different path of treating the cancer, the natural way.
This review will provide a brief investigation of current cancer therapies and the lack of effectiveness that these treatments provide while treating the disease. The aim of this review is to discuss the urgent need to develop new and effective cancer therapy options that can bridge the gap between the various types of cancer and effective cancer targeting.
The general public does not have a complete understanding of how cancer research is conducted. When a person gets diagnosed with cancer he believe that his doctor has the medicine and all the necessary tools to solve and cure their cancer immediately. As result of this, this misunderstanding is what can cause a huge rift and misinterpretation of what cancer therapies and medicines are actually used for. The medications used to treat cancer are predominately experimental, meaning for some cancer patients the formation of more cancer cells may become dormant or suppressed, but for others the medicine available may in fact do the complete opposite. Because cancer is such a complex and unique illness and everyone’s body is different, this alone puts a displacement on how the effect of what medications can be used to treat certain patients. Since there are multiple levels of cancer, the general public has to understand that currently, today, there is not one drug produced that will completely eliminate cancer cells and their effects. Nevertheless, this does not mean researches and experimentalist and not taking the necessary steps to getting closer to providing the aid need for this disease. The steps researches and experimentalist usually take when trying to understand cancers typically are made to help prevent, diagnosis, treat, and cure the on-set of this disease. The specific steps are to first do basic research to identify the cause(s) and
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death today. There are a variety of different treatments for cancer such as surgical removal, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation. Chemotherapy is the most common approach it kills the cancer cells by drug toxicity or preventing cell division (Jabir et al., 2012). The issue with Chemotherapy is that it is rarely successful. The radiation approach kills cancerous cells, but it also damages the surrounding healthy cells. However, newer techniques are being developed to just attack the cancerous cells. There is a need to find a cancer treatment approach that does not kill the healthy cells along with the cancerous cells. The answer to solving this challenge lies in the successful application of
As discussed, radiotherapy and chemotherapeutic agents both can negatively affect the body by causing damage to healthy cells, not just those of the cancer. This issue has led to the development of a new type of treatment, one that solely seeks out the cancer cells, kills them, and leaves the bodily cells intact for the most part. According to the National Cancer Institute, there are many different types of treatments that target the

Cancer is known to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Each year, this disease is responsible for taking the lives of millions of people. In recent years, our knowledge of cancer has grown immensely. We have discovered ways to lower our chances of developing cancer and even treatments for those who already have the disease. Treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy are used on patients to shrink or kills cancer cells. Sometimes these treatments work and patients enter remission and eventually become cancer free, but this doesn’t always happen. Depending on the location and type of cancer that they are
