The creation of earth has been a taboo topic in the school setting for generations. Public schools can only teach students about the “Big Bang Theory.” A Christian student will only learn about six-day creation in a school setting at either a Christian or Catholic school. Another way a Christian student could learn about creation is during Sunday school or Catechism. The essay will provide insight pertaining to the nebular hypothesis and the six-day creation. In today’s society it has become common among Christians to not believe in the six-day creation and to focus more on the Big Bang Theory as the creation of the universe. “Many who remain orthodox and evangelical in every other way, feel that to maintain a scholarly standing in academia, they must adopt the Big Bang, old universe, old Earth, and hundreds of millions of years of life’s history before man” (Morris, 2017). As Christians it is important that we always look at the relationship that we see in the Bible and all other knowledge (Graham, 2009). In the early 1800’s James Hutton and Charles Lyell proposed the Old-Earth theory. Due to this theory, many theologians believed the old-Earth theory had been proven by scientists and incorporated the theory into Scripture. The hope of the adaptation was to continue to have credibility with secular scientists. With this hope many will see that historically the Bible has been seen as a conflicting with our academic knowledge such as science.
The first Biblical
Christians today have a biblical principle and opinion of the universe existence. Christians believe that God created earth and that he accomplished that in only six days. Genesis 1 explains the creation and the interpretation is so utterly clear and one writer states “Thus, any interpretation that goes beyond a clear plain meaning of the text is considered to compromise Biblical authority and capitulate to evolutionary theories”. One look at the Young Earth View is said to be formed from the Modern English
In this paper, I will discuss how three influential scholars in this order: Augustine, Aquinas, Galileo, delimit science or the bible and the ways their beliefs overlapped or didn’t.
The Old Testament of the Holy Bible gives many examples which provide modern man with guidelines for the use of scientific method. Millam (2008) explains that there is an underlying order in nature demonstrated by the patterns and regularities of God’s creations. These regularities can be seen in the forces of nature and are stable throughout space and time (Millam, 2008). The original classification of species, use of precise measurement, and even the first account of scientific research, are all included in the Old Testament of the Holy Scriptures. God gives scientists some clear frames of reference for seeking knowledge and truth in science.
After conducting an hour-long observation and data collection of The Big Bang Theory, I found three specific patterns. These were patterns of traditional gender roles, heterosexual privilege, and gender performance. The first pattern is the traditional breadwinner and housewife roles that are portrayed throughout the episodes. In the show women are seen occupying the household while the men occupy the workplace. These traditional roles reinforce gendered behaviors and interactions amongst the male and female character that reflect modern day society.
Since then, the origin of the universe became a very big question to everyone. The curiosity we possess help us seek answers from different questions we can think of. Different hypotheses and ideas were formed with great scientific evidence to prove that the universe began as a single primordial atom. The scientists even found out that the universe is expanding because of the great amount of dark matter present in it. However, with these ideas, the religious thinking of people could not be removed. The concept of God being the Creator of all the things that existed contradicts the views of the theories formed. The stories and verses contained in the bible are different from the results of studies connected to it. Here, I investigate the things
“Rocks of Ages” is Stephen Jay Gould’s commentary on the conflict between secular scientists and religious believers who reject scientific theory when in it is disagreement with religious teachings about nature and origin of the natural world. Certain aspects of his argument hold true, but the application is impossible and still gives one magisteria a dominance over the other. While it is an accurate account of historical disagreements and critical views of well-known people, his argument is flawed by human nature. He repeatedly contradicts himself and maintains a bias in favor of scientific theory.
Too much of the Christian worldview’s attention is focused on reconciling the Bible with science and archaeological discoveries when it should be focused on redemption. The theme of the Bible could be summarized into four categories Creation,
According to Galileo, nature is “immutable”, unchanging over time, and she “cares not a whit whether her abstruse reasons and methods are understandable to men”. Alternatively, the Bible, in order to “accommodate the understanding of everyman” is subject to interpretation “so as the bare meaning of the words is concerned”. Puzzling as both can be, new discoveries in nature may refute the theories of the Bible. It is dangerous to apply Bible scriptures to science because that would then limit the meanings of the scriptures. The Bible is based on limited and often theoretical conjecture and using passages taken from it to which are, perhaps not understood properly, are inappropriate and “ill-suited to their purposes”, as it is possible for the “Bible [to]…speak untruth”. Irrefutable evidence of the Sun and Earth’s movements was not available when the Bible was originally composed. Galileo thought it was self-serving of those in the church to condemn his findings, by “showing a great fondness for their own
There are many topics that science and religion have opposing views on and continue to debate. One of these subjects that has received a great deal of attention and has placed an enormous wedge between the two realms is the varying opinions concerning the creation of the universe. For nearly a century, scientists have explained this phenomenon with the Big Bang theory, whereas spiritual thinkers have long placed their faith in the Genesis creation account. Both submit valid arguments, however, it is ultimately up to each individual to decide which testimony to accept as truth and to consider if it is possible that both opinions could co-exist.
There have been many theories concerning what the universe looks like, how it became this way, and where it is going. The most popular theory that people hold today is that the universe began when all the matter ever present in the universe was contained in a tiny speck and that spec exploded. This is known as the Big Bang. This theory has developed a great deal since it was first conceptualized and continues to evolve today. Many different scientists have had a hand in this.
The beginning of the 17th century was characterized as the “Scientific Revolution”, which initiated the foundation of conflicts between religion and scientific consideration (Moss, 1983). This era had major phases of transformation within this early modern period; religion, philosophy, and science equally influenced each other. During this time, the Bible was viewed as the “standard” etiquette regarding natural occurrences.
Due to the "highly subjective nature of most scientific theorizing... [we should] let the Bible speak for itself and modify our scientific view of origins accordingly." (as cited in Downey, D., & Porter, S., 2009).
How does current science support each of the Biblical views of Young Earth Scientists(YEC), and Old Earth Scientists(OEC)? This is a question that is disputed among many scientists. Although both groups believe that the Bible is the word of God, they both interpret it differently. For example Young Earth Creationists believe that the earth was literally created in one week. Old Earth Creationists believe, however, that days did not refer to 24 hours, but referred to longer periods of time. It is important for people to understand the differences and similarities between the beliefs of Young Earth Creationists and Old Earth Creationists, so that they can determine which view is supported by science.
Astronomers believed the Universe was created about 14 billion years ago. During that time, the entire Universe was inside a bubble that was thousands of times smaller than a pinhead, and it was insanely hot and dense. Out of nowhere this little bubble started expanding. This expansion created what we know as the Universe. In such little time the Universe went from the size of an atom to the ginormous galaxy we have that is continuously growing.
The “young earth creationist” perceptive is the result of a historical-grammatical reading of the description of the early Earth in the Bible or the Islamic Qur’an, which both contain similar accounts of a six-day creation, Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, and Noah’s flood (Biblical
