The book that I have selected to examine for this essay is called: George Washington’s Leadership Lessons. The authors are James C. Rees and Stephen Spignesi and this book was published in 2007. This book is an excellent read for anyone that is trying to enjoy an enlightening guide to the leadership wisdom of America’s first pronounced leader. This entire book is related to leadership as it uses true stories of George Washington’s life to recount his leadership attributes and experiences. The book does an exceptional job at talking about leadership traits and how Washington exemplified these traits throughout his life. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.” George Washington exemplified servant leadership in multiple circumstances. Perhaps the one most notable was when he was speaking at a small meeting house in Newburg, New York on March of 1783. Many of Washington’s Officers were fed up and disgusted. Against all odds, they had won the war, however Congress had failed to pay their salaries or pensions. One of Washington’s aids recalls that Washington was not making much headway with the audience at first. After some time, Washington slowly pulled out a letter from his breast pocket and gently grabbed his spectacles (glasses). As he slowly put on his spectacles, he stated, “I have not only turned grey, but also gone almost blind in the service of this new nation.” It was noted by many accounts that this was Washington at his best as he motivated the audience and caused many of them to draw tears. If this technique wasn’t creative thinking by a servant leader to motivate his audience after everything else was failing, then I don’t know what is. One of the most interesting insights covered in this book was on leadership theory. George Washington exemplified the “Great Man Theory”.
