The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the country’s five major symphony orchestras, and constantly has new pieces for music lovers. The February 2014 concert opened with Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun by Claude Debussy,it's a very youthful piece that depicts the young in a gentle and carefree nature. Impressionism was a leading art movement during his time.In France, “Impressionist” was a term used to say a persons work did not follow the norms or rules of society.
Claude was a leading composer of impressionist music and respected among his peers. One of the earliest art movements of the 20th century was Impressionism. The whole-tone scale can often be seen in his pieces and form the basis of his music .For example, The opening flute solo has a whole tone descent below the original pitch. Debussy pieces were majorly influenced by poetry and one of my favorite pieces was influence by a personal friend

The faun was a mythical creature who awakes in a forest. He can't remember what lead him into the forest. It crosses his mind that a beautiful maiden visited him.In the end he falls into a deep sleep and that's when the flutes start to play. The flute represent the Faun , and at the beginning it accelerates before fluctuating back down to the original pitch. The harps are joined by the French horns for more of a ethereal effect. The music proceeds without abrupt shifts; themes blend into each other, slowly rising and falling. The middle section features clarinet and oboe solos before the flute gradually retakes the lead. In the final moments, light touches of percussion from finger cymbals are heard.During the piece Debussy rarely uses brass and percussion ,he instead uses Crotales when necessary. Four horns are used the English horn is used in the wind section as well as strings .His choice of
‘Impressionism’ was a derogatory term first used to mock Claude Monet’s painting Impression, Sunrise, and other later paintings that were patterned after his revolutionary style. At a time when artists took great pains to make their artwork look as life-like as possible, the quick brushstrokes and blurry figures in Monet’s paintings looked anything but realistic to the art critics. Because of its focus on mental images, Impressionism later came to include not only visual arts, but also certain music as well. Debussy and Ravel are two of the most famous Impressionist composers, and our textbook states that what sets their style apart is that “instead of dealing with human emotions, [their] music evoked the atmosphere of nature” (p. 704). This type of
Following the few words was the Cello Concerto of Sir Edward Edgar. Structured with four movements rather then three opens with slow and poignant music. It reminded me of the music that you hear when someone is mourning from loosing someone. It had its ups and downs in-between and the third was like energy broken down with mourning while going into the forth was the longest and most overly dramatic, it brought the audience to its feet. The performance was soothing and relaxing and amazing to see that each one of those people on that grand stage added something to make the piece special. With that being one of the first symphony performances I
While listening to the video by Doc Severinsen and the Last Cruces Symphony Orchestra, I came to a conclusion that it does not take just one person to make a great performance, but an entire orchestra. The Cruces Symphony Orchestra and Doc Severinsen, in the video, performed magnificently together without any issues internally and externally. Comments were made by other listeners, which most comments were positive with some negative references to the erroneous grammar usage by the publisher of the video from the YouTube website. In another note, the title of the video, as previously mentioned, is Doc Severinsen with the Last Cruces Symphony Orchestra played on August 25, 2007. In addition,
The Grinnell Symphony Orchestra’s concert with cowboy singer Dave Stamey was billed as an intriguing and thought-provoking junction between the genres of classical and Western. The mix of traditional cowboy music and orchestral arrangement had the potential to highlight the strengths of the performers and genres; it was certainly interesting to hear songs typically performed solo being played with a full orchestra, but a number of red flags popped out immediately and ended up spoiling the experience. Poor planning and a failure to be conscious of cultural politics ultimately left a bad taste in my mouth. Factors unrelated to this intersection of genres – rehearsal timing, audience demographics, and Dave Stamey’s racist habits and mannerisms – ended up highlighting the negative instead.
Since this is a new direction with no prior sales history, the director of the
On April 14, 2016 I attended the Dvorak Cello Concerto at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee. The instruments that were being played were made up of the whole symphony orchestra. In addition, the instrument that was featured was the cello. The reasoning for this is because there was a special guest musician, Susie Yang who was performing with the orchestra and she played the cello. The structure of the performance consisted of three different main pieces of music with different sections within them. In addition, this was the first time I had been to the Tennessee Theatre. The theatre was very intriguing because of the elegance that came with it. The décor was very nice and looked expensive. It is exactly what I imagined when I thought of the setting for a symphony. It was well lit with beautiful crown molding in the celling. In addition, there were lovely curtains blocking an area that looked to be a balcony beside the stage. In addition, there was back drop lights on the walls highlighting pieces that looked to be Grecian Urns.

This is the website for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. This orchestra was established in 1885, and was designed as a summer job for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, so as to provide year-round employment forthe musicians, who would otherwise be searching for work during the summer months. It was also created as a new series of summer venues. It was designed to resemble summer evening Viennese concerts. They were originally named “Promenade Concerts.” Later, people started calling them “popular concerts.” That name was shortened to “pops,” and that name stuck and was officially adopted in 1900. In 1901, a new hall was created for the Pops. Symphony Hall has amazing acoustics and is designed in a way that the rows may be removed
When Jaap van Zweden announced he will leave the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2018, the question that comes to mind is: who will succeed him? Although young, James Gaffigan proves tonight that he possesses the stylistic expertise to replace van Zweden’s. This performance by the Dallas Symphony of El Salón México, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Symphony No. 5, held at the stunning Meyerson Center, showcases the astonishing capabilities of conductor James Gaffigan and solidifies his claim to van Zweden’s post.
Achille-Claude Debussy or Claude Debussy was a French 20th century composer known for his prominent role in impressionistic music. Debussy never described his pieces as impressionism as he disliked the term when it was associated with his music. Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, he and his family left for Paris in 1867 only to move to Cannes in 1870 to escape the Franco-Prussion war. Claude Debussy learnt to play piano from an Italian violinist by the name Jean Cerutti and later studied under a woman, by the name of Marie Mauté de Fleurville, who claimed to have been a pupil of Frédéric Chopin. In 1872 he was enrolled in the Paris Conservatoire and remained there to develop musically over the next 11 years. Debussy was infamous for his experimental nature breaking
Impressionism is a new kind of painting that captures a fleeting moment in time. Whether it be moving people doing daily activities or water shimmering on the lake. During the 1800s, impressionism was a drastic break in the history of art. It is also described as a revolution because it broke away from the average paintings that consisted of history and mythology. The artists could paint what they saw through their own eyes and could use their own techniques. The history of art went from classical paintings to modern, weird paintings. All of the artists had the idea that it was time for them to paint what they saw through their own eyes.
Felix Mendelssohn was one of the most famous composers during the 19th century. Although in his music he did show some features of romanticism, he was strongly influenced by traditional genres such as counterpoint etc. In this essay, the biography of the composer, background of the genre and analysis of the piece will be investigated
In 1903 Debussy wrote, “Music is a mysterious form of mathematics whose elements are derived from the infinite. Music is the expression of the movement of the waters, the play of curves described by changing breezes. There is nothing more musical than a sunset.” (Vallas 8) Debussy felt a strong connection with the arts and nature. According to the Oxford Music Online article on Claude Debussy, written by Francois Lesure and Roy Howat, Debussy once said, “I love pictures almost as much as music”.
Among the many musical types of the period, the classical period is best known for the symphony, a form of a large orchestral ensemble. The symphonic pieces generally had three movements, the sonata, the minuet and the finale. Building of the achievements of earlier composers,
