The article “The Constructed Body” by Colette Guillaumin looks at how all bodies are constructed from influences they receive from society. It is believed that this construction begins from the moment a body enters this world, and continues all throughout that bodies lifetime. Throughout this construction process bodies are ‘sexed,’ which appears to be fully accepted by society. The article points out several differences between men and women being ‘sexed,’ with the women usually facing disadvantages. The article “Contraceptive Chaos” by Helen Smyth talks about contraceptive methods in the middle to late 1900’s, and how women were given lots of misleading information regarding contraceptive methods. Women were also not given many options, and had a difficult time receiving help when it came to getting contraceptives. Both of the articles “The Constructed Body” and “Contraceptive Chaos” place an emphasis on how women were most likely to be at a disadvantage and face more limitations when receiving influences from society. The main argument presented in “The Constructed Body” is that all bodies are ‘sexed’ because of influences they receive from society, and that this process is never finished because society is always influencing bodies throughout their lifetimes. The author supports her argument by presenting direct and indirect interventions that are placed on bodies by society.
