The Career Path Of A Dietitian / Nutritionist

When I first began college I was unsure of what career path I wanted to pursue, but I knew whatever I chose would lead me to a challenging and rewarding career. My first semester I enrolled as a biology major because of my interest in science and desire to work within the health care field. This same semester I also happened to be taking a nutrition class as apart of my general education, and I was introduced to the science of nutrition. As the semester progressed my passion for nutrition grew, while the feelings of uncertainty I had about my future career path began to dissolve. I was drawn to nutrition once I began learning about the effect that food has on our health, and realized I could help people suffering from diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, which are so prevalent today. I knew that choosing to major in dietetics was going to require an immense amount of hard work and dedication, but I decided to accept the challenge and pursue a career in dietetics.

I choose medical billing and coding because there are so many job opportunities you can receive while working in this field. Many years ago I chose my studies to begin a career in the medical field. My original goal was to become a Pediatrician. However, at the end of my bachelor’s degree and after many hours spent volunteering at Miami Children’s Hospital, I decided that I wanted a career that would give me more patient provider interaction. I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. With the variety of majors and interests college offers, the decision of choosing a career holds a heavy weight. There are many paths one can go to have a successful, fulfilling job for the rest of their lives; this is where college can explore a person’s likes and dislikes. From taking taking the self-assessment, it resulted careers that revolve around medical and/or as educators to help others. These choices seemed very very accurate and possible that I want to pursue. I have always been passionate of caring for others in some source. The four careers that I decided to further research are: occupational therapist, social and human service assistant, pharmacist, and veterinarian.

A health career is a career many want to pursue including myself. By being in this class I have learned so much. The interview I had with a Certified Nursing Assistant was beneficial because it cleared up many questions I had. She answered how to got there, how she is working her way up, and even likes and dislikes. A CNA might not do a lot of the things Nurses do but it is a great way to start. This way you can work and continue to expand your education in the health field.

With such a large number of choices, the decision of a career major can appear overwhelming. Do you follow example of your parents? Do you take after the way your friends are taking? Before FNU 206 Introduction to Nutrition and Dietetics, I only had an idea of what I wanted to do as a Registered Dietitian, but not exactly how to reach that goal. After taking this class, Dr. Adkins has given me direction as to how to find my first destination. The Registered Dietitian career is not like being a doctor; there is no specific practice to study in school and stay as that type of specially trained practice. There are certain practices and patients to attend to as a Registered Dietitian, however my first job can be in a clinical setting with cancer patients as supposed to a company focused on wellness of the body. Being in the medical field is something my family has been in for a few generations now. My grandmother once worked in a nursing home, and my aunts were both nursing assistants. My mother has been in the medical field since she was sixteen, starting in a nursing home, and then becoming a nursing assistant until 2007. Shortly afterwards, she became a medical assistant that she currently still is today. It can only but inspire me to be working in the medical field next. I wanted to be a neurologist first, then a psychologist, but with the amount of schooling and how much debt I’d be in, I thought it through and figured out I want to be a nurse practitioner. They have similar duties to a registered nurse except they give advanced services to patients, and it can be cheaper going to medical school as well as having to go for a shorter amount of time than a regular doctor as well as great benefits and salary.

Already coming from a family with a background in the health professions field, I pretty much had a view of what it would be like in the medical field. Going back to my senior year, I had alot of medical experiences that I enjoyed. I enrolled in a special medical program, Aurora LIGHTS, in my highschool in which I shadowed many physicians, physician assistants, dental assistants, midwives and so on. It was challenging and overwhelming at the same time. I got to help people everyday.

Working within health and social care it might be different from another career path. You have to be committed to people, have good communication and listening skills, and be willing to make a real difference to people’s lives. If you feel that you are fulfilling your ambitions from knowing that your job is helping people by contributing to their health, happiness and wellbeing, you are in the right place. Before choosing a specific career, it is important to know that within this sector, there are always entry routes for people of all ages and all levels of experience, which means that no matter what your background is, you constantly have an opportunity.

My journey to become a registered dietitian has been longer and maybe more complex than the average college students. As a first-generation college student I was faced with many challenges that to this day have shaped me in a unique way as a dietitian. During this year of my internship, I want to be able to reflect on my own growth, strengths and weaknesses and be open to feedback to improve as a dietitian.

Finding a specific career path can not only be difficult, but it can also induce bouts of anxiety, anger, and sadness over a crucial part of an individual’s life. Settling on a career can be unnerving when thinking about the fact that this is the career that you spend thousands of dollars on in college, that this is the career you will work in until you retire. With this course, I’ve found that it has been easier to narrow down a goal towards finding a career. Through career assessments, different assignments and discussions, I have realized what my barriers and strengths are. Overcoming these and improving these skills or applying them to an actual career assisted me in narrowing my goal as well. I am now able to clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of my career goal and to think clearer about the next steps that I will take after this course.
