The Vietnam War was a result of pitting the communist North Vietnam government against South Vietnam. The United States was South Vietnam’s greatest ally and the war lasted from November 1, 1955, until April 30th, 1975. Vietnam is located on the far right side of Southeast Asia, next to the Indochinese peninsula. It had been under French rule since the 19th century. In the midst of World War II, Japanese forces invaded Vietnam. Vietnam’s political leader, Ho Chi Minh, had to try and fight off both the Japanese invaders and French colonial administration at the same time. In order to defend his country, he created the Viet Minh, which was the League of the Independence of Vietnam. This was inspired by Chinese and Soviet Communism.
In 1945, Vietnam was defeated in World War II and following this loss, Japan decided to remove their forces from Vietnam. This left Emperor Bao Dai in charge. He was a French-educated man. The Vietnamese people saw an opportunity to regain control of their country and infiltrated and seized control over the northern city of Hanoi. They declared the land as their own and called it the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh was named as its president. France began to panic because Vietnam was actually fighting for their land, and as a result, decided to back up Emperor Bao Dai and create the state of Vietnam. This was done in July of 1949 and they declared the city of Saigon as their capital.
