“No treatment plan is the same for every person and every recovery is different as well for everyone.” The changing lives is a transformational documentary about the lives of a few people on how they got out of addiction. It shows the process through their very compelling group therapy. But most importantly, what really caught me was the program for the women, that helped them with treatment when they were at the verge of losing their children.

The group therapy was very compelling to me. I really saw that they were helping one another to get to the root of each other’s problems, digging deep and peeling at the source. Some were very uncomfortable at first but once they saw that they had a lot of similarities with others, they slowly started opening up. The therapist was also going deep, but it was for a cause. It was to help them heal and move on with their lives.

These women were mostly from abusive homes, or addicts, because of these circumstances. The program helps these women through treatment and helps their children too by keeping them in a safe area like daycare while their mothers are in treatment, getting better. This program have been an inspiration for the many ladies that have walked in it, changing so many lives around. The part of their change that struck me the most was the day they graduate. This day signifies a milestone in their lives of how far they've come in their journey and how successful they been in it. It's the sign that shows that they have finally made to the finish line and are to keep it
Some people who get into drug addiction are either greatly affected by the past or who greatly worry about the future. However, in the addiction recovery process, you or your loved ones with addiction will help you or them understand the value of the “now”. With the line-up of activities and therapies, you would easily get the grasp of the “now”.
At the beginning of my training, I was hesitant to work with people struggling with addiction. However, at this point, I am excited to begin working with this population. The raw honesty presented in the group setting along with the anger at the possibility of losing a safe place created a dynamic I wanted to further explore. Research supports that individuals attending group therapy in a 12 step program format succeed if they have the proper support and motivation (Cite). The group dynamic demonstrated that recovery takes time and self-discovery, similar to other situations dealt with in therapy. Subsequently, by using my sense of self and humor with clients struggling with addiction, I can help them in their journey. Furthermore, the client needs to identify accountability at their own pace in the process and not when others dictate. This knowledge and the personalization of addiction will aid me in the future support of my
In the movie A Better Life, the Main Character Carlos Galindo is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who started working as a day labor worker when he first arrived in the country, however he has had steady work from Blasco Martinez who owns a gardening business which he tries to convince Carlos to buy from him as he says he is moving. The idea of being self employed is very appealing to Carlos but he knows he can never afford to do so and the risk of getting caught and deported is very high. Carlos has a son Luis who is reluctant to go to school on a daily basis and gets into trouble as he is influenced by his friends who are part of the
The program is conducted around shared experiences, strength and hope, through individuals who are recovering from their addictions.
The film Life is beautiful was directed by Roberto Benigni in 1997. The film tells the story of a man by the name of Guido who falls in love with a woman named Dora. He is later taken to a concentration camp with his family. Guido turns the experience of the concentration camp into a game in order to hide the harsh reality of the war and many killings from his young son, Giosue .
“The Happy Movie” is a very persuasive documentary that's full of storytelling and pathos. It seems like the director, Roko Belic, took Jay Heinrichs book and dulled down the intensity of his argument strategies. Happy uses over twenty of Jay’s argument tools all throughout the movie. The movie just goes into your heart and pulls on your heartstrings. This movie proves its point through stories from people with no money, people who has had loads of money, people who have suffered many tragedies, and different doctors in the field of the brain and happiness. He also uses multiple rhetorical strategies that are presented in “Thank You For Arguing” to prove his point that happiness is the best thing for everyone.
The first time I personally experienced attending a group therapy was part of my course. Through this experience i can say that group therapy can be very powerful in healing a person emotionally and since the members were from the same class, where we all have similar goals. Group therapy helped all of us to establish meaningful and intimate relationship and we also recognised commanality of members needs and problems and to develop a sense of bonding and we became very close and we could also be there for each other during emotionally trying times. It also helped me to increase self-growth, self acceptance and self –confidence among oneself and group members. Group therapy is a powerful venue for growth and change. It also helped me in expressing my emotions in a healthy way.
Getting help for drug addiction is often such an intimidating idea that many addicts continue to use rather than expose themselves to the embarrassment or pain that they have associated with reaching out to someone for help. This is in large part due to the fact that television, books and movies have portrayed drug rehab centers in such a negative light that the reality is actually quite incomprehensibly different than these depictions. Millions of people have gotten help for addiction and gone on to lead productive and fulfilling lives free from the bonds of substance abuse. However, there are plenty still who delayed treatment for one reason or another and suffered severe consequences by doing so. Because addiction is a progressive and
This experience has changed the way I see those who haven’t had enough and those who haven’t found away out of the addicted world. I’ve learned there is more to a person than their appearance and in these cases there is a lot of hurt and anger in their souls. Even after recovery some people still carry around guilt and anger. Some are ashamed because they let something affect them in a way in which they lost control. Others are angry at
So how does an addicted individual escape addiction? Miller (1998) argues that there can be a sudden shift in how the person perceives the pros and cons of their behavior. This is often seen over time as the suffering directly attached to the addiction increases and the ratio of pros and cons shifts. Through motivational interviewing, Miller suggests that therapists and other helping professionals can lend clients another perspective, a mirror image of themselves, so as to increase the client's conception of the consequences and saliency of their
These modern or alternative treatment techniques include options like recreational therapy, yoga, music and art therapy and dual diagnosis treatment. These treatment modalities are used to help patients regain the life skills and coping capabilities that may have been displaced while caught up in the cycle of addiction. This facility also focuses on family involvement in the treatment process through a formal family participation program. All of these options are available to experienced addiction counselors who are charged with developing tailored treatment programs for patients.
The last five weeks of my clinical rotation I was able to spend my time at the Marjorie R. Oakley Home for women. This is one of two recovery homes that is administered by The Recovery Group of Southern West Virginia, the other home ran by this organization is the New Beginnings Home for Men. While I spent much of my time with the ladies that stay at the women’s home I was also able to meet a few of the males that was staying at the men home. The recovery home was a type of “group” home created to help provide opportunities for both adult men and women trying to free themselves from the nasty cycle of addiction. The main goal of the homes is to help these individuals to get clean, and avoid relapsing due to addictive environments. The
A film directed by Roberto Benigni, Life is Beautiful was released on the 26th of December, 1998. The film follows the life of Guido Orefice, who must shield his son Joshua from the horrors of life in a concentration camp.
Group counseling not only allows for members to learn from their therapist, it also allows for them to learn from personal experiences of other members and to gain insights and ideas on the issues they are confronting. Group counseling also helps in improving social skills among the members as they are able to interact freely in and out of the group. This way members can be more confident and open to interactions during the sessions. Group therapy influences growth and change to those involved. Also, it increases their self-awareness and enables them to gain sustenance from each other. Group counseling is also favorable to the therapist as they are able to gain faster and more efficient results for their members by counseling them simultaneously rather than one at a time. Jacobs, Mason, Harvill and Schimmel (2012) describe group counseling
Thus far in the program I have had the opportunity to experience the process of group therapy. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to run group sessions at my practicum site, so I have gained
