In the book ‘The Clay Marble’ written by Minfong Ho, several interesting characters are introduced. Although Chnay is a minor character in the story he has an important role to play. The complex nature of this character changes greatly from beginning to end, giving the reader much to think about as the story unfolds. In the beginning he is portrayed as a bully to the young children inside the Cambodian refugee camp, destroying the artwork they would make out of clay. Later in the story he becomes aligned with the main character, Dara, and helps her on her journey through the wilderness to find her family. Eventually throughout the story the author develops Chnay into a helpful child rather than a destructible one, helping the young girl …show more content…
Though he tries hard to hide it, his innate goodness shows through his tough exterior. Chnay is also a dynamic character due to the transformation of his attitude and personality. In the beginning he is this mean and ferocious child, bullying other children who are minding their own business. The children fear Chnay because when he first appears, he has fire ants running up and down his arm, biting him. He tells them that it doesn’t harm him, which makes them even more fearful of him (p. 30). Later, however, when the bombs are being dropped and Dara is separated from her family, he has a change of heart. He gives Dara information about where her family could be. When she asks him if he would like to accompany her, he surprisingly agrees (p. 57). We see further evidence of Chnay’s character later when he meets up with Dara and offers her his last bits of food. The author writes, “Chnay glanced at me, then rummaged in his pockets. He brought out a handful of cold rice wrapped in a a strip of banana leaf. ‘Here, take it,’ he said, squatting beside me” (p. 56). Although he puts up a front of being cruel and heartless, he actually does have feelings and sympathy for others. It is evident from this event that despite his tough guy persona, he dose crave friendship and acceptance from others. Chnay’s character traits also include leadership ability and resourcefulness. Without his help and guidance in the search for her

Chayo wanted nothing to do with her. She had explained that her anger was never towards Richard (Marta's son), but towards her sister. During those couple of years that had passed Marta has been regretting the decision she made before Richard was born. Marta said, "'Listen to me. It's been four years. I've paid for what I did. I pay for it everyday'" (Benítez 150). She wanted the love her sister once had for her. Marta knew that there was nothing she could've have done or have said to make her sister forgive her. Marta constantly tried until she finally gave in. On the night of their friend's wedding Tonito (Chayo's son) and Richard had asked Chayo if Richard could stay the night. Chayo agreed with hesitation. In the night a monumental storm had thrashed through. In the morning when Chayo and Cande had woken they searched outside damages. Later on they relieved that they sound they had been hearing was not a storm but the arroyo. They boys woke up soon after them and walked outside. When Chayo was mostly focused on the
Chonita is one of his playmates as well as a family friend. Her mother did his family's laundry for use of a one-room shack on a vacant plot of land belonging to his grandfather.
She also saves her pride and arrogance as the Choragos remarks, “Like father, like daughter: both headstrong, deaf to reason! She has never learned to yield.” She had many chances to prevent her demise but her pride stood in the way. Through the progression of scenes leading to her tragic ‘fall’, she is every bit of the woman she was at the beginning.

A famous man by the name of Kahlil Gibran once said, “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” It just happens that Cyrano’s heart shined brighter than anyone I have ever known. Through insecurities and heartbreaks, Cyrano would never forget his pride or the feelings of his friends. He never lost his honor and would always bring light into any situation, even when he was near his death. Cyrano displayed many positive traits and values such as loyalty, devotion, selflessness, knowledge, and pride which all contributed to our sympathy towards him.
After Charles and Lucie had been married, Sydney Carton never gave up. He asked Darnay if he could come and visit him and his family every time he wants so that he could see Lucie and her family if they are okay.
