Entrepreneurship is an incredibly difficult thing to define. Throw the question, “what is an entrepreneur?” out to a group of people and the answers you get back from person to person will be from simple things such as making money to incredibly complex personal characteristics including being socially aware and having the ability to develop personal networks.

The Oxford Dictionary Online (2014) describes an entrepreneur as someone who is “a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit” with Merriam-Webster Online (2014) and Collins Dictionary Online (2014) giving a definition along very similar lines. The Cambridge Dictionary Online (2014), however, discounts the necessity of monetary gain by describing it as “someone who starts their own business, especially when this involves seeing a new opportunity”.

When describing entrepreneurial characteristics, not just what it means to be an entrepreneur, I believe you must turn to the businessmen and businesswomen themselves. In 2006, Haoh Zhao and E. Scott published a journal, The Big Five Personality Dimensions and Entrepreneurial Status (2006), which analyzed 23 different research studies which contained interviews with entrepreneurs across a variety of industries and stages in their businesses. The Trust was founded in 1984 by McDermott and a group of other trustees and sought no financial help from the government. They believe that “too many communities and other groups depend on State aid thereby limiting the resources available for other worthy and noble causes” Their aim is, and always has been, to foster entrepreneurship in Dublin and throughout Ireland. Throughout their 30 years, with McDermott as director, they have helped more than 200 enterprises, creating employment for over 800 people.
