The Odyssey is an epic that was written by the Greek poet Homer in the 7th century BCE. The Odyssey talks about the struggles of the Greek hero Odysseus returning home to Ithaca after ten years of war against the city of Troy. In his journey, he is subjected to many strifes and miseries by the Sea-God Poseidon but he makes it home and is shocked by the major change in Ithaca (his kingdom and homeland) after he left twenty years prior. With the help of his son and Athene, he is able to kill the Suitors that were courting his wife and restore Ithaca to its former glory. In The Odyssey, we see some fatherly traits of Odysseus in the last five books after him and Telemachus kill the Suitors in the palace that are similar to my relationship with …show more content…
Odysseus trusts Telemachus quicker than he trusted Eumaeus with his identity, and that includes Penelope. The positive traits of Odysseus are that he is a family man and a caring person for his family. Odysseus as caring is true for Telemachus, but not as much for his father since when Odysseus went to visit his father he made up a story that said that Odysseus is still lost at sea which caused Laertes to reenter the world of grief and sorrow until Odysseus told him that he came back home. Odysseus does have negative traits and those are that he enjoys lying to people around him (that includes his family unless it's Telemachus) and he doesn’t understand the miseries about others around him such as his father or his wife. These are traits of Odysseus both as a father and as a person. These traits could be instrumental in being a good father or the downfall of Odysseus as a father. In my own father-son relationship, I was taught not to lie from an early age since it causes major problems among people who you trust, even if it is just for fun. However, that is the only negative trait about Odysseus as a father and as a …show more content…
Odysseus is interesting as a father since he is shrewd and a father’s shrewdness will eventually rub off on his son. But in The Odyssey, Telemachus inherited his father’s brains and used them to deal with the Suitors living in his home and even Penelope remarks on it. “As a boy, you used to have much greater shrewdness.” The Odyssey, Book 18, pg. 244. Odysseus is an interesting person since he saw most of the known world and suffered longer than any Greek hero of his time but he never let those experiences change him for the worst. This shows how interesting he is since most men would try to see their own family first despite the warning others gave them. However, Odysseus heeded Athene’s warnings and took care of anything that might stand in his way of getting his old life back and his family. Personally, my father is interesting since he has the most creative solution to any real-world problems and he uses his knowledge to become a great father and a role model for his
Odysseus’ bravery makes him an epic hero and also a role model, but what makes him a better one is his intelligence.
The Odyssey by Homer is an epic from Ancient Greece telling the tale of the great warrior Odysseus. It tells of Odysseus going to war and going through many trials to get back to his homeland, Ithaca. On Ithaca are his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus. Throughout the epic, Odysseus faces many challenges and trials in order to get home to his family, and even after he finally does arrive. Through all of the trials, each being extremely difficult, he pushes on to reach his family. This shows there are definitely bonds in the families. Of these, one that is apparent upon multiple occasions is the bond between father and son. Of course, the only father and son relationship isn’t just between Odysseus and Telemachus. There are many other examples of this family relationship, such as Poseidon and Polyphemus. But not only does the father and son relationship play a large role in the Odyssey. All family relations in general play a surprisingly large part in the Odyssey. Throughout the entirety of the story, family appears to be a great stimulus to persevere through the problem, no matter how challenging or fearful. One extreme example is of course is Odysseus. He traveled for 20 years fighting to return to his family, through unimaginable danger and the loss of roughly three crews. Family also appears to cause extreme retaliation and revenge. A superb example is how Poseidon reacts after Odysseus and his crew blind his son, Polyphemus. Another grand example is when Odysseus
Odysseus and Telemakhos are both clear-headed, eloquent, and emotional. These are but three of the traits that they share. They both can keep their head clear in battle, and think quickly to get out of bad situations. They both are able to use their powerful speech to get things to go their way. Both also can become very emotional at times. This shows what a great impact a father has on his son. By setting a good example for Telemakhos, Odysseus guaranteed that Telemakhos would be just as great a man as he
Odysseus was known for his many of his mental traits, but his most useful ones were his bravery cleverness, and wisdom. Without these helpful traits he probably would have died from the very beginning. Fortunately, he was granted with these traits so that he could come back to his kingdom of Ithaca to see his wife and son for the first time in twenty years and to also kill the suitors that tried to kill his son and take his wife, land, and possessions from him.
Father and son relationships in The Odyssey are very important. This novel tells us the story of the hero Odysseus and his journey back home after the Trojan War. His complications start after the fight when he is on his way back. On his journey home, he encounters multiple challenging obstacles. However, Odysseus and the gods are determined to get him back home to his son. The term “dynamic” is often used in literature to describe a character who changes drastically from one point in the story to another. When reading “The Odyssey” an epic poem by Homer, we see that our protagonist, Odysseus, changes throughout the course of the novel. This essay will argue how he changes, and also what changes him, such as his travels, his relationships, and how fate and the Greek gods affect and change him.
A major part of being a hero is trying to protect the ones you love from any harm, hurt, and danger. Odysseus, however, does not protect his family from harm because he leaves Ithaca for so long. In particular, Odysseus does not protect his wife from hurt when he cheats on her. Every minute of each day that Odysseus was gone, Penelope was mourning the absence of her husband, not knowing that he was deceiving her. Odysseus not only cheats on Penelope once, but twice. First, Odysseus is held sex captive by Calypso, a nymph goddess, on her island for many years. This means that at some point Odysseus had fallen for temptation. Odysseus then cheats on his wife yet again with another goddess named Circe. Although this affair does not last as long, Odysseus still sets
Gorgeous women, vengeful gods, helpful gods, numerous riches, ugly monsters, and a hero with his crew. The Odyssey of Homer, translated by Allen Mandelbaum, tells of the hero Odysseus' journey home from Troy. At his home in Ithaca, Odysseus' estate and wife, Penelope, have being overtaken by suitors. Along the way Odysseus learns many lessons about life as he grows from an immature lout to a humble, mature man.
Some people would like to have Odysseus as a father, however I’m not one of those people and I don’t understand why would anyone want a father like Odysseus, he not a good father nor a respectable husband, because a good husband won't sleep with two other demi-goddesses (Circe and Calypso), and he wasn’t put in that situation by accident, although polyphemus wanted to eat them as a leader he should've thought of the consequences before he took action, he had to keep in mind that he was poseidon’s son so instead of trying to run away he decided to become violent, so he did that to himself by blinding Poseidon’s son Polyphemus the Cyclops, which made Poseidon angry which caused a delay to his return home.
"Be careful to leave your sons well instructed rather than rich, for the hopes of the instructed are better than the wealth of the ignorant." This quote, stated by Epictetus, is an ideal depiction of the importance of father-son relationships in Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey. The protagonist of The Odyssey, Odysseus, fights among the other Greek heroes at Troy and struggles to return to his kingdom in Ithaca where his loyal wife, Penelope, and his loving son, Telemachus await. Telemachus is an infant when Odysseus leaves for Troy, leaving him alone with his concerned mother and her arrogant suitors. In father-son relationships, both fathers and sons provide and learn from each other while
He has loyalty, bravery, and courage. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is very loyal toward his men and will protect or rescue them if necessary. He’s brave and courageous when it comes to fighting and won’t hesitate to act. He’s also very clever. For example, Odysseus outwitted the Cyclops, Polyphemus, by giving a false name to disguise his identity. Amid all these qualities, there are still kinks in Odysseus’s character. His pride becomes evident after his confrontation with the Cyclops, where, after a narrow escape, he wished to bother Polyphemus again. His men had to plead to him, saying, “Godsake, Captain! Why bait the beast again? Let him alone!” Odysseus also struggles with selfish actions. For example, he feasts with Circe instead of rescuing his men first. The temptations got the better of him and in turn led him down the wrong

Odysseus travels from Ithaca to different islands to face cyclops, sirens, scary monsters, and sail back home safe to come back to his wife. As the story goes on Odysseus comes across temptations and has to fight to avoid them. Odysseus has good character traits that he shows and also bad character traits. Odysseus is a bad leader because he is boastful, not faithful to his wife, and is selfish
