Morrison takes experiences and characteristics, such as violence, love, family, hatred, race, beauty and ugliness and illustrates them in a way that is clear, but painful. These experiences are not toned down to seem less serious; they are heart breaking parts of life that are illustrated truthfully. To expose the harsh life lived by many, Morrison creates strong relatable characters. These characters create a need for empathy towards them, but the purpose is to take this love to traumatic victims in the real world. Morrison’s use of narrator change and choice of language gives the novel impactful perspective to the lives of african americans in a society where the color of your skin determines who you are.

Throughout the novel, we as the reader feel empathy towards someone who is so young and hates herself because of the color of her skin. Morrison conveys to us that even if the black community isn’t being directly targeted by racist remarks, that they are having a sort of second-hand reaction because of internalized racism. The strongly relatable characters, give a different perspective on internalized racism that I couldn’t comprehend as a white reader.
The use of diction within The Bluest Eye is meant to create inferential perspectives to reveal the two sides to internalized racism and the struggles that those in this situation are in by using things like connotation and irony throughout the novel. An important part to focus on the diction of the novel is when the perspective is told from Claudia with her dolls. Claudia feels nothing but hatred for these dolls because of what they stand for, but when everyone else is speaking about the dolls, they only say great things about them. Morrison uses connotative diction to set a double sided tone of envy and anger. When the dolls are described by Claudia, she uses words like “bleat” and “bone-cold”. Claudia doesn’t want to relate to the dolls, so she uses inhuman descriptions to not mimic the human baby model. However, when others speak of the doll, they use words like “sweet” and “dearness”. In Toni Morrison's Beloved, the Black literature author touches upon tough subjects such as slavery, the affects of slavery, and the cruelty that is brought by it. For a person to be cruel, they commit inhumane crimes against a victim or victims that ultimately dehumanizes them. This concept displays itself several times throughout the novel, depicted through the characters that represent not only the "sixty million and more," but also the broken system of a slavery-ruled society, effectively showing the affects of such heinous crimes. In Beloved, the community commits cruel acts to characters such as Paul D, Denver, and Sethe, prompting them to act cruely themselves.
It has always been assumed that races have a certain look; a person can always tell what a person is by their mannerisms, their speech and the overall way they carried themselves even if they looked a certain way. However, this is mainly due to stereotypes that have long plagued our society and what one “expects” someone to look like just based on the negative connotations that are associated with skin complexion. When we read certain literature, the description of the character is the first thing that we look for as it is a way for us to somewhat bond with the character and attempt to see the story through their eyes. Toni Morrison’s Recitatif explores how the author describes each character not expressing their race leaving a bit of mysery to the reader and attempts to breaks down the stereotypes that exist for each race. Through a literary analysis, the reader is able to see those stereotypical assumptions about the color of one’s skin and how they should cease to exist in any world whether it is literal or figurative.

While racial stereotypes contribute to the majority of the short story “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison, Morrison uses these stereotypes to convey a much larger issue. Morrison uses the stereotypes of intelligence, social class, and the character’s behavior and attitude to break the racial code. The two characters, Twyla and Roberta, realize that it is not about race but about their experiences of relating Maggie to their mothers that makes them similar. Many readers try to figure out which character is which race and as they go through, trying to figure out these clues. All they do is realize their own stereotypes.
Racism and sexism are both themes that are developed throughout the novel Sula, by Toni Morrison. The book is based around the black community of "The Bottom," which itself was established on a racist act. Later the characters in this town become racist as well. This internalized racism that develops may well be a survival tactic developed by the people over years, which still exists even at the end of the novel. The desire to feel beautiful has never been more in demand, yet so impossible to achieve. In the book “The Bluest Eye”, the author, Toni Morrison, tells the story of two black families that live during the mid-1900’s. Even though slavery is a thing of the past, discrimination and racism are still a big issue at this time. Through the whole book, characters struggle to feel beautiful and battle the curse of being ugly because of their skin color. Throughout the book Pecola feels ugly and does not like who she is because of her back skin. She believes the only thing that can ever make her beautiful is if she got blue eyes. Frieda, Pecola, Claudia, and other black characters have been taught that the key to being beautiful is by having white skin. So by being black, this makes them automatically ugly. In the final chapter of the book, the need to feel beautiful drives Pecola so crazy that she imagines that she has blue eyes. She thinks that people don’t want to look at her because they are jealous of her beauty, but the truth is they don’t look at her because she is pregnant. From the time these black girls are little, the belief that beauty comes from the color of their skin has been hammered into their mind. Mrs. Breedlove and Geraldine are also affected by the standards of beauty and the impossible goal to look and be accepted by white people. Throughout “The Bluest Eye” Toni Morrison uses the motif of beauty to portray its negative effect on characters.

The title of Toni Morrison's acclaimed novel "Song of Solomon" has a few meanings that can go along with it. The first is an allusion to the biblical book "Song of Songs" or commonly know as "Song of Solomon" which is all about sexual themes and desires and that. The next meaning is a reference to the protagonist's great grandfather whose name was Solomon and had a song about him in which Solomon could fly and left his son Jake on the ground and inevitably to a white man's house.
In the short story Recitatif by Toni Morrison, the author, admits to coding both characters Twyla and Roberta. In the context of the story and reading between the lines, we eventually figure out that there’s two girls, one’s black and the other one is white. When I began to read the story, I had to go back multiple times to figure out which one was black and which one was white. Toni Morrison admits to actually doing this on purpose. “But the reader doesn’t know this which is white and which is black. I used class codes, but no racial codes” (Mays & Morrison 253). This is brilliant! The author deliberately leaves it up to us to make the distinction. Racism is the theme of the story, from the beginning of their friendship to the very ending of the story. Roberta and Twyla may never actually be friends.
An author may choose to remove all racial codes in order to engage the reader to come to a conclusion of characters’ races on their own. In order to remove all racial codes, the author has to be careful about what details they reveal to the reader. For an author to remove racial code in a story adds to the suspension of the story. In “Recitiatif” by Toni Morrison, during the story, both Twyla’s and Roberta’s race are never given, but different situations in the book lead the reader to guess both their races. As the book continues, Morrison does a successful job by removing all racial codes, which makes readers set stereotypes by their own ideas.
Racism. Protests. Profiling. These three words are common buzzwords that are used in the United States media almost daily. They are used so often, some contend, that it has created a sense of apathy in the American public in regards to solving the age-old problem that has its roots grounded in slavery. Burns states, “[Toni] Morrison contends that the American history of slavery had been consciously “disremembered” so that it is conveniently shrouded by a comfortable state of national amnesia”. Likewise, in her novel the characters Sethe and Paul D in the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison also exist in a state of amnesia—but of their own slavery. In this essay, I will argue that in the novel Beloved, Toni Morrison use characters Sethe and Paul D and their willed forgetfulness of slavery and past actions to reveal the modern reader’s absent-mindedness of slavery and discussions of race.
