The Chivalrous: The Most Important Today

Chivalry is the type of thing that would be great to have in our society but I don’t believe that it exists too much anymore in the world today. Let me break down here some of the chivalry rules compared with the actions of the people of the current world.

Chivalry was designated for knights as a moral code or law for them to abide by, but sadly has been slowly being brushed under the rug by their following generations. Growing up I was taught certain aspects of a new hybrid of the Code of Chivalry such as courtesy, honor, humbleness, respect, and proper manners. Chivalry since medieval times has slowly dissipated into almost nothing compared to today. Now I am not suggesting that these traits have been lost indefinitely but they have certainly minimized. Parents are not teaching their children to be polite or use proper manners. Those traits are something I would like to thank my father for instilling in myself. I hold courtesy, honor, humbleness, respect, and proper manners highly because many people respect that. So how exactly did these values change me?

Some say chivalry is dead , I don't think so. Chivalry is a code of conduct governing a knight's behavior. It's the combination of qualities expected of an ideal person, especially bravery, loyalty,and honor.

Have you ever had an event change your life? When I took my first steps onto the marching band field for the first time, I realized I had found a place where I belonged. I quickly realized how the lessons I learned in marching band would become an integral part of my personal code of chivalry—a code that would guide not only my steps on the field but into my future as well. These three codes are: lead by example all the time, punctuality breeds perfection, and you can’t succeed if you have people do it for you. These codes have become values that exemplify not only the team member that I have become but also the adult I will continue to be.

Back in the middle ages when King Arthur ruled the throne, people lived by The Code of Chivalry. The Code of Chivalry lists the rules on how a knight should live his life with honor. This code was very important to the society during this time period. This was the code that they all lived by. When reading the code, it says “To live one’s life so that it is worthy of respect and honor by Fair Play, Nobility, Valor, Honor, Courtesy, and Loyalty. Next to each word, there are actions a knight must follow to uphold the code. Knights were expected to uphold the code by living with honor and respect and if they did not do so, they would be violating the code. An important part to the chivalric code is to respect. They had to respect host, women, sovereign, god, and the code itself. To uphold the code, knights had to be fair by avoiding things such as cheating and torture. They had to live life with honor by always keeping one’s word and respecting life. Knights who followed the code were recognized as honorable nights. Knights were expected to know that they must live by The Code of Chivalry. The chivalric code was like a “Constitution” for the middle ages.

In current society people are becoming more impatient, disrespectful, and self-centered. While this self-centered attitude may fulfill immediate needs, long-term consequences of this lifestyle can lead to the erosion of society. The problem is that younger generations are adopting this new lifestyle where they become more selfish and rude. Thus, everyone around them becomes selfish, and, as a result, society as a whole loses chivalry. Some people say chivalry is dead, however, practicing chivalrous acts every day can help prevent this egocentrism and keep this quintessential trait alive.

I don’t think that chivalry has a value in today’s world because we have many different religions. There are so much more religions than just Christianity. Also, not many people have a love for the church as they did back then. So not many people would just give their life to a church. Not everyone is in love with the land that we have today. Many people are fleeing the country now a days.

In class, we were given an article titled “Let’s Give Chivalry Another Chance”, and it was written by Emily Esfahani Smith. This article discussed chivalry and it debated if it was rightfully categorized as sexist. Deftly, the writer informed the audience of the controversy surrounding chivalry. At the same time, she was able to subtly add her feelings on the subject, as well as somewhat persuade the audience to feel the same way. Our goal was to read through the article and analyze the various elements the writer included in her writing.

Lastly, another major point about what chivalry is you have to have forgiveness. Forgiveness is what makes the backbone of every relationship. People are not perfect and if you can't have forgiveness towards them it will never work out. Bryant H. Chivalry is slowly dying and we need to bring it back into today's society. In modern time the chivalry code is not being used like it was in the middle ages. Chivalry once reflected the values and ideals of the knights. Usually these values exhibited kindness towards all women. It may help to clarify if you replace the word gallantry with chivalry. You may hear the common complaint that, “Chivalry is dead.” This grumble, usually uttered by woman, may be quite valid.
