On November 15, 1959, the Clutter family was found murdered in their home in Holcomb, Kansas. Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith were arrested for murdering the family of four six weeks after the crime was committed. During my research, I found that prior to the murder, Hickock and Smith were both in jail when a fellow prisoner, Floyd Wells, told Hickock about Mr. Clutter and the amount of cash he had stashed in a safe in his house. Hickock contacted Smith and convinced him to commit the robbery with him and start a new life in Mexico with the money. The two drove to Kansas and entered the house while the family was sleeping. The funny thing was, Hickock and Smith were unable to locate the safe. It was not in the place that Wells
You are correct when you state “It is always difficult to know for sure whether someone is guilty or innocent, even if they admit one way or the other” That was my first thought until I read into the case a bit more. I stated, “the son did it.” Because as you mentioned Mrs. Hossack did not have emotion until her son spoke, did she show emotion because she was afraid of what he may say? As far as the dog wouldn’t the son know the dog’s behaviors?
Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" is the story of Perry and Dick and the night of November 15, 1959. This investigative, fast-paced and straightforward documentary provides a commentary on the nature of American violence and examines the details of the motiveless murders of four members of the Clutter family and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers.
The detective genre is recognizable by the mystery that it represents or establishes. Every word of a fiction novel is chosen with a purpose, and that purpose on a detective novel is to create suspense. The excerpts from The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, Murder Is My Business by Lynette Prucha, and Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley, create an atmosphere of suspense and mystery. Even though they all fit into this category, there are some differences that make each novel unique. The imagery that the authors offer in the excerpts helps the reader to distinguish the similarities and the differences.
Hickock was able to use this to his advantage, often referring to Smith as “honey,” to appeal to his attraction (15). Hickock was the one who wanted to rob the Clutters originally; he was the one who obtained the information, albeit false, from Floyd Wells. Smith was persuaded later to help out, most likely by Hickock promising him a hefty sum from the job. Later, at the Clutters’ abode, Smith told Hickock, “‘these people are telling the truth. The one who lied is your friend Floyd Wells. There isn’t any safe, so let’s get the hell out of here,’” but, “He said he wouldn’t believe it till we searched the whole house,” and then, “says Dick, after we’ve found the safe, we’ll cut their throats” (239). Smith preferred not to kill them, and told Hickock he wanted to leave, but he refused to leave and insisted that they should continue searching and then kill them. Hickock directed Smith to murder the Clutters, which according to the wording of the law, proves he is guilty of this aggravating circumstance.
In Cold Blood is a true story based on two men, Dick and Perry. The two of them had very serious psychological issues, with Dick being a psychopath and Perry being a sociopath. Dick and Perry served time in prison together, which is where Dick heard about the Clutter family and that’s where he created the whole plan to murder them.
The two burglars were illegal immigrants from Colombia, Hernando Torres, age thirty-eight, and Diego Ortiz, age thirty. They left the house with a pillowcase containing jewelry and approximately $2000 in cash. A plainclothes officer arrived just in time to see the three men facing off across Horn’s lawn, and soon both of the burglars were dead. Torres’s body was across the street in the yard of a Pasadena police officer and Ortiz fell onto a neighbor’s lawn, leaving bloodstains on the sidewalk.
Many people say the documentation of the murder of the Clutter family is Truman Capote’s best work. It started out as an article for The New Yorker, and evolved into the non-fiction novel; the first of its kind. Capote traveled to Kansas with friend Harper Lee to research the killings. In the course of six years bringing this narrative together, Capote began taking drugs and drinking heavily due to the dark nature of the book. Truman Capote tells the true story of a family murdered in In Cold Blood, through character analysis and symbolism to prove nature is a stronger force than nature in shaping a person’s character.
We see two heartless, cold blooded killers that slain the innocent family of the Clutters with the intent to leave no witnesses and to rob them of their hard earned money but Capote deceives the reader's emotions throughout the entirety of the book to humanize straight killers and make them likable. We often see a murderer as a psychopath without any emotion but it is hard to label Smith and Hickock one because Capote brings the reader into their lives in a way that we would feel sorry and have pity for them. Capote makes the reader relate to Smith and Hickock by describing their families and showing insight into the killers’ dreams and aspirations so we could perceive them as people and forget that they ended the future of the Clutters. Perry was a lonely child growing up and had a drunkard mother that forced him into foster care where he was abused and bullied
No one can say for sure that if the murders of the Clutter family were sent into the time of Columbine that they could have potentially been the two boys at Columbine, or vice versa. However, it is far more likely that these two
Murder on a Sunday Morning is about an African American boy who was wrongly convicted of murder. He was only fifteen years old when his life changed forever. While first watching the documentary, it seems to the audience that Brenton Butler, the convicted boy, is guilty. Mr. Stephens, husband of the victim, Ann Stephens, claims that Butler came over, tried to take Anna Stephens’ purse, and then before she could comply, he raised his gun and shot her in the face. Sadly, Mr. Stephens was the only eye-witness, which is a major red flag, as he is connected to the victim. After being forced by the detective, Butler confesses. Once defense attorney, Patrick McGuinness is involved, he has Butler tell the court of his innocence and thus beings the criminal proceedings for Brenton Butler.
In the book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, the Clutter family is murdered with apparently no motive and the killers leave almost no evidence. In order to figure out who the killers are, the KBI, or Kansas Bureau of Investigations, follows an order of operations. First, they look for physical evidence at the scene of the crime; then they talk to people who knew the Clutters and/or lived near them at the time of the murders; next, they take tips called in by various citizens; and finally, they systematically track down and interview anyone who had ever been employed by the Clutter family. By doing all these things, the KBI tracked down the killers and apprehended them in the end.

Murder/ crime mystery is a popularly watched genre on television. These shows display the actions and job descriptions of forensic anthropologists, however, due to time requirements and for the interest of the plot, there are many aspects that are not preformed or done so inaccurately. Specifically, these inaccuracies mainly fall into two overall processes, recovery and laboratory analysis. In season six- episode ten of Bones, the FBI and the scientists from the Jeffersonian Institute investigate a murder of set of remains found in a hot, running shower. For the most part, these remains are fleshed, with the exception of hair and small bone fragments that were flushed down the drain.
Their plan was that Robert would be on the opposite side of the property. He would shoot the cow and then shoot his pistol into the air inorder to draw everyone to that side of the property.
