In Junior high, our history teacher taught us that my native country, Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch for 350 years. The Netherlands is one of the European countries that established its country over Indonesia to take benefits of our rich land such as spices. I was aware our land is very source full of spices, rice, sugar, coffee. The Dutch colonized us with the focus of monopoly through trading. Because of the most important source of the spices of this rich land of Indonesia, the Netherlands profits from our land with tremendous wealth. In colonialism era, the United State of America and the Great Britain maintain a good report to respect their laws. Both countries allow independence for their colonies. On the other hands, European country such as the Netherlands, Spain, and France are very restricted to their colonies, for examples, they limited education to certain social groups. Also, Southeast Asia is restricted to engage in economic activities. This causes many corruptions that huge problems in these European countries. This colonial authority did not support the rule of law to its own country, it is only to Asian, in this case is Indonesian. They only control on our people but not their people. Moreover, they control our politic, economic, and cultural. This colonial authority, the Dutch did not provide civil liberties to our Indonesian. There is no freedom of assembly when they colonized us. Only to certain social group, this colonial authorized the
There is an extensive history empirical power, repeatedly and successfully controlling another state or group of people in order to exploit it economically. In Southeast Asia there were 5 colonial powers; the United Kingdom, France, Dutch, America, and Japan, their primary motives for establishing colonies in the region was to get control of trade routes, to get access to the natural resources and raw materials, and the cheap labor, as well as to establish naval and military bases so that they could amass influence in the region. Prior to World War II, a third of the world 's area was colonized by European colonial powers between the 15th and 19th centuries, and another third of the world 's population were in colonies, dependencies, protectorates, or dominions. In this essay, I will focus on the British and French colonization in Southeast Asia. The British-controlled Burma, most of the Malayan peninsula, and Singapore, which was a strategic port and later became a naval base for the British. Meanwhile, the French controlled the adjoining countries of Vietnamese, Cambodia, and Laos, collectively known as French Indochina. This period of colonization in Southeast Asia brought many changes to the regions society, politics, and the economy. For instance, both colonial powers introduced political changes such as introducing a centralized form of government and changes to the justice systems in many of the colonized countries. There were also social impacts resulting from the
As we examine the impacts of colonialism on Western Imperialism and the legacy it has created in respect to LDCs (Less Developed Countries) and NICs (Newly Industrializing Countries), we must first evaluate colonialism and imperialism to understand the implications it has had historically on the legacy of Western Imperialism. This allows us the inept ability to better understand the political, social and economic impacts. Imperialism is then defined as the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. Imperialism was propagated by European powers from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. Colonialism is defined as the control or governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people. Imperialism has often led to colonialism, through the physical occupation of foreign territories; people had previously tried to establish their own institutions but were unsuccessful. The state of imperialism seemed to be stronger and had the ability to overpower those institutions, which in turn resulted in those states then being colonized. Unfortunately, this would eventually lead to civil wars and militarized states.Particularly during the late 19th and early 20th century, colonialism had tremendous amounts of negative effects on the economic, social, and political structures of less developed countries and non-industrialized people. The idea of colonialism is to take resources from one country to use for the benefit of the colonizing country.Europe began expanded to other continents in an effort to conquer additional territories.
Primary sources from Europeans, Amerindians, and Africans had revealed the early modern Atlantic world was developed by colonization, and the experience faced by each civilization. As the Europeans began to colonize the Amerindians land it had been done by war to capture riches and land. Colonization of Africa had been established much early by the Europeans using their land for human-slave and merchant trade. The different civilizations had experienced this processing of developing the modern Atlantic world differently. The Europeans sought these new lands as a way to expand its civilization by gaining wealth and power. As for the Amerindians and Africans they had an experience that was developed through devastation and loss of their humanity.
That Colonialism and imperialism played a significant role in shaping the modern world and particularly Asia is a prudent judgment. Colonialism is "a policy in which a country rules other nations and develops trade for its own benefit" and "the extension of power or authority over others in the interests of domination" (2004). 'The West', which refers to the societies of Europe and their genealogical, colonial, and philosophical descendants. Spain, France, Britain, Canada, and the United States of America are some examples of Western societies. These countries have spread their influence and hegemony over other nations for centuries; shaping today's North America,
Imperialism and colonialism have changed the perception of international relations in present day. Imperialism is a policy that enhances the power of a country through authority. For example, the authority would be an emperor, empress, military, government, etc. The imperialism and colonialism policy correlate to each other. Colonialism is a practice of obtaining full or partial control over other countries or areas filling these places with settlers and harnessing it economically (Amardeep, 2001). This practice is usually seen when countries with less power become overpowered by another country in which they take over and colonize their areas. When thinking about these two practices you may see colonialism as the actual practice and imperialism as the idea guiding the practice.
As the English neglected mid-atlantic area the Dutch and Swedes were able to create their own colonies of New Netherland and New Sweden. As the crown made many royal charters to establish Proprietary colonies slowly England began to convert some of its colonies into royal colonies. This took a long time to recognize less profitable colonies such as New England which was very against becoming a royal colony. To try and impress the New English, England conquered New Netherland showing its intimidating power. Although small the New Netherland colony was very remarkable showing Dutch power. Netherlands the home of the Dutch was very big into policies of religious toleration and intellectual freedom. These ideas with the economic ambition of the Dutch turned the Netherlands into an economic giant.
Several contemporary historians have concluded that Dutch imperialism 'was of an accidental...variety and displayed a more 'informal character' than the combative imperial adventures into pristine territory of other European nations in the late nineteenth century'. Dutch imperialism was mainly motivated by commercial interests, and the colonies that it did hold were formed with an economical mindset. The Dutch empire was formed from its political control in the Netherlands and through the efficiency of the Dutch East India Company. Furthermore the Dutch were invested in a protracted war against Spain in order to maintain their independence. Finally, the Dutch Netherlands were not only the commercial centre of Europe but also held a part in
Imperialism is when one powerful nation dominates a weaker nation. Nations should not imperialize others and they are many reasons why, that are shown in history. The first reason is imperialism causes a hostile environment between the nation imperializing and the nation being imperialized. Next, the negative outcomes outweigh the positive. In other words, when there is little good that comes out of expanding one nation, why would a nation take that risk?
As European nations traversed the seas seeking riches, spices, and new beginnings, cultural anxieties began to surface that greatly shaped society in the colonies and on the home front. Mass colonization of the Americas, Africa, India, and Australia created a new world staunchly different from the normative and “proper” societal life that defined Britain during the nineteenth century. European colonizers found themselves amongst natives, people they not only misunderstood but sought to reform in order to fit the British hegemony during this period. However, colonizers did not only transform the way of life for those they colonized, but the native populations also had a firm influence on the cultural shifts that would shake and shape British empire. As Britain became the major formal empire of the world by the late nineteenth century, colonial life began to influence understandings of gender, sexuality, indigenous culture, and race. Power struggles rocked colonial establishments and the idea of freedom from the sexually composed values on the home front flourished, creating a sexually charged atmosphere that would trigger cultural anxieties throughout the colonies and in Britain. Maintenance of the masculine preserve that strengthened the framework of British rule was constantly questioned, fueling colonial anxieties and the continued construction of racial and gender hierarchies that would perpetuate well into the twentieth century. The popularity of rape scandals and
In my paper I will be discussing the different colonies in the new world. I will talk about the main settlers in the new world including; the Europeans, the Spanish, the Dutch, the French. How these settlers interact will be the main topic of my report. I will also discuss the effect these settlers had on the Indians that lived in the territories they claimed.
In the 16th to mid-20th century, Western powers and knowledge have dominated other countries, due to the Western superiority to the other cultures in terms of civilization. According to Said, having knowledge is to dominate it; having authority is to deny autonomy to the Oriental country. Evidently, the inaccurate Western cultural perception towards Eastern world has resulted in the practice of power over, what they presumed, the 'weaker' countries. Java was once an influential Hindu-Buddhist empire and yet, it became one of the victims under colonial rule.
The independence of the Philippines brought a new hope to the citizens that they would finally be able to govern themselves. Imperialization from the Spanish in the 1500’s, followed by U.S. control up until the end of World War II left the country hungry for economic resources and trustworthy leaders. Even with independence from the United States, they were unable to escape from unethical, elite leaders that were favored by the US government. Numerous citizens and nationalist leaders attempted to revive the economy multiple times, yet there was always some way it would fail. Although there were notable benefits in the aftermath of their independence, such as better commerce and strong leaders who brought economic progress, overall its impacts
1. Discuss the common elements of colonization movements in south Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The Philippines was very lucky because our country was rich in natural resources. And that is the reason why many foreign countries had colonized our country.
Going back further in history on why the Dutch decided to colonize what is now modern Indonesia was because they were violently attacked by their neighbor, Germany, for five years. After having dealt with Germany, the Dutch finally received some reinforcements. With the help of reinforcements, the Dutch were liberated. After they
