According to Alan Walker's The Color Purple, she explores the theme that storytelling and communication are crucial for a person to gain self-understanding and breaks the emotional gap between people with different races and genders. Walker criticizes that the white males are accustomed to dominating the black while the black keep silent, "but it's the way that people distance themselves from their own history, and their own participation in what is very bloody and depressing behavior, over centuries" (Interview Walker's interview "Free Spirit''). The first part argues that the pen and voice are weapons for women to liberate themselves under a patriarchy. The second part illustrates how communication successfully reshapes the female identity into an independent and confident woman and transforms the abusive sexists into the caring and kind people who listen. The third part clarifies that the power of language provokes people of different races and genders to reconcile. First of all, Walker uses her pen as a sword of thoughts to strive to break people' s stereotypes about female and male characteristics under a patriarchy.
