Document I uses imagery to portray the amount of power held by Andrew Jackson, president at the time and relating it to that of a king. One of the larger symbols of the political cartoon is the color purple. Purple is the color of royalty, thus he is wearing robes of purple as well as surrounded by it. The slow covering of the Constitution and the bank by this purple color and Jackson standing on it is representative of how the country, more specifically the president, was trampling the Constitution and destroying what it stood for. It was being replaced by a system reflecting that of the British, a monarchy. This deeply contrasted to what the Jacksonian Democrats thought of themselves. They were not “Guardians of the United States

There are numerous works of literature that recount a story- a story from which inspiration flourishes, providing a source of liberating motivation to its audience, or a story that simply aspires to touch the hearts and souls of all of those who read it. One of the most prevalent themes in historical types of these kinds of literature is racism. In America specifically, African Americans endured racism heavily, especially in the South, and did not gain equal rights until the 1960s. In her renowned book The Color Purple, Alice Walker narrates the journey of an African American woman, Celie Johnson (Harris), who experiences racism, sexism, and enduring hardships throughout the course of her life; nonetheless, through the help of friends and
Compare the ways in which the writers of The Help and The Color Purple explore violence within the lives of black African Americans.
He starts the chapter by saying that the Constitution at first glance seems like a cold, formal document and it gives no special property qualifications on any office- but if one analyzes the events that lead up to the creation, it paints a different narrative. He then goes on to analyze several different documents and histories from the time period such as the well known Federalist Papers to come to the conclusion that “Enough has been said to show that the concept of the Constitution as a piece of abstract legislation reflecting no group interests and recognizing no economic antagonisms is entirely false. It was an economic document drawn with superb skill by men whose property interests were immediately at stake; and as such it appealed directly and unerringly to identical interests in the country at large”
A cartoon created by the Whigs during the election of 1832 portrayed in Document E illustrates how Jackson has taken on so much power and becomes a tyrannical ruler. He stands with the veto power in one hand and a scepter, symbol of authority in the other. In addition, Jackson is also stepping on the U.S. Constitution under one foot and two important creations of Congress, Internal Improvements and The Bank of the United States. Taking all the details together, we can tell that Jackson is thwarting Constitutional democracy. Document F, Jackson’s Veto Message to Congress explains how the rechartering of the National Bank could hurt the nation. Of the twentyfive directors of the bank, five are chosen by government and twenty by the citizen stockholders. Thus, the rich might “bend the acts of government for their selfish purposes.” The evidence shows that Jackson wanted to benefit the rich class instead of the nation as a whole. Jackson’s veto was undemocratic because he did not let the citizens have a say in the workings of government. By vetoing the recharter bill, it would create conflict which would weaken the
The documents in “The Age of Jackson”, fall into two themes, government development and territory advancement. The government development is the theme of “John C. Calhoun Argues for the Right of States,1828” in document one, “Daniel Webster Lays Out His Nationalist Vision,1830” in the second document, “Andrew Jackson Condemns the Right of Nullification and Secession, 1832” in the third document, “Historian George Bancroft Assert His faith in the Wisdom of the people, 1835” in the fourth document, “John L. O’Sullivan, a Democratic Newspaperman, Venerates Democracy and the “Democratic Principle” in the sixth document, and “Michel Chevelier, a French Visitor, Marvels at the pageantry of Policies, 1839” in the seventh document. Moreover, the territory advance is the theme of “Lieutenant-Colonial Jose Enrique de la Pena Defends Mexico’s Actions against the Texans” in the fifth document, “John L. O’ Sullivan Defines “Manifest Destiny” in the eighth document, “Senator Thomas Hart Benton Justifies White Supremacy” in the ninth document, and “Senator John Dix, Advance into Mexico” in the tenth document.
Andrew Jackson was elected as the seventh president of the United States in 1829 until 1837. There is a debate about Jackson asking if he was democratic or not. Jackson was a democratic leader because he listened to the people and gave the common people government jobs, but helping the people was only to benefit himself. By giving jobs and listening to the people he got more votes, which is what he wanted. Although Andrew Jackson wanted to government to be a democracy, his actions and values disproved the ideas of a democratic system.
These Jacksonian Democrats considered themselves the ultimate guardians of the Constitution, mainly because they believed in a strict constructionist view of it. In 1832, the charter for the US Bank was to expire and he vetoed the bill. He thought that the bank was unconstitutional and that it was “a monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange… [And] danger to our liberty.” (Doc B) In this document, Jackson’s perspective is that the
We know that the Jacksonians publically proclaimed to be representatives of the "common" people. I learned that December 1829, the date given on the document, means that it was written within the first year that Jacksonian Democrats held power. Knowing this suggests that the “working man” of society was not satisfied with the current laws which infringed their rights. From the document I infer that those supporters of George Evans and the common man thought that they were being deprived of education, the law system was unequal in that it favored the rich, and the right to tax was still in high favor of those already of high status. Three years later we see Andrew Jackson taking a firm opposition on the bill Congress passed to recharter the Bank of the United States.
The first king, president of the United States was Andrew Jackson. President Jackson ran two terms was from 1829 to 1837. Jackson was the first president to grow up from a poor family, he was born on the border of North and South Carolina in 1767. He first volunteered in the Revolutionary War, when he was 13.Jackson was captured and badly wounded Jackson was let free thanks to a prisoner exchange and served. He returned home to his widow mother, but unfortunately his mother died shortly after.
He took too much control over the government by vetoing many laws and turning down ideas, like the second national bank. In Document E, the Point of view from the author is that Andrew Jackson has too much control over the government. To prove this, the author writes words around the drawing are saying that he is like a king since he vetoes laws. The portrait also shows him dressed like a king and a paper that says the word veto on it. We had learned that Andrew Jackson had created the Implemented Spoils System, which could relate to this because he had gained more money that way. To Summarize this paragraph, Andrew Jackson should not be on the 20 dollar bill because of his actions by taking too much control over the
