The Concentration Camps During The Holocaust

Have you ever heard of the nasty, disgusting, and horrible conditions that jews had to suffer with in concentration camps during the Holocaust? Lice and fleas are a big part of conditions in concentration camps, another horrible condition in the camps are diseases and sanitation, lastly another awful condition in concentration camps is mass murder and starvation. Many people died in concentration camps during the Holocaust because of the environment the jews had to live in and deal with, and many families were split and torn apart because loved ones of theirs had died because of the horrible conditions in the camps.

To begin, concentration camps did not originate in World War II. In fact, this idea for a camp was invented by soldiers and generals in other wars that occurred not too many years before The Holocaust. The first concentration was brought up by general Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau in the Cuban insurrection against Spain in 1896. Concentration camps were also used in the Philippine-American war in the first decade of the 1900’s. The concentration camps in these wars just mentioned were used mainly for labor and penal. The Holocaust nearly made the Jewish population and religion disappear from the face of the Earth. From January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945; Adolf Hitler, German politician and leader of the Nazi party, ran the Holocaust all over Germany and Eastern Europe. Prisoners and victims of the Holocaust include: the majority of the Jewish population, German Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats, Roma (Gypsies), Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, and people accused of socially deviant or socially unacceptable behavior. They were sent to many different areas that had different purposes. The most used places they were sent to are called concentration camps. Once they entered the concentration camps, there was no escaping; those people officially became prisoners. There were 23 main concentration camps and around 900 sub camps. Concentration camps tricked the Jewish people into coming into them by offering them a better life on the welcoming signs outside. Some of the main camps had many different inhumane uses. All of the camps are notorious for their cruel and evil ways of everything that they did to prisoners, such as the genocide the Holocaust caused (Concentration Camps, Killing Methods, Jewish Population).

Eleven million people died during the Holocaust of these eleven million people 2.4 million died from medical experiments conducted by German forces. These experiments were conducted mainly for three reasons. The first of which was to help the Germans gain knowledge that would help them better understand things that would have been viewed as threats or weaknesses to their military (Holocaust Museum). For example the Germans knew little of hypothermia and the weather located on the eastern front, so freezing experiments were conducted at Auschwitz concentration camp where most of their medical experiments occurred (Remember ). Just imagine if yourself, friends or family were sent away to a concentration camp. How would that make you feel? I would feel sad and scared for my family or for myself. It’s an awful thing to think about. Concentration camps were meant to starve and work prisoners to their death. In concentration camps, many prisoners were tortured and soon thereafter, died. There were many concentration camps and a lot of horrible things happened. Such as the number of people dying, and poor treatment of prisoners. Adolf Hitler made this all happen.

The holocaust was a Genocide in which Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany and its collaborates killed about six million Jews. First they took them out of their homes and sent them to work camps and then after that to extermination camps. The concentration camps were designed to be a factory of death and no one was supposed to survive. Over all mostly Jews were sent there but politicians were also sent to the camps because they were seen as threats to Germany.

This horrible event took place between 1933-1945 (“Children” par. 1) mainly in Germany and Poland (Altman 5). In the Holocaust, Jewish men, women, children, and Nazis were the main people involved (Byers 11). The Holocaust was the persecution of 6 million Jews and millions of others forced to, live in ghettos, deported to camps, and systematically annihilated until the Allied forces liberated the remaining survivors.

While there were many death camps that opened during the Jewish Holocaust, none of them compare to the opening of Birkenau in 1941. Birkenau opened and before it was liberated “the camp killed about 1.3 million people” (“Auschwitz”). Birkenau was a factory of death. This place was a monstrosity for all of the prisoners. They slept in a bunk with two or three other people and a blanket per person. Once the prisoners were there, they learned that life would not be easy. The Holocaust was a traumatic event that caused the deaths of over 6 million Jews. In today’s world, people don’t know what really happened inside the hell holes they called Concentration Camps. Jews, Gypsies, Gays, and elderly people were worked to death inside the detainment centers. To prevent a massive genocidal act like this from happening again, learning from past mistakes could prevent them from happening again.

Anti-semitism in Germany led by Adolf Hitler would back up a plan called the final solution, to exterminate all of the Jews in Europe. Out of the 100 million Jews aimed for extermination, 6 million of them were killed. On his path to German greatness, Jews became victim to inconceivable actions. First the Nuremberg Laws were passed which stripped Jews of their german citizenship, eliminating their opportunity to flee to other countries. After Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Hitler forcefully deported Jewish people into fenced confinements called ghettos. More Jews died here than in any extermination camp due to the harsh conditions and labor. Most people living in ghettos had no access to running water or a sewage system and overcrowding

The concentration camps is where Jews died by starving, diseases, gas chambers, and tested on. My topic is about concentration camps and how people lived in them and how they were being tortured for being Jewish. The Nazis, who came to power with the leader Adolf Hitler in Germany in January 1933, believed in a radical “genetic” restricting of society where ethnic cleansing of Jews was the main priority. Nazi regime wanted to make German Aryan race “superior” and the Jews were considered “inferior” within German racial community. The Holocaust was state-sponsored organized oppression and homicide of six million Jews by the Nazi regime. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also targeted other groups, and the process involved, the sterilization of those thought to be social misfits, the killing of the disabled, homosexuals and Roma, the enslaving of Slavs and the selective dispensing of welfare according to interpretations of “genetic worth” (Finaldi, 96). After Nazis took over the government in Germany, their National Socialist government established concentration camps for their political opponents. However, before the outbreak of war, Nazi officials started using these camps for incarceration of Jews, and other victims of racial and ethnic hatred. Millions of innocent people were murdered just because of their ethnic or racial differences, however, thousands were lucky enough to survive from Nazi tyranny.
