In modern life, we are desperate to get many things done. We always simultaneously deal with various tasks at work, study and home. For example, today, I had to prepare Power points slides for my presentation at a meeting next week. But, a telephone frequently rings and costumers ask me questions about our company’s services and I have to politely explain them. At the same time, my boss sometimes asked me to come his office and explain the progress of projects. I couldn’t concentrate on making slides and as always, I had to work overtime. I came back home at 9:00 pm. I was very hungry but don’t have energy to cook healthy foods by myself. So, I ate a precooked noodle, which was ready by just pouring hot water into it. Things always keep on going like this. I have to deal with multitask and this makes us exhausted —— This is called “ Mental fatigue ”, a suffering for everyone in modern life. What is “Mental fatigue”? According to a site “Mental Fatigue”, mental fatigue is defined as a condition characterised by “inactivity to concentrate, making more mistakes than usual, difficulty in learning and clumsiness”. There are some kind of causes for this condition. In the website, five causes are listed and explained as following: 1 Working the brain too hard – continuously engaging in a difficult task for too long is a classic cause of mental fatigue. Forcing yourself to continue to stay focused on the task will just increase the mental fatigue. 2 Not getting enough sleep –
While I was doing research for fasting rules, I noticed one of them was to not complain. I wondered the significance of stop people from complaining. To answer my question, I memorized the rule and carefully tried to practice it. Though I noticed that I broke the rule several times, I was content with my attempt. Once during dinner time, I heard other students complain about their sufferings. Sitting by them, I tried to stop myself from entering the conversation. I noticed that the dinner table was filled with negative emotions. I felt depressed after hearing all the grumbles. Finally, on Friday, the last day of deprivation week, I shared my concerns with my roommate. However, she criticized for my grumbling. I was shocked with full of regrets and guilty that I ignored my roommate’s feeling when I selfishly inject my personal negative thoughts to her. At the same time, as both a complainer and a person who was complained to, I totally understood her feelings. When others complained, I felt like they were copying their hardships and paste these hardships on mine. I found myself similar to them that I never considered other’s difficulties before groaning about mine. Reflecting on myself, I found that it is the selfishness and a lack of empathy that caused me to complain. Learning from the experience, I discovered the importance of
During my three-day food intake I learned about myself. There are many benefits of good nutrition. ”Medical Online” states “besides helping you maintain a healthy weight, good nutrition is essential for the body and all its system to function optimally for a lifetime.” A healthy diet promotes good sleep, gives the body what it needs to stay healthy, and provides energy. According to “Mealtime Memo” Good nutrition means getting the calories that we need for energy and the nutrients we need for proper growth. I’m learning that variety, balance, and moderation are the key to healthy nutrition. As I am learning what I should and should not eat I will like you to invite you to take a look at my food intake. This essay will converse about my
Post-traumatic stress disorder. Battle fatigue. Shell shock. All of these are names of mental disorders that soldiers come home with. The damage is caused by war. “What they [the soldiers] have seen and been forced to do is frequently so horrific and devastating that it simply cannot be tolerated by the human psyche” (xiii). The consciences of soldiers that participate in war can’t handle what they have seen and done, causing disorders such as the ones above. Soldier’s heart is similar to the aforementioned ailments. During the civil war, “Some men came through combat unscathed. Most did not. These men were somehow different from other men. They were said to have soldier’s heart.” A soldier has soldier’s heart when they come back from war harmed
Food is the most tedious task of the day, and it often occupies your mind at all times, especially in your sleep. Waking up in the dark, cold corner of Herman Ave, I find myself lying down under a tree confused by my surroundings. In a panic, my feet jump to touch the ground trying to search for a familiar sight. Once all the memories from the night before immerge, I recall not eating for the past two days and that has brought short -term memory loss every time I awake. I feel my body eating itself from the inside, and I muster the strength to walk to the corner of a 711 gas station to beg for change. Dozens of people walk pass me and give me a smug face and stare at me as if I were a foreign animal in a cage—out on display for their amusement. Two hours pass before I collect enough money to purchase a ninety-nine cent doughnut. After satisfying my hunger, I go to my favorite location where I search for food—a subway shop on Vasco Road. Thinking back to two hours ago, I wondered why I didn’t initially come to this location instead of showcasing myself at 711; my brain must have lacked oxygen. The walk from 711 to Subway is minimal; it took (takes) me one minute to arrive. I look inside the sandwich shop to reassure myself that there is only one employee working, and I dash to
People should be punished for not taking action in a life and death situation. In the article the author, Jay Sterling Silver, believes that civil liability should be established for everyone everywhere. I somewhat agree with his point because it’s the right thing to do but that’s not always the case. During a life and death situation people tend to panic and when they do they start to lose control because they are torn between taking action or calling 911 but it might be too late for that. People will act without precaution in an emergency or some will not act at all because they’re scared they might make the situation worse than what it is.

Rhinehart, the creator of Soylent, concocted it in order to diminish the downtime he spent obtaining, consuming, and disposing of meals, thereby effectively augmenting the time he could focus on productive endeavors. As most professions rely on the optimization of time to meet deadlines, Soylent would be ideal to sustain large corporations who require their employees to work perpetually around the clock. By supplying their workers with Soylent, which has all the necessary nourishment, these companies can simultaneously minimize respite and maximize output. Likewise, a similar case could made for students who would obtain more time to study, work, and pursue their interests without interruption. However, without a scheduled break to eagerly look forward to halfway through the workday, psychologically, employees would become apathetic towards their work and may even fall into depression. Widdicombe supports this notion in her article lamenting, “With a bottle of Soylent... time stretches before you, featureless and a little sad”. The unfortunate fact is that while technology is fitted to refine production, people are not designed to labor flawlessly. Psychologist Nathan Kleitman describes the human mind to work on an Ultradian rhythm that devotes the mind’s attention towards a given task for only 90 to 120 minutes before it must take a break. Therefore, removing coffee or lunch breaks from the working world may ironically decrease productivity in the long run. Herein lies one of Soylent’s design flaws; Soylent intends to optimize human beings who are innately
Chronic fatigue is the first symptoms when it comes to this disease. When you have chronic fatigue you will experience an extreme tiredness that cannot be explained. You will find it harder to do the things that you used to do with ease and you may want to sleep all the time.
Many have felt the effects of sleep deprivation and how it may affect one physically and mentally. For a nurse, when exhaustion sets in due to working long hours or inadequate sleep cognitive and physical functions begin to decrease resulting in poor critical thinking and clinical judgment. There may be circumstances, such as staffing shortages, which
Muscle fatigue occurs when the muscle system experiences a reduction in its ability to produce force and accomplish a desired movement. Muscle Fatigue is caused by the limitation of a nerves ability to generate a sustained signal or known as a neural fatigue as well as the reduced ability of a muscle fibre to contact (metabolic fatigue).

There are barriers to CRF occurring at the patient, professional and system levels. The patients barrier is due to the patient believing that their fatigue is not important, that it is inevitable or untreatable. Patients usually do not consider fatigue as a valid problem to complain about to their providers. Even when patients communicate an overwhelming or severe fatigue, they are not sure about the process that care health care providers will use to diagnosis their fatigue (Borneman, 2007). Barriers at the professional levels, include a lack of knowledge about the complex nature of fatigue. Also there is lack in literature agreement about the definition of fatigue, it’s causes, effects and remedies used for fatigue management. Usually health care providers focus on managing pain and nausea because they interfere with quality of life but fatigue is not considered one of these symptoms that needs to be addressed.
With all of our modern advances, it seems somewhat strange that chronic health problems have become so commonplace. When antibiotics were discovered, they predicted the end of disease. Instead, we now have a world full of frightening antibiotic resistant infections.
In modern aviation, pilot fatigue has become a vital problem that needs urgent intervention. The full effect of fatigue is frequently unforeseen however, many of its harmful effects have been known for a long time. When comparing with individuals who usually have enough rest, individuals who suffer from fatigue act slowly, have difficulties in memory, and are involved in many mistakes. In addition, the negative impact can or may lead to aviation accidents and errors (Caldwell, Mallis, Caldwell, Paul, Miller, & Neri, 2009).
Perceived fatigue at work is often viewed as important, because it may interfere with the high efficiency demanded in many occupational settings. Examples of effects of fatigue are poor judgement, omission of details, and generally, inadequate performance. Fatigue that becomes chronic or excessive may interfere with a person's quality of life, and without recovery prolonged fatigue may also lead to work-related disorders. Managing human fatigue and reducing excessive fatigue are of significance in areas such as healthcare industry, where fatigue has been shown to be an influential factor in a variety of medical errors result in substantial unnecessary personal and economic costs (Tourangeau et al. 2006). DeLuca emphasize the complex nature of
