Bombing Hiroshima August 6th, 1945, 2:45, United States, Enola Gay departs America carrying the most destructive bomb ever created. The horrid World War II would eventually end due to this, but in the process some 210,000 innocent lives were lost in Hiroshima due to the deadly weapon. (Garner 3-4). Although the bombing of Hiroshima ended World War II, it was unquestionably an awful way of doing it. Ten of thousands of people died, a whole city was destroyed, and the after fact of the radiation lasted for years after the initial blast. The war with Germany had already came to an end due to the strength of the allies, but Japan wouldn’t give up. War with Japan drug on, even though Japan was outnumbered. This proved that a bloody end was the only route to take. America understood that the country with the highest amount of technological warfare and least casualties was going to win. The whole war the United States used high tec bombs and planes, but nothing compared to what was to come. The atomic bomb was the way of meeting those needs. The atomic bomb had never and to this day, has never been used in combat (Miner 2-4). The United States felt that Japan brought this upon themselves by bombing Pearl Harbor in 1941, bringing us into World War II, and not giving up (Garner 4). When deciding where to drop the bomb, it was obvious that Hiroshima was a key place. Being flat, the bomb radiation would spread causing more damage (Stover 4). Also, Hiroshima was a Japanese army based, so if this didn’t cause the end of the war, many of the enemy's supplies would be ruined. (Garner 4). Three days after the bombing another atomic bomb was dropped on another Japanese town, Nagasaki. This bomb was a lot less famous as Hiroshima, but it was also very destructive and deadly. No one would ever imagined the extent of these awful weapons. The Manhattan Project, was the name given to attentive project by the head scientist on the project, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. Planning the bomb took many minds and much time. The United States spent two years and two billion dollars building this destructive device all in secret. The building of the bomb started before Germany agreed to peace, so at the time the United States didn’t know
The atomic bomb was powerful enough that one of them could cause devastating threats and end the war. Two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in August 1945. These atomic bombs took away the lives of all 20 million people at one time, and Japan immediately declared surrender in August 15th. During the Second World War, in May 1945, Germany surrendered to the Allies, and the battle is over. But, Japan had showed no signs of surrender to the Allies in the fight against the Philippines. Thus, President of United States decided to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima to beat the Japan. (854, 863-864,
The Manhattan Project was a secret problem barely anyone knew about. Many of the scientists that were involved with the Manhattan Project heard about the Axis powers gaining knowledge of how to make nuclear weapons that could destroy a whole nation. The Manhattan Project produced two atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan. The atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Hiroshima was chosen as the target for the first atomic bomb because it was a large port city with an army base. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki missed its target by over a mile.
The politics and strategic side of this bombing story had just as much turmoil and drama as the actual bombing itself. When America was making its atomic bomb, other countries like Great Britain, Germany, and Russia also had the idea to create an atomic bomb. However, the U.S. was the only county to make them because they had the manpower and resources to make these bombs. Like mentioned before, some government officials, including President Truman, believed that dropping the bomb was not a bad idea. These people thought it was beneficial to drop the first bomb for both Japan and the U.S.. They believed this because the U.S. had planned an invasion of another Japanese island, and if the
The atomic bomb was seen as a weapon capable of ending the war, and it did just that. Due to its quick and magnificent destruction capabilities, the United States could avoid hand to hand combat and save the lives of many Americans. On the other hand, the bombs were seen as unnecessarily brutal. Because of its lethal range, hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed.
On the 8th of December 1941, the United States congress declared war on the empire of japan in response to that country’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor the prior day. It was formulated an hour after the infamy speech of US President Roosevelt. Following the declaration, Japan’s allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States, bringing the United States fully into World War II. When the Allied forces finally got to the point where an invasion on the Japanese mainland was inevitable, it was decided to use the Atomic weapons due to the fact that Japanese leaders had convinced their people to fight the death against “the foreign invaders”. Faced with the prospect of an invasion that could easily cost millions of lives on both sides, the US decided to drop the big ones and hopefully end the war with relatively few lives lost. They chose to target Hiroshima and Nagasaki because of their strategic importance to the empire. Both were military ports used to supply the armed forces of Japan and were filled with military supplies. So the bombs were dropped to end the war, not in revenge of Pearl
In World War II, Japan has been one of the biggest threat to the Allies. As the war goes on, the atomic bomb has been discovered and the U.S decided to bomb it surprisingly in Hiroshima, Japan, that had been one of Japan’s largest cities during late 1600’s. It became a horrible situation to the people who got bomb on August 6, 1945. America stated that they have a lot of reasons on why did they dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, like to save more of their people and lessen their casualties, to make Japan surrender as quickly as possible and according to President Truman, the main reason of it was to end World War II. Others were not convinced with their reasons and said that the bomb has been dropped on Hiroshima because America wanted to see how
First of all, the dropping of the atomic bomb caused the Japanese to surrender and leading to the end of the war. For the reason that, after the first bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, yet Japan did not want to surrender. The Japanese empire surrender after that second atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. According to Harrys S Truman’s Decision “One week later, on August 14, 1945, after the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, the Japanese surrendered” . The results of the significant and brave decision that President Truman made; put a stop to many issues that may had occurred during the WWII. Nevertheless, the usage of the second atomic bomb made the Japanese realize that the United States had created a powerful weapon, and lead to their surrender. Second of all, the atomic bomb was the most proper manner in avoiding a Japanese invasion. The United States was mostly concern on an unexpected invasion or attack from Japan, such as the attack on Pearl Harbor. According to the article History, President Roosevelt commented “I believe I interpret the will of the congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” Moreover, the unexpected attack on Pearl Harbor is a perfect example of the damages that they
Imagine you are standing in a city in Japan overlooking Hiroshima. Smoke in the distance and everyone frightened at the scene. Buildings collapse by the dozen and people rushing to their houses. You get inside and check the news Hiroshima was bombed. In 1945 the U.S. dropped 2 bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to stop Japan. The bombing of Hiroshima made an important impact on our history and culture.
At the time of the United States decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, World War II had been waging for six years. Both Japan and the US had lost tons of supplies and resources, millions of dollars, and thousands of troops. The decision that finally ended the war was taken by the U.S on August 6, 1945, when the American bomber Enola Gay dropped the very first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, and Japan finally surrendered. However, Japan's surrender was not the intent of the United States when dropping these bombs- this was a diplomatic measure taken by the government to warn the Soviet Union against their growing influence in Europe. Dropping the atomic bombs was an unnecessary decision which cost the lives of over 300,000 innocent people and has detrimentally affected the health of generations to come.
America should not have dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima because the bomb had killed millions of innocent Japanese civilians and just instantly turned them into ash, only a shadow was left of them. If children had went into bomb shelters and survived, they would not live for long because of the radiation scattered throughout the blast radius. Radiation scattered throughout Hiroshima will kill a further billion as a result. Also, they would be made orphans because their parents have been turned into nothing. The atomic bomb was very harsh, flattening all property in blast radius and people will be burnt alive. Japan was already seeking peace to many countries and more than 60 of its cities had been destroyed by conventional bombing, the home islands were being blockaded by the American navy, and the USSR entered the war in Asia by attacking Japanese troops occupying Manchuria. American refusal to modify its “unconditional surrender” demand made the Japanese even put up more resistance. If America demonstrated an explosion over Tokyo harbor would have convinced Japan’s leaders to quit without killing many people and cause them to suffer immense pain. The bomb was very expensive to make and develop. It used 2 billion US dollars to invent and make the atomic bomb. The conventional firebombing would have
The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The bomb was used to end the war 6 months earlier than the war would have ended naturally. If the bomb was never dropped then the United States would have invaded japan and lost up to 1,000,000 soldiers in the battle (source 8). The United States should not have dropped the bomb because it killed more innocent people than it did threats to the country. The bomb had a blast radius of over 2,000 yards. This bomb disintegrated anything that was 1 mile within ground zero which was the drop site of the bomb.
There was also the question of time. The atomic bomb was by far the quickest way that America could see for the ending of the war, and they were eager to end the war as before long, Russia would become involved making a heavier casualty rate inevitable. America were also a very powerful country now they had the development of the Atomic Bomb, it would have been a waste to not be able to show their true power and the true destruction they could use through the bomb. There is also the point that the Americans were looking for revenge against the Japanese, as they had injured and killed many American soldiers, and even more to come, had the Americans not taken quick action.
Even though there are many statistics and other information to backup that the bombs were necessary to end the war in a timely manner, it is important to understand the emotions of people at the time. Fear ran strong throughout the country following Pearl Harbor, the first attack on American soil. The Americans had won the war against Germany and the country was growing anxious for the end of the war. The men would have been deployed and fighting for years, many had died in the war against Germany and many more were dying fighting Japan. The war against Japan was drawn out because the americans had to island hop to get to the mainland. On the islands it was guerilla warfare. Many innocent Japanese citizens would die from dropping the atomic bombs, and result in many more casualties than the attack on Pearl Harbor. But the United States was fighting all the citizens of Japan. This is shown by the kamikazes particularly in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa and the citizen suicides on the island of Saipan. Before the kamikazes were officially a special force, the Japanese airmen were taught that if their airplane was damage to inflict as
August 6th 1945, the United States dropped the first of two atomic bombs on Hiroshima, Japan. World War Two was practically over, but Japan and the United States weren’t getting along due to Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. The President of the United States (Truman) and U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill Issued the Potsdam Declaration which was the declaration that was put on the table for Japan after Germany had surrendered. Earlier in the war we had been putting together atomic weapons in case the war was getting out of hand. Since Japan wouldn’t surrender after the Potsdam we dropped the 1st bomb. Japan had still not surrendered so we dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. There was a combined total of casualties after the 1st bomb of 140,000. The second bomb totaled out to 120,000 casualties. Dropping these bombs helped the United States win the war. In my Opinion, the decision to drop both bombs on Japan was the best alternative the United States had to remain stable and to hold military lives.
In 1941, The United States began an atomic bomb program called the “Manhattan Project.” The main objective of the “Manhattan Project” was to research and build an atomic bomb before Germany could create and use one against the allied forces during World War II. German scientists had started a similar research program four years before the United States began so the scientists of the “Manhattan Project” felt a sense of urgency throughout their work (Wood “Men … Project”).
