Alfred and James were there for eachother even when there were bumps in the road. In the middle of the story Alfred encounters James at the clubroom, a basement where people go to drink, dance, do drugs, and etc. As I previously mentioned, James is messing with the wrong crew including Major, a tough guy, also known as the leader, Hollis and Sonny, the followers who do what Major tells them to do. Robert shows that these best friends are there for eachother, in the middle of the novel, he says “Hollis pulled a packet of white powder out of his jacket pocket….. ‘No James, you don’t wanna mess with that stuff, you don’t wanna-’ ‘Go ‘way Unca’ Alfid’.... ‘No good James’, mumbled Alfred, feeling the room sway” (Lipsyte 121). In this quote James was going to take cocaine that Hollis had for him. Alfred himself was very intoxicated but nothing could stop him from doing something that had to be done for his best friend James. In the end James did take the drug. Even though Alfred couldn't stop James, he still tried and took his rightful place as James best friend. Like i said, best friends are there for each other through thick and thin, good and
Authors in many instances use the main elements in the story such as setting and narrative to prove a point in the story. For example, writers often use characters, their actions, and their interaction with other characters to support or prove a theme. In the short story “Our Thirteenth Summer”, Barry Callaghan effectively uses characters to develop the theme that childhood is fragile and easily influenced. One of the ways that Callaghan makes effective use of characters to develop the theme is by describing the tension between Bobbie and his parents. This usage of characters supports the theme because Bobbie’s childhood is no longer free to do what he wishes, but has to bow down to his parents’
John Lee Hancock’s film “The Blind Side” describes the struggles of an African American becoming part of a white society. Micheal Or, the main character, shows us the audience how black lower class Americans are mistreated and racism from white individuals. Micheal growing up without a father and with a single mother can also show how generous and sweet he truly is. The so called “gentle giant” being a staggering six foot four inches and three hundred fifteen pounds was everything a college football player should be but with outside help he could put this size to use. Trying to find each meal and a home to stay in every night is when the Tuohy family takes him in and can see him for who he is and not how he is perceived in the community. From there Hancock’s movie shows us how the different issues of a white society such as discrimination for race, and cultural differences can be a false door so to say. Based on character development, a change in society, and plot twist that will leave the viewer wondering what will happen next, The Blind Side is one of the best sports related movies about the struggle of racism.
Randy Pausch. Who is he? What does he stand for? The day he gave the last lecture... His last lecture he only had months to live. He packed a lot of lessons into his lecture. The claims he gave that stood out were to be optimistic, to be determined, and to take risks.
Throughout the book, The Chosen, there are four major qualifying characters for the role of “The Chosen One”. David Malter is the father of Reuven Malter, and is an active Zionist. Reb Saunders is the father of Danny Saunders, and doesn’t talk to his son with the hopes of teaching him compassion. Reuven is Danny’s friend, and is a bridge among all the characters. Danny becomes friends with Reuven after hitting him in the eye with a softball, and also works with David in the library in secrecy. While all these characters have major roles, only one can be crowned with the winning title. Reuven Malter is “the chosen one”. Through the development of the character, Reuven, we see a sheltered young boy learn to find compassion in his heart all
“Everyone in society should be a role model, not only for their own self-respect, but for respect from others.” ~ Barry Bonds. In this world bad situations occur frequently and it takes a good strong person to handle them in a mature way. Dealing with them this way not only shows that the person has self-control, but also makes them a good role model for people to look up to. In the book The Chosen, Chaim Potok uses Mr. Galanter to express his opinions of a good role model. Acting as a baseball coach and gym teacher, young boys look to him for guidance and motivation every day. Having this kind of position causes stress at times, and requires him to stay calm and level headed. Throughout this book, Mr. Galanter
“College is the reward for surviving high school.” In the novel The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, Holling’s dad does not let Heather, who is Holling’s sister, go to Columbia University in New York. I think this is because he wants Heather to stay living as a family. I also think Holling’s dad hates college. He thinks that college is so stupid, and you just finish high school, and go on in life. I think Heather’s gonna sneakily go to college without her dad knowing.
“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure” (57). Two men that lived for their passion for adventure was Chris McCandless and Jay Moriarity. Chris McCandless was a young man who hitched hike to Alaska to explore and survive in the wilderness. Jay Moriarity was a young surfer who was determined to ride Mavericks, the largest waves. Chris's story was heard by a man named Jon Krakauer and Chris's story was developed and published into a novel for the world to hear, which got controversial feedback. Although both seem to come from very different lifestyles and had different pursuits for adventure, both share many qualities such as home life, preparation for goals, and the willingness to let people be there for them.
Johnny Cade is "the gang's pet." The novel describes Johnny as a "lost puppy" and a "puppy that has been kicked too many times." He is only 16 years old, but has already been beaten down by the cruelty of life. Johnny had been severely beaten by a group of Socs before this story begins. This beating puts him almost over the edge; in fact, the Socs scared him so much that he even carries a switchblade in his pocket. The author, Tim O’brien of the book The Things They Carried uses events and characters from the memoir in place of some experiences him and the narrator shares. Fictionalizing many emotions and events that happened to Tim through other characters usually that he wouldn’t feel or do. For example Tim talks about how at a point he wanted to run away to canada when he received his draft notice. This feeling of discontent and the thought of war sickened him to the point he was just yards away from Canada but felt as though that would be a coward move. The author and character shared similar ideas however the author Tim didn’t attempt to run away but his character did. O’Brien informs his audience on the difference of the war from the stereotypical
Some people are fierce competitors, and some people are not. If you are a fierce competitor then you should like this story. The lovely story “Raymond’s Run“ written by Toni Cade Bambara is inspiring. The two characters I will be talking about are Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker (but they call her Squeaky), and Gretchen Lewis. They both are great at running. “Cause she is good no doubt about it.” (Bambra, 32) “ As anybody can tell you, I’m the fastest thing on two feet.” (Bambra, 23) Also they both take pride in their performance on the track. “ I’m the swiftest in the neighborhood, and everybody knows that.” (Bambra, 23) “ I’m going to win this time, and everybody knows it.” (Bambra, 26) Squeaky and Gretchen are both fierce, fast, strong competitors.
Chris (Alex) McCandless a wise, well educated and determined young man. Not your typical young man, some say he’s crazy while others admire him, Chris is self reliant and an extraordinary young man. I wouldn’t follow in Chris’s footsteps but he’s a go getter. Despite all the “craziness” Chris did he had a tough time grasping everything that happened at home and never could he be around someone for a long period of time he wanted everything he did done his way. Some may believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to escape a toxic relationship with his parents, but it is more than that, his rebelliousness, risk taking tendencies and family problems led him into the wild.

When Booker arrived back at Tom’s apartment, he was surprised to find the young officer still dressed in a pair of boxers, the only addition to his attire, a pale blue blanket draped over his shoulders. The soft woolen rug conveniently hid the scars on his arms, but it somehow added to the helplessness of his already forlorn persona. Upon closer scrutiny, Booker noticed how incredibly tired his friend looked. The overhead light accentuated the black smudges under his eyes, and stress lines creased his forehead, marring his usually smooth complexion. A shiver of guilt ran down the dark-haired officer’s spine. No matter how he tried to rationalize it to himself, he had abandoned Tom in his hour of need. However, he also felt somewhat justified in doing so. But whether Tom would see it that way remained to be seen, all he could do was try to explain his
Author of A Dictionary of the English Language, Dr. Samuel Johnson once said the following, “Don’t, Sir, accustom yourself to use big words for little matters.” In a movie about a passionate professor and his debate team, words are not hard to come by. Yet despite the number of speeches that characters in Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters may recite, there are some that are more impactful than others. A beautifully written script knows when and how to shock an audience, it knows how to develop character using dialogue, and it knows how to do this efficiently. Based on a true story, The Great Debaters explores race relations in the United States and how men and women of all ages were influenced by the early 1900’s political climate. In difficult times, one’s true colors are revealed, and as this film’s characters face one of the darkest times of America’s history, words -when used wisely- can demonstrate a strong sense of strength and a strong sense of character.
