The Crucible is a play by Arthur Williams which was first produced in 1953. The author of the play utilizes different characters to discuss issues in the society. Abigail Williams bears most of the responsibility in the play – especially in Act 1. The author develops her character to portray deception. Her actions are meant to deceive others to fulfill her selfish gains. However, despite the fact that her actions cause pain and suffering to others in the society, she is not punished. Instead, those that she accuses wrongly end up being punished. Abigail should be tried and punished for her crimes due to the pain and suffering she inflicts on other characters in the play as well as causing chaos and hysteria in the society. Using pathos to explain why Abigail should be punished, the reader should consider the fallout that happens from Abigail's actions. Her actions cause rampant paranoia and fear which leads to the death of other characters in the play. For example, Rebecca, an innocent, religious woman is put to death after accusations by Abigail. After she is accused of witchcraft by Abigail, she is arrested and convicted. Even though Reverend Hale, an “expert” on witchcraft, pauses and reconsiders whether the cases against her and others is fair and just, ultimately the accusations and paranoia prevail. Reverend Hale attempts to bring some common sense into the proceedings and implores Governor Danforth to reconsider the accusations, “I have this morning signed away
To further illustrate the appeal to a reader’s pathos Miller writes, “I have been near to murdered everyday because I done my duty pointing out the Devil's people-and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a-“ (108). When Abigail mentions she has suffered tremendously for her statements, even Mr. Danforth (a judge in the play) experiences sorrow for Abigail. Considering that a court official felt sympathetic towards Abigail, further elaborates on the fact that she uses her misleading appearance to exploit the hysterical town of Salem. With the assistance of her past experiences, and current ones, Abigail Williams is able to distress the other villagers and intensify their hysteric views.

During the events of the Crucible, morals were tested, as were peoples’ willingness to face these tests. In terms of characters passing and failing, two notable individuals come to mind. Tituba and Rebecca Nurse were both tested mentally and spiritually, and felt the full effect of their choices. Rebecca died by keeping to her Christian faith, as Tituba lived by lying in attempts to prove her innocence. Both women faced Crucibles, yet which one passed, and which one failed?
There are many themes that portray parts in "The Crucible". Some of the themes are society, religion, magic, and personal integrity. The themes will help you to understand the characters and who they are as people. “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” Donald J. Trump, December 7, 2015 (CNN.) America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. A place believed and expected to be where all are welcome. All people, no matter what their beliefs, race, background, etc., are able to live happily in this founded country. They’re able to live out their beliefs and freely be who they are, without being afraid of being judged or persecuted in doing so. Sadly, this is no longer the case for all people, and it’s very clear that there are distinct similarities with this and the novel, “The Crucible,” we read based on the persecution of those who were accused of witchcraft back in 1692.
During the 1690’s people had to suffer through accusations of witchcraft; during the 1950’s Americans had to endure the McCarthy Era. Despite the time difference, both correlate. The Salem witch trials are hearings that were conducted in several towns in the Province of Massachusetts with little or no proof. McCarthyism is the claims of treason without proper evidence. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller creates a story about McCarthyism, Puritan lifestyle, and witchcraft that can only exist with the historical time period of 1690’s.
Do any of the five possible exceptions to truth telling discussed in this chapter justify Elmer's strategy?
Dramatization, an action in which language is seen as a mode of symbolic act rather than a mode of knowledge, was my primary drawback. I have always been a quite person and performing on stage has been my frail point, but nonetheless I chose to perform on stage casing my fears inside and performing in Authur Miller's The Crucible. As I commenced my drive, with frustration and aggravation, I began to make it my aim to advance in my shortcoming, dramatization. Ultimately we reached a point where success was within our reach, at the night of the performance. This brought me satisfaction and fulfillment for my endeavor in the play.
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, is a tragic play with a significant message that is carried out through the actions and behaviors of a variety of characters ranging from heroic martyrs to malicious calumniators. On the side of the victimized heroes there are over two dozen innocent people who were put to death. Some of these wrongfully killed characters are principals in the play, such as John and Elizabeth Proctor. Conversely, on the malevolent, pernicious side of the story there is a group of people determined to destroy or take the lives of others. Anew, some of those malignant characters are principals in the play. The quintessence of these abhorrent characters is Abigail Williams. The most despicable character in The Crucible, is Abigail, who is Miller’s embodiment of greed and selfishness; Abigail’s behaviors throughout the play such as being unremorseful and defiant make her the most detrimental character Miller conjured.

This partially fictionalized playwright takes place in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony and follows the progression of the Salem witch trials that occurred during 1692. The character’s relationships explore the themes of pride, justice, and vengeance. Arthur Miller wrote the play as an analogy for McCarthyism. During the McCarthy era, Miller was wrongly accused and convicted for being a Communist, so he wrote The Crucible to compare the persecution of witches to the persecution of Communists. Throughout the play many characters can be perceived of being manipulative because they find ways to influence a person or situation. Abigail Williams is the most manipulative character in The Crucible because she is selfish, wicked, and bold.

In the society that people live in, there are many among whom are despicable and there are also those who have morality. The Crucible is a play that takes place in Massachusetts in the spring of 1962; based on the true story of the Salem Witch trials, where many of the people in the town of Salem turned against each other because of their belief of witchcraft. Since Salem was deeply religious and believed in the words of the Almighty God, most of the people considered witchcraft as evil. Similar to the characters by Miller, his characters reflects on Kohlberg’s stages of development; for example in stage one of development, “We obey authority figures in order to avoid punishment” (Kohlberg), that reflects on the ideals of the people of Salem against their religion which they take very seriously. They must obey God and go to church every Sunday in order to go to Heaven rather than Hell. One character that the author introduces in the play is Abigail Williams, a young teenage girl that once held responsible for the well-being of a group of other innocent and naive girls in Salem but certain unforgivable acts caused her to become a cheater, and a liar. In the play, The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, the most vice character is Abigail Williams because she stole all the money of Reverend Parris, she had a love relationship with John Proctor, and she lied about many things just to get away to protect herself.
The Salem Witch Trials took place from February 1692 to May 1693. Nearly 300 years after the trials, author Arthur Miller decided to write a play based off of the Salem Witch Trials due to the Red Scare in the 1950’s that he was experiencing. Arthur Miller relates the Communist hunt to the Salem Witch Trials even though they were nearly 300 years apart because of the accusations happening with such illogical evidence. The characters of “The Crucible” play the roles of important people during both major events, for example, Abigail Williams signifies Senator Joseph P. McCarthy as they were both the epicenter of the accusations. In the play, Abigail is caught doing witchery and dancing, which is against the rules of their village, and tries to escape her consequences. In “The Crucible”, written in 1953 by Arthur Miller, the main character, Abigail Williams, reveals her true nature of being cowardly when she does not have the courage to deal with her wrongdoings.
