The Crucible is a play by Arthur Williams which was first produced in 1953. The author of the play utilizes different characters to discuss issues in the society. Abigail Williams bears most of the responsibility in the play – especially in Act 1. The author develops her character to portray deception. Her actions are meant to deceive others to fulfill her selfish gains. However, despite the fact that her actions cause pain and suffering to others in the society, she is not punished. Instead, those that she accuses wrongly end up being punished. Abigail should be tried and punished for her crimes due to the pain and suffering she inflicts on other characters in the play as well as causing chaos and hysteria in the society. Using pathos to explain why Abigail should be punished, the reader should consider the fallout that happens from Abigail's actions. Her actions cause rampant paranoia and fear which leads to the death of other characters in the play. For example, Rebecca, an innocent, religious woman is put to death after accusations by Abigail. After she is accused of witchcraft by Abigail, she is arrested and convicted. Even though Reverend Hale, an “expert” on witchcraft, pauses and reconsiders whether the cases against her and others is fair and just, ultimately the accusations and paranoia prevail. Reverend Hale attempts to bring some common sense into the proceedings and implores Governor Danforth to reconsider the accusations, “I have this morning signed away
