The Crucible Moral

In this essay I will talk about two main central ideas. First, some people accuse innocent people for witchery. Secondly, there is a lot of hatred in the town of Salem.

What is a moral dilemma? A moral dilemma is a man versus self conflict. It is when a character has to perform two different actions, but they can not perform both actions because it is not possible. Authors use moral dilemmas in their writings to retain the reader’s interest in the book or play and to have the reader ask questions. People often face many life altering choices such as right versus wrong or good versus bad. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor chooses to die because he does not want to blacken his name throughout Salem and to ruin his sons’ names when they grow up.

“The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself” (Addams). Immorality is a very subjective concept, but sometimes it is undeniable. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Abigail Williams is shown to be the most immoral character through her constant disregard of others throughout the different events of the story, furthering the point that when in fearful situations people will only think about themselves.

Religion influenced peoples actions and dominated societal norms. Rules set out by the Bible had to be followed because anyone who breaks it gets sentenced to death. When the threat of witchcraft hit the town, mass hysteria questioned peoples character and integrity. The stories are chronicled in Arthur Miller’s book, The Crucible. Marry Warren is introduced as a moral ambiguous character because of her altered involvement in Elizabeth Proctors trial. “The Crucible” is a play that takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The play starts in the woods, the characters Abigail, Betty, Tituba, Mary Warren, and Mercy Lewis were casting spells in the forest. Samuel Parris catches them in the woods and Betty passes out. They go to the Proctors house to make sure Betty is okay. Parris is contemplating on what the town will think of him when they find out what has happened. He tells Abigail to tell him what happened in the woods. Abigail tells him they were dancing.

The tragic events of the Salem witch trials tested the morality of several individuals, who abided to a government based on religious intolerance and limitation. Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” highlights the detrimental effects of the religious court, and the impact Puritan societal norms had on its citizens. Reverend Hale, a protagonist in the play serves as a balance between morality versus and the religious conformity that took place within society. His transformation throughout the play demonstrates his true intention in doing what is right and abiding by the correct ideals, instead of following the damaging priorities enrooted in the theocratic system. Throughout “The Crucible,” Reverend Hale transfers from adhering to a theocracy to prioritizing the true value of life, revealing his maintenance of a strong moral code.

This effect trickle down to the woman in the village, whom all she had known to do all her life is to combine many things together at the same time, like carrying a breastfeeding baby on her laps, using one hand to blow the fire she created with woods which she is using to cook for her family, using the other hand to stir the cassava flour on fire, and at the same time, weaving a basket at intervals. She has it in mind to sell the basket in the market on the next market day. How pathetic it will be for her to go through all that stress, and at the end of the day she loses the profits to a hooligan who was actually turned a hooligan by the youth unemployment crisis. At the other extreme, a rich man in the city gets a large amount of money from a contract and could not deposit it in the bank that day because the money came late and banks had closed for the day. He prayerfully takes the money home to deposit it first thing the following morning. That same night, “Mr. Smart Guy” comes with a “team” of others to rob the rich man of his money. At the same time, in between the two extremes, lies the average civil servant who stays at home one evening with his family watching a family programme on TV. The entire neighbourhood was actually dark due to power outage. The family only had an exclusive interest in the programme and managed to put on their generating set in order not to miss the program. This was around 8.00pm.

Not knowing what to do is the worst kind of suffering. The characters in The Crucible suffer as they struggle to make the right decision. The Crucible, a play about the Salem witch trials in 1693 by Arthur Miller, highlights how being motivated or tempted by wrong deeds cost people’s life. Each character falls in different stages of Lawrence Kohlberg’s stages of moral development. Kohlberg is an American psychologist best known for his theory of Stages of Moral Development. Abigail makes a bad moral decision because she accuses people of witchcraft in order to satisfy her needs and to get John Proctor’s love. Reverend Hale makes a bad moral decision because he is a spirit doctor, who fails to identify which story was real or fake. He moves

The burning Crucible crowns those who firmly withstand the trial of faith even when the fatal fire is imminent. Though those who remain faithful to God die, they are martyrs who will be honored for their integrity forever; though those who succumb to the devil live, they are cowards who will be condemned for their treachery forever, which is indicated in the Old Testament, “Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds!” (Micah 2:1). In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams yields to the temptations of the devil and uses the idea of virtue and piety to advance a selfish and malevolent agenda by: pretending to be an upright Christian, destroying the person that she loves the most, and prosecuting her companion on witchcraft.
