In today’s world nothing is more important than the gadgets we use on a every day to day basis. What we take for granted sometimes is the thing we use most and most importantly we use to charge everything most of the time is some type of electricity. I hope to provide a clear and concise paper that details and gives the cultural impact of electricity and the world we live. This paper will hit on three topics reconstruction to the beginning of where man first began to harness electricity, how man used this electricity to change the course of history as we know it, and the positives as well as the negatives of electricity and the world we live in.
Electricity is a form of energy involving the flow of electrons. All matter is made up of atoms, and an atom has a center, called a nucleus. The nucleus contains positively charged particles called protons and uncharged particles called neutrons (Joseph, 2002)The nucleus of an atom is surrounded by negatively charged particles called electrons. The negative charge of an electron is equal to the positive charge of a proton, and the number of electrons in an atom is usually equal to the number of protons (Joseph, 2002).When the balancing force between protons and electrons is upset by an outside force, an atom may gain or lose an electron. When electrons are "lost" from an atom, the free movement of these electrons constitutes an electric current (Joseph, 2002). To understand electricity one must know that it is not an invention but a
In the first couple of words it says “An electric current is a flow of electric charge”. In the first sentence it already gets in to talking about electric currents and how they flow through an electric charge. In the first sentence in Energy Story it talks about how “Electricity figures everywhere in our lives”. Both the articles get right in about talking about electricity. In the first seconds of the video she talks about her belief in education and how she found a way to make electricity out of homemade playdough or store-bought play dough. My conclusion is to think of what is around
In modern day society , students are on instagram instead of taking notes in class, office workers shop on ebay at work and parents take their iphones to the beach instead of the books they used to to read. Maggies Jackson , a writer for Boston Globe states electronics are less of annoyances , yet becoming more of a distraction leading to a new dark age. Jackson uses personal stories and tells of her extensive research in the article to make her readers believe in her credibility. These three rhetorical appeals combining with her alarmed tone creates an effective argument on electric distranticon.
To understand how this electricity works we must start with the basics. The atom is the smallest unit of matter, consisting of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons have a negative charge. Electric charges that are the same repel each other and charges that are different attract each other. Electric charges can exist alone, unlike magnetic poles.
Today, most people take electricity for granted, especially in the United States and other developed countries of the world. According to Walter Moss in his book, An Age of Progress?, Clashing Twentieth-Century Global Forces, during the twentieth century, perhaps no other technological advancement, even the automobile, affected the people of the world more than electricity. Electricity would become the foundation for the development of new technological advancements in industries such as agriculture, health and science, environment, and technology. Production and consumption in all these industries would continue to rise throughout the century with reliance on electricity to flourish.
The title of this story leads the readers to various interpretations about the content. It is possible for some readers to expect that this story is about a remarkable historic event involving electricity, and some might think of a scientific explanation of electricity if they read the title literally. Even some others might believe that the word ‘electrical’ symbolizes something else.
To make electricity it needs to have an equal amount of positive and negative ions. If it does not have an equal amount of ions it will be unstable and not balanced. All matter is made up of atoms, and atoms are made up of smaller particles. The three main particles making up an atom are the proton, the neutron, and the electron.
The basis of modern day electrical systems were all derived over a quarrel involving the light bulb, the electric chair, and a 28-year old Croatian immigrant. This dispute involved three of the biggest and most prominent names in the history of electrical engineering: Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and George Westinghouse, who were all scientists and innovators who lived during the late 1800s. Edison and Tesla would get into a quite large argument over the best and most efficient kind of electrical currents. It would be Edison’s direct currents against Tesla’s alternating ones. This disagreement would go on to shape the course of electricity across the country. It would later be known as the War of Currents. The War of Currents had a great impact
Have you ever wondered what life would be without the invention of electricity Ben Franklin was able to change history by becoming one of the pioneers of numerous invention. One of Ben Franklin famous quotes is “ Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing”.
I know this because in the article it directly say’s “But what is electricity? Where does it come from? How does it work?”. The article begins talking about how energy works, what it is, and where it comes from by explaining what atoms are. It talks about how they are made up of three main particles, protons, neutrons, and electrons. Lastly, it talks about how atoms have a positive and negative charge and also what atoms can pass through.
Atoms are made of three parts, protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are pieces of matter that is positively charged (+1). Electrons are really small, smaller than protons, piece of matter with a negative charge(-1). Neutrons are pieces of matter around the same size as protons with no charge(0). Atoms are usually surrounded by electrons. When the electron and protons are at the same amount the net charge is zero. When the number of electrons and protons are not equal it causes the atoms to be ionized. These atoms are called ions. More electrons over protons are negatively charged. More protons over electrons are positive charged. The total charge would be the sum of the positive protons and negative electrons. The number of protons defines
Obviously without electricity, you wouldn't be able to enjoy your daily explorations of the Day! What a horrible thought! But don't worry. Electricity does exist and it allows us to enjoy life in so many ways. Since electricity is a natural force that exists in our world, it didn't have to be invented. It did, however, have to be discovered and understood. Most people give credit to Benjamin Franklin for discovering electricity. Benjamin Franklin had one of the greatest scientific minds of his time. He was interested in many areas of science, made many discoveries, and invented many things, including bifocal glasses. In the mid-1700s, he became interested in electricity. Up until that time, scientists had mainly known about and experimented with static
In the article “energy story” it talks about all the importance of electrity and how it is made. It informs you about the different number of protons electrons and neutrons that are used to make electricity. We use electricity for everything in the
In the story “Energy Story”, it talks about what electricity is and how it can be created. It tells you about how protons, electrons, and neutrons interact with each other to make electricity. The story gives you examples of electricity that affects your everyday life, for example, electricity, lights up our homes, and cooks our food, etc.
In the present generation, almost every devices run through batteries. Batteries are a collection of cells where their chemical reactions create a flow of electricity in a circuit. Every battery consists of three essential components, which are an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte that chemically reacts with the other two components. In the 17th and 18th century, electricity was just a curiosity, but as time passed by, it became one of the most important and required tools. For instance, any kind of remotes in order to have an access to any kind of devices requires batteries. Alessandro Volta was the one to make the crucial invention that caused the transformation in our lives. Our lives wouldn’t be like now, with no laptops, phones, and
The outer shell of electrons that orbit the nucleus of an atom is called the valance shell. This is what makes a copper atom conduct. For a copper atom the number of electrons is one. When a charge of electricity is placed in the end of a wire the electrons move into the wire. Since there is only one electron in the valance shell of a copper atom it can be easily dislodged with a small amount of energy causing it to jump to the next atom. This will then cause the valance electron of that atom to jump to the next atom and so forth. This movement happens very fast making it possible for a large number of electrons to move through the wire. An example of a conductive atom is shown figure 1.
