Church and Culture The cultural landscape is constantly bringing about new challenges that the church must address in order to reach the world for Christ. Each of these new challenges requires the church to evaluate their approach and adjust to reach the world without compromising their mission and values. The church must decide what is unchanging and what can change in relation to culture, not everything is relative to our environment.
Relativism
“Moral relativism of the cultural, as opposed to individual or personal, variety is commonly understood as the view that the truth or justification of moral claims and values can only be judged in relations to the moral code of the culture in which they occur (Sikka, 2012).” Morality is based on culture and according to Sikka, culture is swayed by the elite seeking their own benefit (2012). The elite convince enough people in their culture to believe a specific way to make something moral or immoral. It only takes a few loud voices to start the charge and the majority seems to follow. Our government is an example of this, some officials in the state of Colorado decided to legalize marijuana. Now, if you life in Colorado you have different rights than if you lived in a different culture. These different morals and cultures are in every state creating an environment with no absolutes.
