In the 20th century, China was trying to establish itself as a powerful nation in the world. After the Great Leap Forward, which turned out to be a failure. The Great Leap Forward resulted in the deaths of millions of Chinese citizens. After the Great Leap Forward, Mao Zedong pursued another movement called the Cultural Revolution. “The Cultural Revolution was initiated by Mao Zedong in May 1966 with the objective to purge capitalist roaders… and counter-revolution-arise from Chinese Society” (Asadul Islam, Paul Raschky, and Russle Smyth). The Cultural Revolution was a movement to eliminate any persons who was thought of as a threat to Mao Zedong’s authority in China. The Cultural Revolution resulted in the imprisonment of people who committed “crimes against the state”. The Cultural Revolution formed the “Red Guard” which was made out of young Chinese citizens. Along with the “Red Guard” another group called the “Gang of Four” was formed and the leader was Mao Zedong’s wife, Jiang Qing. “The Gang of Four and its allies inflicted physical and emotional damage that still reverberates in Chinese society” (McDonald). China during the Cultural Revolution, China was a political war field which resulted in chaos in the Chinese political system. The Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution was a period of experimentation while also trying to make changes to Chinese society.
