In 2008, David Fincher made a movie adapted from the short story “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Both the movie and the book follow the life of the main character Benjamin Button. The theme of the story remains the same; man who is born old and ages backwards. The movie differs from the short story immensely because Benjamin is introduced differently, has a different love interest and a different child.
In my opinion the birth of Benjamin Button is the most important difference in the story.
In the short story Benjamin is born differently than in the movie. For example, in the book Benjamin is born a talking old man, while in the movie Benjamin is first seen as a crying elderly baby. Although it's odd for Benjamin to both start and end his journey as a baby, I feel it was a better change to the story to have him born as a baby instead of an old man because it is more realistic.

For example, in the short story Benjamin falls in love with a girl named Hildergarde, they soon become husband and wife after meeting but are driven apart when Benjamin's age gets in the way. While in the movie Benjamin ends up falling for a girl named Daisy whom he never marries due to him growing younger and her older. I think that changing his love interest was important for the movie because it was dramatic seeing the struggles Benjamin and Daisy were faced with. Although he never married Daisy I feel there love was more evident then in Benjamin's relationship with
One of the differences that were most important was Johnny’s hand. Johnny’s crippled hand changed his life and made him look for another job. Johnny’s hand still gets crippled and then fixed in both the book and the movie, but in different ways. The book tells that Johnny’s crippled hand was caused by Dove, one of the apprentices with Johnny in the book . The book says that Dove gives Johnny a cracked crucible for Johnny to look at. Johnny reaches for the cracked crucible before it falls as it pours the liquid metal on his hand and makes it crippled. The movie shows Mrs. Lapham bumping into Johnny before he falls and his hand falls into the liquid metal. The movie didn’t include Dove, who gave Johnny the cracked crucible which made Johnny’s hand
As Benjamin transition out of adolescent, he constantly struggles with the decision regarding his future and to find the best way of becoming a man. Ironically, it is his relationship with Mrs. Robinson that helps Benjamin transformation
Normally, when a movie is made about a story in a book the two stories are not exactly the same. The movie is adjusted by adding small details or leaving out some parts in order to make the story more
The characters are totally different in the two versions. The short story’s main characters are a family; a husband, a wife, and two children. The film’s characters are a woman and a man, and the man’s mother and younger sister.
Both share the same plot, and there are very little differences between the two. These are a few of the differences that I was able to notice between the book and the movie. There are several others throughout the story, but they are all just as minute and in the end they have no effect on the outcome of the story. Overall, I was very impressed with the movie and it was very true to the book. I have seen my share of movies that were adaptations from books that did not do the book justice, but this one is almost exactly like the book, so it was very
The “Patriot” takes place in South Carolina in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It is a story about a widowed father of seven, named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin was involved in the French and Indian War before marrying and starting a family. He is reluctant to join the conflict as he remembers too well his own experience in the earlier French and Indian War. After his wife passed away he does everything to keep his family together and away from war. He is a patriot who wants no part in a war with Britain.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button written by Eric Roth and based on a short novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a story of an interesting man who lives his life backwards. The movie takes place in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina and is told in a flashback perspective from the love of Benjamin’s life, Daisy and their daughter, Caroline. I have heard many times throughout my life and nursing career, including from myself, “If I could only go back and know what I know now.” Benjamin Button lived this theory, a theory that seems very similar to the Gerotranscedence theory. Scheidt (2017) states in regards to his own aging “I am dealing with the messages of friends and strangers who make me aware almost daily – most often in a
The novel and the movie share many similarities. The book and the novel share the same problems. A example johnny and pony run away since johnny killed bob.In both johnny gets injured badly and dies.
The book starts in the narrator’s hometown of Woking. While the movie starts in New Jersey. This is a huge change, not only does it affect where the story starts it affects where the characters travel and where they end up. Despite the difference in continents, both protagonists travel virtually the same distance and encounter many of the same things. An example is both characters are attacked trying to cross a river. In the movie this is the Hudson River, but due to the setting of the book it occurs on the River
The actor choices from the film compare to what the book envisioned, but also contrast. The character of Daisy is not similar in the film to what the book
Watching Forrest Gump for the first time I feel that the movie has a little of everything in it, from action and war to love and romance. For one man to overcome so many hardships and live a life full of love and happiness it is inspiring. Each character had something that reached viewers. From Jenny to Lieutenant Dan they all had something that made them easy to connect with. Even the people that sat on the bench next to Forrest created interest; they listened and were in the story for us, but were not truly part of it.
Another difference in the approach of the story is that the family celebrates the father’s promotion before leaving with a huge party in the movie. In the text, the mom is putting on a brave face but it clear that she is not happy about it and neither is Bruno because he questions the mom to the point of anger. These were the only main differences in the approach of the story. The text and film both did a good job in portraying the story but the book was more
Nonetheless, lots of significant scenes from the novel were not obtainable in the film version. Likewise, certain points that made the book very exciting to read, are missing in the movie. The first difference is Madam de Winter relationship between Mrs. Van Hopper training her to be a companion and she pays for her. In the film Madam de Winter is a painter and she labors a servant to Mrs. Van Hopper also, she is a very strict woman due to does not allow to Madam de Winter doing anything before she takes the permission from her. On the other hand, sequences of events, especially in the novel when the Colonel Julyan began the investigation with the rest, he excludes Ben from the investigation, then after a Fevel request from the Colonel Julyan for the investigation into Ben because Fevel thinks Ben Know him but Ben is a foolish and the irresponsible person.
Movies have always found their influences from different sources, but in the case of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” the screen writer found their muse from a short story. The movie and book both roughly stick to the same theme, but many details from the two bulge out with differences. In addition to the many differences between the two, they also share some similarities. Both fictional stories revolve around the unique condition and extraordinary life of a man who ages backwards. “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” the short story and movie are similar and different in many ways.
