In today’s society, music controls the way we live our lives. The influence that music has on society has broadened throughout the years and with social media being one of the world’s top priority, the fan base and spectrum for music in general has expanded significantly. Music is used to express feelings, moods, circumstances, experiences, knowledge, and so much more. With this being the case, the lyrics of any song can be interpreted differently by each and every listener. Many song lyrics give positive messages, promoting well-being, whiles others give negative messages, promoting violence, criminal behaviors, sexual contents, and disrespect towards others. With this being said, music reflects what the public demands, and in many cases the negative messages are often times what sells more than those music giving positive messages.

Music is an art. It is combined in a way to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expressing of emotion; the lyrics help you connect and cope with certain situations you’re experiencing. I chose to analyze the country song, “Good In Goodbye” by Carrie Underwood. Carrie Underwood wrote this song for a past love whom she sees years later outside a restaurant they used to go to and recalls the good in her heartache and pain. This song is very close to my heart, it helped me when I was going through a heartbreak. I now realize why this song’s meaning is worth knowing. Country music’s atmosphere is mostly nostalgic and it always has a great message or a life lesson behind it.

The happiest, most exciting memories I hold on to are often accompanied by a country song, whether it be playing in the background, or roaring over the speakers. Songs are written for people to feel and relate to the emotion the songwriter and singer put behind the lyrics. Growing up having my dad be my role model and most influential person in my life, I often find myself in things that remind me of him or our memories, along with songs that describe a girl who is fearless and lives on the edge at times, as if there are no consequences. For me, this is especially true listening to the song “She Ain’t Right,” by Lee Brice, which highlights my personality and strength I got from my dad, my sense of fearlessness, and my constant seeking out of adventure.

I grew up listening to music everyday not knowing it would save my life in the end... the words that I would listen to would somehow connect with how I was feeling or what I was going through. Music truly soothes the soul and just somehow gives you hope to continue on or to stop something. I think I related my problems to the songs, it would give me comfort knowing I wasn't the only one who was feeling the way I once was. It showed me life was worth living and fighting for.
