A tragedy is an occasion that causes much misfortune and sadness. Tragedy can be seen throughout literature and most likely ends up with someone physically or mentally being killed. A very good example of a tragedy in literature is William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The tale of Romeo and Juliet is about two young lovers that belong to feuding families’ that hate each other and their love must be kept secret. Unfortunately, not but a day after they are secretly wed, they are separated from each other, and later end up killing themselves because they cannot stand living without one another. However, their deaths are not entirely their fault. Friar Lawrence, Romeo, and Juliet were the most guilty characters that contributed to the tragic ending of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence is one of the most guilty characters who contributed in the death of Romeo and Juliet. Not only was he uncautious in wedding Romeo and Juliet, but he devised a flawed and defective plan to keep them together. For example, Friar Lawrence in desperate hope and uncritical thinking wedded Romeo and Juliet in the afternoon of the day after they had met, “Come, come with me, and we will make short work; / For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone / Till holy church incorporate two in one.” (2.6.35-7) If Friar Lawrence had not rushed the marriage and had Romeo and Juliet eloped and instead made the marriage public, maybe the two …show more content…

However, Romeo targeted a beautiful, young girl who did know any better than to be nice and fall for him. If Romeo had not have come on so strong, or if Romeo found another woman rather than Juliet, then Romeo and Juliet may have been able to escape their deaths and fulfill other desires.
