In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare has Friar Lawrence assist in the double suicide of Romeo, as well as Juliet.
The first of many problems that Friar Lawrence creates is when he consents to marry Romeo and Juliet, which ultimately leads to their deaths. Friar Lawrence believes that marrying Romeo and Juliet will end the feud between their two families: “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (II.iii.97-99). Even though Friar Lawrence knows that Romeo and Juliet should not get married, for many different reasons, including Romeo’s obsession with Rosaline not even a day earlier, the Friar decides that this marriage has a small chance of ending the feud, so he goes ahead with it. The Friar had good intentions in the beginning of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship, but his promotion of their secret relationship contributed to the events that all ushered the lovers to their death. He had originally wanted to make Romeo happy and attempt to put an end to the feud. This is true because Friar Lawrence clearly states his intentions in this quote, “For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your household’s rancor to pure love.” (Act 2 Scene 3 Lines 91-92) This shows that his intentions were good in the beginning before everything went downhill, but not everything worked out the way he had planned. He wanted to do everything he possibly could in order to make it that Romeo and Juliet could be together and not have to have any worries. However, the help that he offered both the lovers ended up backfiring in his face with so many problems arising for the plan to be properly executed. His letter never made its way too Romeo which caused the whole plan to fail as a result. Although, the he can be blamed for helping push the lovers in the direction of their doom, but he can’t be completely blamed for the mistake with the letter. If the Friar had not married the couple together, they might have not been so attached to each other and not have wanted to suicide when something bad happened to the other. I believe it’s Friar Lawrence who is the reason they kill themselves because he secretly marries them, fakes Juliet’s death, and didn’t ensure the letter was delivered to Romeo. All of the actions listed is why the young couple eventually killed themselves at the end of the play.
Friar Lawrence should have never married Romeo and Juliet for the reason he did. He only married them to stop the fighting between their families. As the Friar was talking to Romeo he told him that “To turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” (II.iii.90). Friar thought that marrying Romeo and Juliet the hate between the families would stop. Even thought that hatred between the families stopped it was only from loss of both their kids.
An important factor that contributed to Romeo and Juliet’s downfall was Friar Lawrence. Romeo and Juliet thought that they fell in love, but the Friar should have known that they were just kids and they were really rushing into things. One poor decision Friar Laurence makes is to agree to marry the couple in secret. While at first he is optimistic about there pair, thinking it may help unite the two enemies of families. Juliet would tell Romeo about the marriage of with Paris, and how she is going to get out of the marriage with Paris and be with Romeo once again. Juliet tells him how dangerous the plan is to get her out of the marriage how it can go wrong so many ways but she will do it to be with Romeo again. Also how worried she is about the outcome being Juliet could die because she thinks that the poison that Friar Laurence will kill her to get him out of trouble because Friar Laurence is the one who married them, She could not wake up in time for Romeo to see her, but she has faith in Friar Laurence because he has been good so far and if the poison would fail
The Friar helps put the feud at blame, because after meeting only a day ago the two lovers decide to get married. Romeo and Juliet go to the Friar to beg him to marry them. The Friar knows that it is a bad idea, but he agrees to marry them anyone. “For this alliance may so happy prove To turn your households’ rancor to pure love.”(II, iii, 91-92). Friar Lawrence decided to allow the eager couple to get married knowing the consequences that would be likely to occur. The Friar says that marrying the couple might change the minds of the two households to love instead of hatred.
At the end of Act 2, Romeo and Juliet conspire with Friar Lawrence and Juliet’s Nurse to hold a secret wedding in which Romeo will marry Juliet. Romeo first speaks to Juliet in the famous balcony scene, and they agree to get married the next day. The following morning, Romeo goes to consult his close advisor, Friar Lawrence, and asks if he will marry Romeo and Juliet. The Friar is surprised that Romeo has forgotten about Rosaline so quickly, but nonetheless agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet in hopes that it will reconcile the two fighting families. He tells Romeo “this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your household’s rancour into pure love”, and we can see how Friar Lawrence’s reason for conspiring is to mend the two families’ long established
