The development of human being during the entire course of life, focus on biological and psychological growth (Berk, 2010). Human development hold several outcomes that are altered by both positive and negative influences. Genetic (nature) and environmental (nurture) influences place significant impact on human development. In fact, Pinker (2004) submits that behavior is the result of a complex collaboration among inheritance and environmental factors in human development, ultimately supporting that nature-nurture work collectively (Pinker, 2004).
This paper aimed to observed the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through concepts, approaches and theories of development. Hereditary and environmental influences, milestones and the impact of diversity concerning King’s cognitive, physical and social-emotional development is offered. Furthermore, classical and contemporary theories from Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget were applied to analysis King’s life. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development include 4 stages: Sensorimotor period, preoperational period, concrete operational period and formal operations period. Piaget theory offers that a child’s cognitive development encounter these four stages to understand their world independently (Harris, 2005). Contrarily, Vygotsky theory suggest that cognitive development involves children managing challenges through support from adults (Berk, 2010).
