John Dewey was an American philosopher, psychologist, professor, and an activist in several social movements. Dewey influenced almost all branches of philosophy, and he is regarded as one of the 20th Century’s premier philosophers. One of Dewey’s primary field of study was his work in education, he focused on a child-centered democratic approach to schooling and believed in interdisciplinary ideas, valued student input, and recognized the importance of a forward thinking teacher.
Dewey has a particularly interesting understanding of what defines freedom. It is necessary beforehand to understand his idea of social control in an educating environment. Dewey believes that the teacher should be a member of the group, but function as a coach or a referee by teaching students how to interact with each other and form a community. The Dictators Discover Sport’ exhibits a complete lack of freedom, not only do the countries have heavily regulated policies, the way sports is condoned is such that the athletes are worked into the ground, and they are taught to treat sport as a ‘national honour’. The athletes don’t have the time to consider rebelling because they are strong armed into a consistent exercise schedule, and they are unknowingly participating in army training, as they’re being used as an instrument by the dictators. Plato’s ‘Republic Book III’, conversely, describes a society that has regulations on fitness activities but in a contradictory manner, meaning to say that exercise should be limited as strengthening the mind takes precedence.
