The American Dream is heralded and aspired to, by immigrants and natives alike. It is a hopeful belief, that although many believe in, very few achieve. This variability of outcomes is due to the American Dream’s dependency on ideals of equality and freedom of opportunity. These two ideals do not institutionally exist in the United States, causing its construction to be inherently unequal, as individuals cannot reach the Dream without systemic privilege and power. Social positions and historic context, therefore, either obstruct or assist certain groups from attaining or achieving the American Dream. The American Dream
The American Dream is a powerful national ethos. It has been ingrained into American society, and its ideals have permeated through the borders, setting America as a land of dreams and aspirations to other nations. Although it is widely recognized, it can be a vague and unattainable concept, but at its core, it deals with freedom of opportunity, which is the ability to exploit opportunities without barriers. It first came to fruition in Adam’s The Epic of America (1931) in which he states, “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement,” which highlights the need for the ‘land’ to have structures in place that allow for “each man and each woman… to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable… regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.” He then goes on to say that it is not only a dream of upward mobility but also a dream of social order, through which success is solely based on merit rather than the social and structural positions one is born in.
This demonstrates the importance of institutional structures that provide equal opportunities and equal barriers in the meaning of the American Dream.
