The Effects of Bullying
All throughout the world, there are many people being bullied at this very moment. While bullying is considered as a rite of passage to some people, it is becoming more and more harmful and destructive to its many victims. Bullying is known as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance” (“Bullying Definition” 1). This can be seen through both boys and girls, young and old. Bullying has no age limit or quality restriction as who can be identified as a bully or as the victim. It is noted to start somewhere within the pre-school ages and middle school ages, with it occurring to get attention or to express someone’s jealousy of another, but now it has become larger than ever before, and therefore makes it more harmful than ever before. Therefore, bullying has created many side effects, many of which lead on into the victim’s or the bully’s adult life.
Long ago, bullying was referred to being a normal occurrence. People had referred to bullying as “a rite of passage” that everyone went through (“Bullying at School” 2). However, this is no longer the case. Instead, people are slowly starting to notice how bullying has become out of hand and a big problem (2). Bullying is done for many reasons, and such reasons include the bully being jealous, the presence of an imbalance of power (1), or even the bully having problems with home life causing the bully to relieve his
Bullying is a problem that is on the rise in society; however, many individuals have a distorted view of what bullying entails. Usually when someone thinks of bullying, they assume that it is a standard part of a child’s life. This view, on the contrary, is erroneous. Bullying is actually abnormal behavior, many times, leaving victims with a dismantled self identity. Since some people do not understand the consequences of bullying, the actions of the bully often go unnoticed and are perceived as “kids being kids”. The issue of bullying goes deeper than that nevertheless. Despite the erroneous views that many individuals hold towards bullying, it is still a distortion of normal behavior in children.
Bullying is an undesirable form of aggression that is mostly seen in kids of school ages in which one of the parties is less powerful. The aggressive behavior is normally repeated over a period of time. It has the power to have devastating, lasting problems. The purpose of this article is to provide a coherent analysis of the most recent research on bullying and to address the issues that still exist even when school-based programs have been implemented in schools since the 1980s.
Bullying has always been recognized as a normal part of growing up; therefore, most people in the past have not given bullying much thought. Bullying is often thought as “kids being kids” or a “rite of passage,” but it is much more of a problem than just being a kid (Maughan 2). According to the U.S. Deparment of Education, over 13 million students are bullied each year, and over 160,000 students avoid going to school because they are bullied (Maughan 1). Students who feel so threatened by bullying that they do not want to go to school demonstrates just how much bullying can change a child’s life. Bullying is a serious problem, and a child’s life could be dramatically changed by being terrorized at school. (Maughan, 1-2)
At some point in life, each person experiences some type or form of bullying. Bullying has been an issue since the beginning of time but as generations pass and society changes, bullying has become a more serious issue than ever before. Bullying has developed into something so much bigger than anyone ever expected. It leaves people with the questions such as, “What do we do now?” , “Where did things go wrong?”, “How can bullying be prevented?”, “Why did the victims of bullying not tell anyone they were suffering?”, and more.
Bullying has become one of the hottest controversy since the past decade. Bullies are the people who intimidate others because they feel superior from their peers and believe they are higher than anybody else. Moreover, they think that intimidating the people who cannot fight back is funny, but, bullies do not know how the victim’s feeling and how they recover from the pain (“11 Facts”). On the other hand, the victims are the people who are scared to stand up and speak up for themselves. Bullying can be an aggressive behavior that causes harm and distress to others. It can be repeated over time until they feel helpless (Harpaz). It occurs mostly in schools due to imbalance of strength and power. Bullying can have various effects on people’s life due to lower self-confidence, depression, and rebellious act.
Bullying is an aggressive conduct involving the use of unnecessary force or psychological pressure to coerce others. The issue of bullying and its negative consequences continue to create very startling headlines in today’s day and age and within the education sector. Thousands of innocent students wake up afraid to attend school due to the kind of violence they are subjected to by fellow peers. Statistics have proposed that bullying is the worst in UK secondary schools than all other countries in Europe. Nearly half of the students in secondary schools in the UK think that bullying is a major dilemma in their schools. Several studies have identified that there are particular groups who remain significantly vulnerable to being bullied in the
Bullying is defined as a dynamic and repetitive and persistent patterns of verbal and / or non-verbal behaviors directed by one or more children on another child that are intended to deliberately inflict physical, verbal or emotional abuse in the presence of a real or perceived power differential (Selekman and Vessey). In other words, it is a group of people who directed an act to threaten, hurt or frighten that individual when he is unable to defend himself. The article outlined and covered the details of bullying – corresponding behaviors, place, time and reasons of bullying, what intervention works and does not work. It is thorough and analytical; clear and specific.

Bullying can be linked to many negative effects on different aged people. Children that are bullied often experience harmful physical, school, and mental health concerns. These children are more likely to associate with depression and anxiety, amplified feelings of sadness and solitude, changes in sleep and eating patterns, loss of attentiveness in activities they used to like, health illnesses, decreased educational achievement like, GPA, standardized test scores, and school involvement. They are most likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school, and although children don’t usually retaliate, 12 out of 15 school shooting cases the shooter was being bullied. The bullies themselves often may feel disconnected from school and dislike school, get into fights, vandalize property and leave school early. Moreover, recent Victorian research has revealed that bullying action is related with an increased likelihood of robbery, violent behavior and splurge drinking. Impact on bystanders often include being unwilling to go to school, feel scared or helpless to act and guilty for not acting, have increased mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, and have increased use of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs. When bullying continues and a school doesn’t move forward, the whole school climate and culture can be destructively affected making a huge impact on the school. This influences on student learning and commitment, staff confinement and satisfaction and parental certainty
Bullying in schools is believed to be a normal part of school life, however, when people begin to have this mentality, they forget that bullying is physically and psychologically harmful to both the bully and the victim, therefore, bullying must be eradicated from schools by raising awareness and increasing supervision. The act of bullying or the fear of being bullied underlies almost everything kids do these days. No longer can students leave the gossip and self-doubt at school and go home for an overnight respite. Now, with internet connections thorough cell phones or computers, they never get a break from the drama. Research indicates that bullying can have some long term psychological effects.
Children and teenagers can be very cruel at their young age and start bullying each other. This bullying can leave drastic impacts on a vulnerable child, which would not know how to handle the situation. The impact of bullying has raised a toll on suicide rates for youngsters. Bullying is something real and should not be avoided; it comes in many different forms. All forms of bullying get to one, one way or another. Children and young adults getting bullied for their physical appearances can really damage and lower their self-esteem and cause destruction within themselves and their families. Recently, the only way these
Have you ever bullied someone before or are you a victim of being bullied? Well, bullying is described as an immoral and aggressive behaviour where it has an impact on one person to another. This is caused by people assuming they are dominant, superior in age or position. The bully also brings that unnatural anger on someone and tries to victimised them so that they can feel good about themselves. Bullying can occur in a range of places from schools to public places, even at home. Now these days technology is also a problem because of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is becoming an infamous territory to battle their victims as it is often used to humiliate them on social media. As a result, we can say that schools’ bullies have become a huge problem these days. The concept of a bully is that some students who lack in specific qualities in the eyes of the bully is a target for them in order for them to become popular. To be honest, bullying is a bad sign which results in lowering victim’s emotions and this may lead to mental illnesses such as depression and suicidal attempts. Actually, bullying to be present in school should not be tolerated in every possible way because it is violating a person’s human rights. This speech talks about the causes and the consequences of bullying as well the opinions to persuade you to be against bullying in schools and in general.
Are you aware that many kids encounter bullying as they grow up? As a teenager, I also experienced harassment in school. It was influenced by factors such as skin color, culture, and ethnicity. There are different categories of bullying depending on their nature. The first type is physical bullying. It occurs when the body of an individual and their possessions are damaged. It takes the form of stealing, destruction of property spitting and being beaten up. The second type is verbal bullying. It involves actions such as calling people names. In some instances, people bully others regarding their physical appearance. Other threats regard the social status of the family. The third category is social bullying which happens when individual desires to hurt the reputation of an individual. It usually occurs between age-mates. It occurs in two main ways which are exclusion and loss of trust. Prohibition leads to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Loss of confidence happens when there is the breaking of a long-term relationship. Lastly, there is cyber bullying which occurs through the use of media devices such as phones and computers. (National Centre Against Bullying,2017).
School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.
Thesis: Bullying in its many forms affects all people no matter age, gender, and class, but the effects can be very dangerous and very hurtful.
