Opponents of same-sex parents argue that sexual orientation has a negative impact on child development, while proponents argue that the relationship between the child and parents is what matters. National, state, and local governments are faced with the controversy surrounding same-sex parenting. People have very strong opinions on both sides of the argument. Children and adolescents who are under lesbian or gay parents have normal child development compared with children under heterosexual parents. These children develop normally socially, mentally, and academically.

It is not a problem limited to same-sex couples. Infertile women and older couples may turn to either method for children. Another popular claim is that children need both fathers and mothers or face delinquency, early sexual activity, missed social cues and even gender disorders (“Ten Arguments…”). This is also true, children who grow up without one parent or the other are more likely to face one or more of these problems. But, again it is not a problem exclusive to children raised by homosexual parents. In the United States alone, 20 million children are raised by a single parent (“Gay Rights”). Children raised by one heterosexual parent is just as likely to face difficulties as children raised by two homosexual parents. Gays/Lesbians are not allowed to be married, but are allowed to be civilly united, which grants the same rights as marriage. When they grant almost all the same rights as marriage, then it is the same thing as marriage. Although there are some people that think that the U.S. government would be harmed by recognizing any thing that has to do with Gays/Lesbians, there would come no harm from allowing this. To sum up, the children experience different upbringings based on the couple raising them. Should not children have the same morals to abide by growing up? Based on the type of couple raising the child, they may have a different outlook on ideas than the one raised by the opposing type of couple.
