Coke – Ethical Issues: The Recall
Introduction
Coca-Cola or often referred as Coke is a carbonated beverage manufactured by the Coca-Cola
Company. Coca-Cola is developed originally by a pharmacist, Dr. John Pemberton in 1886. Later the
formula and brand was brought in 1889 by Asa Candler. The Coca-Cola Company headquartered in
Atlanta since 1892, becoming the world largest beverage company. The red and white trademark of
Coca-Cola is the best-known brand symbol in the world. Today, over 500 beverage brands are sold
in more than 200 countries. The daily serving of Coca-Cola beverages are estimated at 1.9 billon
globally. The major problem faced by Coke is being unethical to promote its beverage sales among

It then donates 1 piece of software to a school for every 10 that parents purchase (Hickox 1996).
Consequent harm of consumption soft drink to health
Carbonated soft drink is one the most consumed refreshments in the United States, second only to
water. In 1998, a claim has made by Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO, M. Douglas Ivester. He said,
“Actually, our product is quite healthy. Fluid replenishment us a key to health … Coca-Cola does
a great service because it encourages people to take in more and more liquids.” In fact, a few
previous studies found that regular consumption of carbonated soft drink could pose to health
risks such obesity, osteoporosis, tooth decay and erosion, heart disease, kidney stone and
addictiveness.
Strong evidence shows that soft drinks contribute to the development of diabetes. The Harvard
School of Public Health study over 90,000 women for eight years. The nurses who said they had one
or more servings a day of a soft drink were twice as likely to have developed type 2 diabetes
during the study than those who rarely had these beverages.
Frequent consumption of soft drinks instead of milk or other dairy products will result in
The impact sugary sodas have on our bodies is known by everybody. But this didn’t stop people consume large quantities of sugary beverages. This is what the change observed in the consumption of such drinks appears to be curious. In accordance with the report, the average American has cut down on soda consumption by 25 percent in the last 25 years.
Roughly half of Americans consume more than 2.6 glasses of a carbonated beverage each day. Did you know that if you place a nail in a bottle of Coca-Cola it would dissolve in just four days? If it can do that to a nail, just imagine what it will do to a human body.
While obesity is something that can generally be seen in physical appearance, things like brittle teeth and diabetes aren’t as easily seen, along with many other health complications. According to Kanigel, soda contains acid that causes teeth to decay. She says the acid is more damaging than “solid sugar…in candy” (P?). The acid in soda eats away at the protective outer layer of teeth, causing them to deteriorate. I can attest to this because it has happened to me, and I am still recovering from the effects. As a child, my parents did not monitor my soda intake. I did not know any better, so soda was all I drank. That eventually led to many cavities which would later lead to decaying spots on my teeth. I now have permanently sensitive teeth. It wasn’t long after the spots started showing up that I learned a hard lesson; soda was not for me. I was reluctant to drinking water due to the lack of flavor, but it is now my favorite drink. Making that choice to put down soda and pick up water was the best decision I ever made. Another negative effect of drinking soda is diabetes. The excess sugar consumed causes the bodies insulin to increase. The amount of people suffering type two diabetes has significantly increased since 1980. In the 80’s only “6.6 million” people suffered, but that number has now grown to “20.8 million” people (Kanigel P). In addition to that, women taking in “one or more sugary
Soda contains Phosphoric acid, which interferes with the bodies ability to absorb calcium and can lead to osteoporosis, cavities and bone softening. For steric acid also interact with stomach acid, slowing digestion and blocking nutrient absorption, which then leads to obesity. The xx obesity has on your body is astronomical. For example, you could have hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, joint problems, cancer, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, gynecological problems. “osteoporosis & sodas (softDrinks): phosphoric acid and other causes.” WebMD. Due to their artificial sweeteners, the soda drinks, as well as their diet versions, are often responsible for the occurrence
An increase in reports has given rise to speculation of the relationship to artificial sweeteners combined with the increased risk of metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes, obesity, and heart attacks. The same health risks sweeteners were created to prevent are presently correlated to their use. In fact, an increase of 36% for metabolic syndromes and 67% for type II diabetes alone has occurred. Regular consumption of one diet coke per day for seven years could double the chance of cardiovascular diseases as well. The health problems artificial sweeteners cause are long-lasting on top of increasing a person’s average yearly medical
John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist and “cash-strapped morphine addict,” created Coca-Cola in 1886. He used a French wine called Vin Mariani as his product to replicate. Coca-Cola was different because it was water-based, not wine-based, and included kola nut, caffeine, coca leaf extract, and sugar. It was originally sold as a medicine, a “brain tonic” that “Cures Morphine and Opium Habits and Desire for Intoxicants.” Later broke and ill from his stomach problems and morphine addiction, Pemberton sold the patent to Coca-Cola to Asa Candler, who later officially created The Coca-Cola Company.
In 1866 the curiosity of a pharmacist from the state of Atlanta by the name of Dr. John S. Pemberton led to him creating a beverage with a distinctive taste. The taste was so distinctive that it was immediately questioned if it can be sold in soda fountains. Dr. Pemberton then took his distinctive tasting beverage to a very good friend of his, Frank M. Robinson who was also a pharmacist. They both agreed to add carbonated water and sampled the drink around for reviews. After they received positive reviews on their new drink they decide to take things to the next level and become business partners. They agreed to sell their drink in the market and named the drink Coca-Cola. They also created its trademarked logo, which is still used today.
According to Kim, Hyuksoo, Yangsun, Jungsun, and Ki-Young,(2016,201-210) most people understand that consumption of sodas is not good for their health. The rate of soda consumption has been decreasing over the years though younger adults have been consuming more sodas than the older adults. Questions have been posed if the science opposing soda has solid findings as those of smoking. Despite the fact that soda has the potential of causing diabetes type 2 relative to those who do not drink soda, is that supposed to mean that the determining factor is soda or is there a possibility of confounding factors that influence a person to drinking soda and diabetes? Reasons for declining the warning labels on soda outweigh those of posting the warning sign.
Coca-Cola was invented by John Pemberton the Coca-Cola Company began in 1886. With more than 1.9 billion consumers a day, in more than 200 countries, Coca-Cola is dedicated to being the world’s largest beverage company by maintaining and gaining customers. Customer preference is a core value to coke. Coke has dedicated itself to meet the thirst needs of every customer. They engage with their customers at home, restaurants, sporting events. The history of Coca Cola began in 1886 when Dr. John S Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist created a tasty soft drink which could sell at soda fountains. Since then, Coca Cola grew to be a global brand and touched great heights. Today, it sells across 200 countries and is just as popular across all the markets and nations. The company today, owns or licenses and markets more than 500 non alcoholic beverage brands. The brand has only few major competitors in the global market. The daily servings of coca cola are estimated to be at 1.9 billion globally. (Coca-Colahellenic, n.d.) This is just another proof of the popularity of the brand which has a very large and diversified
The Coca-Cola Company leads the world in manufacturing, marketing and distributing soft drinks. The company is styled as unstoppable due to its universal appeal ranging from Minute Maid orange juice, Dasani purified water to PowerAde sports drinks and Fuze vitamin-enhanced water. Indeed, despite the fact that Coca-Cola has ruled the drink market for the twenty years, however, "the soft-drink giant is struggling as per-capita consumption of soda has hit multi-decade lows."
Coca-cola boasts of being the world’s largest beverage company serving approximately one billion customers daily. The most dominant products distributed by Coca-cola are Coke, Fanta, Sprite and Diet Coke. This strategy is aimed at ensuring that every customer gets satisfied whenever they use a Coca-cola brand. Coca-cola has large distributions across the globe making it the largest distributor in the world. The late Roberto Goizueta termed Coca-cola to be an American company with large international business and a sizeable American business (Ferrell, 2008). This has helped a lot with brand selling as it is the most recognized brand in the whole world. “Coca-Cola has the most valuable brand name in the world and, as one of the most visible companies worldwide, has a tremendous opportunity to excel in all dimensions of business performance” (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2008). Coca-cola, however, has not been smoothly running over the decades in operation. It has on numerous occasions been criticized for overlooking some ethical standards that it should have rather upheld. This essay aims at looking into some of the issues facing Coca-cola, the most significant of them, how they were resolved and how Coca-cola should have solved them.
The Coca - Cola Company began its legacy in 1886. Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, created the patented Coca - Cola syrup for sale in fountain
Coca-Cola is a big recognized brand that produces many products than just soda drinks. With all the money and brand recognition the company possesses, there are possibilities for the company to past the scandals and keep up in the business market, like we have discovered the company has invested money to cover illicit activities. However, it is very important for the company to act ethically and respond to the scandals that the company has been accused. If Coca-Cola responds morally correct, it will shows the customers that the company cares about social responsibility, but if the company does not act fast and ethically, it exists the possibilities that the company’s sales keep declining.
