The European exploration was a product of several different aspects and inventions. One of these inventions was the caravan. This enabled them to sail easier and faster against the wind. Another improvement was the advancement in cartography. This helped navigators explore waters easier and find lands that haven't been previously discovered. Lastly, the final invention that helped was the printing press. This helped produce more maps to spread the cartography all over. 1.) The desire to find new trade routes to Asia was one of the motivations for European explorations. Europeans were seeking the wealth of Africa and Asia. They wanted profit, they wanted gold. The spice market was also a huge profit of trading and several countries tried to gain control of spice trade. Another motivation was God and religion. Europeans wanted to spread the teachings of the Gospel to other parts of the world. They believed it was their duty to spread the word of God. Lastly, land was another motivation for European explorations. Some rulers, especially the King of Spain, and the King of Portugal, wanted to claim as much land as they could. The more land and money a country owned, the better their chance of domination in Europe.
The cut-off resulted in the lowering of economic success throughout Europe, because European civilizations could not trade goods with other civilizations. The economic motive caused Europeans to look for success in the west for “God, Glory, and Gold”, which inspired explorers to make dangerous travels across the Atlantic Ocean. The travel safety was improved when Europeans had developed sturdy seaworthy ships and new technological advances. The advancements on the ships included the use of the axial rudder and lateen sails with a square rig, which improved the ships to be more mobile against the wind and also make easier turns in naval warfare. The advancements of ships were very important, but useless without the knowledge of how to utilize the improvements. Fortunately, explorers possessed the knowledge of specific wind patterns in the Atlantic
The discovery of the Americas also allowed new trading options and financial expansion which benefited all of Europe.
Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, European exploration and expansion thrived. Portugal led the way in this movement of exploration with their development of efficiently built ships known as caravels, seafaring devices such as compasses and astrolabes, and cutting-edge naval academies. Various European countries, including Spain, England, France, etc., followed Portugal’s example by utilizing their progressive naval technology. These technological advancements led to the crossing of oceans and eventually the circumnavigation of the world. These Portuguese sailing techniques were implemented by explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and Bernal Castillo allowing them to travel by sea to places such as Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas. These nations and explorers were persuaded to put in the time and effort to complete these complex expeditions by three essential motivations. Financial gain, political dignity, and religious expansion were fundamental motivators for the European Age of Exploration.
During the exploration of the New World Portugal, France, and Spain had one thing in common to search for new resources such as sugar, spices, and gold. The European arrival in the Americas set a new era off known as the Columbian Exchange which changed the America’s forever. Native Americans introduced the Europeans to several new crops such as corn, squash, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. Portugal set off for a search for sea route to Asia, while in competition with Spain who was also seeking an active root to Asia as well. The French exploration occurred later after the “New World” was found, and their target was to find a Northwest Passage where they hoped for a route through North America to the pacific.

How did their journey help Europe the understand the known world “new world”?- Henry Hudson helped to discover new sea routes, short cuts and new ‘islands’. Recording his findings dates and lengths of his journeys in his journal not only did this help to let people know about the new “cool stuff” out there, but it also helped to expand the knowledge around the voyages themselves. His journeys helped to widen the field to new and interesting findings for example, Gold, spies and new materials that would be found and bought back on ships. Henry Hudson also helped to expand on the compass when he was travelling through the Northern Passage, he also allowed people to
When moving through Europe, Crusaders and certain cultures mixed ideas. An example of this is art, music, and intellectual discoveries. One key invention could be the improvement of shipbuilding and navigation. Without these things, we may not have discovered America or other continents. This spread many ideas and cultures as people took these ideas and shared them.
During the 15th through 16th centuries, The Portuguese and Spanish explorers were very attracted to valuable resources, new land, and trade routes. These motives encouraged them to seek out new explorations and search for items that would benefit their home countries. Common resources that both the Spanish and Portuguese sought out included silks, porcelain, spices, persian horses, silver, and gold (Chasteen, 2001). Although the Portuguese and Spanish explored and sought out new land for many of the same reasons, they also had some different causes for exploration which were often very specific to the needs and goals of Portugal and Spain.
The Age of Exploration was a time of struggle and wealth for many European countries. The pursuit of a trade route to the Far East led many countries across the ocean, looking for the great spice cities that were rumored by Marco Polo. These countries knew that whoever found the shortest or best route would become rich, very quickly. Explorers from many European countries embarked on journeys that not even they had any clue where they were going.
