The Failure Of Gender Equality

Women’s struggle for equality will remain relevant in the future as a global issue because every country today still struggles to obtain successful women’s equality. Women today are determined to fight for their rights, rights that are detrimental to the success of society. The struggle for women’s equality is something that has plagued women for centuries. Societies throughout history have been ruled by the iron fist of men, in royal families, the working class, and even within the households. This is something that is most common in todays underdeveloped countries, women are treated as being less than men and therefore do not deserve the same rights. This however is something that women have recognized as a problem and are unwavering in their fight to establish equal rights, whether it be in the United States or even Africa, the cry for equality is the same.

From the beginning of time there has been a distinction between the accepted roles of males and females. For ages men have been viewed as the family provider and women as the family caretaker. Although new roles developed with different eras, the same ideals have held for centuries now. Since the late 1800’s, the idea of “feminism,” or the social, political, and economic equality for females, has begun to shake the foundations of gender roles. Gender inequality has been the main focus for many centuries through the use of discrimination and oppression women were exploited. Where women had very little rights of their own or a voice in society but made many sacrifices to achieve equal rights whether it be in employment or other areas of inequality. As men were seen as masculine breadwinners and women as more feminine by looking after the family and raring of children.

Equality, gender roles, and restrictions are important topics that many activists, leaders, and speakers have worked towards in order to provide to the world. The society we have now has been created in part by the determination and perseverance of their actions, speeches, and rallies. The world was a different place about 10 years ago, 20 years ago, and even more than 50 years ago. Associating women with household work and children, and men with difficult jobs and hard work, were can be observed throughout time that were previously set in past centuries. Gender inequality has been a dominant and consistent struggle of human culture since its existence. To this day, women constantly face oppression, unjust treatment, and less opportunities. For centuries, women have played inferior roles compared to men, especially in marriage. When a man and a woman would wed, it was understood that the woman would serve her husband’s needs and demands. Over the centuries of human existence, however, many feminists and progressive revolutionaries demanded change in the treatment of females.

Gender imbalance is a worldwide problem that still affects people constantly and extends in various cultures. In Appiah’s “Making Conversation”, he converses about how some people in the world are not accepting others culture depending on who they are and what they believe in while in Hvistendahl’s “Missing: 163 Million Women”, she shares observations about how men are being more valued over women based on their gender. It is abundantly striking about how majority of the women in the world are being rejected by other men due to the fact that they are less superior than them according to their gender. It is important we take action to reduce gender imbalance because people should gain the opportunity to live in a fair society without being mistreated by who they are.

Society expects men to be brave and strong. They are expected to be in charge of their families by making the most important decisions and supporting them financially meanwhile, women are dependent and cannot achieve much by themselves. One can go back to after 8000 BC and see that men hunted animals meanwhile women stayed at home to care for their children and gather fruits and plants (Reilly). All of the early imposed leadership expectations have been a part of what has shaped the gender expectations in the present society. Even though men and women are capable of performing the same tasks, traditional gender roles keep both genders away from gaining social equality. One can see a difference when both genders are compared in education, employment, child care, domestic duties, and marriage. Although women have made many advances leading up to the amount of equality present in the 21st century, men still manage to have more rights and do not have to fight for equality.

Being a woman and working in an environment full of women, gender inequality is transparent everywhere. Gender can determine how much education one gets, how much money one earns, what jobs one is qualified for, and how one is treated in society. Men are in the dominant group of society, while women are subjected to the subordinate group. Women’s duties and appearances are under immense pressure due to western culture. Women are pressured to be sexually attractive and to serve men.

Gender gap is a serious problem that the whole world is facing, there’s many barriers and reasons behind this issue, the gender inequality changes over time and across different countries. Hence gender inequality is attributable to all communities, where averagely men are much better placed in economic, political and social hierarchies as compared to women.

The issue pertaining to women’s rights is not one that is new. In the past, there were and still are typical differences between men and women, between the roles they play in society and the way they model their behavior. However, since those times significant changes have been found. Today gender roles have been loosened, allowing a strong impact on society. Women in the Western nations are no longer pleased with the role of being a homemaker; they would rather prefer to make their own careers and have the opportunity to have the same rights as men (Howie, 2010). This aspect means that women’s rights are built on freedom that can be observed as a quality, but not a problem. Women today still continue to fight for their rights.

Today, women still do not have equal rights. For example, the gender wage gap is still a large issue in society, along with many other issues of gender inequality. The agenda of advocating for woman rights has been there since time immemorial. Women have been undermined and discriminated since biblical times where they were assigned low profile roles and responsibilities that are demeaning. Women were assigned households tasks and were left at home to look after the children. On the other hand, men assumed leadership positions and were involved in making major decisions for instance policy making and economic decisions. That progress was a necessary step for our modern nation, but such a big change has been a factor in the breakdown of our nation 's families. In the past 50 years, divorce rates have more than doubled. In the present day, it is just as likely that a married couple will divorce as it is that they will stay together ("Marriage and Divorce"). The push for women 's equality has been a factor in the breakdown of the American family by increasing women 's individuality, complicating family decisions, and moving women into the workforce.

Gender inequality is a social problem that is widespread in society. It is referred to as the unfair treatment of individuals based on one 's gender. Historically, laws have opposed women to go to school, access certain jobs, and purchase property. Gender inequality has been experience through culture – honor-killing, sex-selective abortion, and society – occupation, gender roles, and education. The social expectations of men and women differ between cultures that are constructed socially and culturally. These expectations are displayed in roles, and behavior believed both by men and women and their interdependent relationships. Gender inequality can be further understood through the structure of sexism. Discrimination takes place in gender inequality for the reason that men and women are treated on the basis of gender alone (Amjad, R., Ashfaq, M., Kousar, R., Saghir, A., 2010).

The oppression of women is based on false assumption and preconceived notions by the male domination world, has been obvious and responsible for paving the way for serious gender issues to emerge. Due to the narrow realms of activity in society, deprived from essential human rights, restricted educations scope, open to unhealthy physical and mental abuse, this society has not given women the opportunity to rise to their full potential. The impact of gender discrimination has not only affected the future of the women today but it has resulted in the slow progress of human mind in general.
