The definition of a hero is an individual, man or woman, in which he or she exhibits immense courage, fortitude, and being humble. In today 's culture, one might think of Batman or Wolverine as heroes, however, in J.R.R Tolkien 's The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins redefines the entirety of the definition of a hero and deemed like no other. Throughout his adventure across middle-earth with the dwarves, Bilbo exemplifies several of these qualities. In contrast to both Norse and Anglo conceptions of heroism, Bilbo Baggins redefines the conception and definition of hero.

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien was a prelude to is amazing book series called THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The Hobbit tells a story of a hobbit name Bilbo Baggins, and a company of dwarves on their adventure to retake the dwarf’s home from an evil dragon.

As the story of “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien develops, readers of this book can see that one of the main characters experience a metamorphosis. From the beginning of the story throughout the end, Bilbo goes through a change, but for the better. Tolkien’s main character Bilbo in “The Hobbit” shows the theme of becoming a hero by gaining courage and confidence as the story progresses.

Firstly, Bilbo grows bolder and more curious as he begins his adventures. The first stage of a hero’s journey is the Separation, in which the hero leaves his known world, or home, and crosses into the Unknown (Thompson and Harris 7). Bilbo resides in Bag-End, his hobbit-hole, where he lives as a “very respectable [hobbit who]...never had any adventures or did anything unexpected” (Tolkien 2). Bag-End represents Bilbo’s known world, where he lives comfortably and complacently. Next, Bilbo undergoes the first step of the hero’s journey, the Call, which occurs when the protagonist is called to adventure (Thompson and Harris 8). Bilbo Baggins is the main character in this book and his life sonorously fits into in a typical hero quest journey. The three primary components of Bilbo’s quest are, the call to adventure, tests, allies and enemies, and the reward. In the book The Hobbit, Bilbo’s life is very plain and simple until he embarks on a marvelous journey with thirteen dwarfs and the wizard Gandalf, together they go on an obstacle filled journey to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the dragon. Throughout the story Bilbo and the Dwarfs are tested several times unit the get to the last stage. Therefore the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is one of the classic hero quest stories because of the many affairs that resemble the hero quest cycle.

The novel revolves around the protagonist Bilbo Baggins and his journey not only of recovering the treasure from Smaug, but his journey becoming a hero. Through the main character Bilbo Baggins Tolkien changed my perspective on what a mythic hero is suppose to be. When the term “mythic hero” is brought up I visualize someone that is a stouthearted a warrior namely Achilles or Odysseus to be exact not a hobbit. A little friendly, good-natured, brilliant hobbit. To put it bluntly, he is the polar opposite of Achilles and Odysseus. Despite the fact Bilbo Baggins isn 't the typical mythological hero, in many ways he has the attributes of a hero. J. R. R. Tolkien ventured away from the archetypical hero we often see in Greek and Roman mythology.

The novel, because it includes characters such as trolls, elves, giants, goblins, and others is the reason that this story is a fairytale. This fairytale centers on a little hobbit known as Bilbo Baggins. It tracks the expedition of a group of dwarves, and a wizard, Gandalf, and their burglar, Bilbo as they travel to retrieve treasure that had been stolen from them long ago. The hobbit journeyed far, starting at Bilbo 's tiny, earthy home in the ground, then to Mirkwood forest, and to the Mountain where the dragon Smaug nests with its vast treasures. Tolkien makes good use of imagery in his writing, and it is quite apparent in this work. The imagery is typically either dark or light and directly correlates to Bilbo’s mood. J.R.R Tolkien uses light and dark imagery in his novel The Hobbit to effectually set an uncanny and secretive mood and to foretell future activities such as Bilbo 's expedition through Mirkwood and his escapade in the Mountain.

With power comes greediness, with good comes evil, and together forms C.S. Lewis’s and Tolkien’s philosophy, that evil is a product of corrupted good.

In the Middle Earth, around the third age, Bilbo Baggins embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. Throughout the obstacles and hardships of the adventure, Bilbo Baggins transforms from a man of doubts and comfort to a hero with a newfound confidence and leadership.

Plot Summary – It takes place with Bilbo in his shire and usually hobbits don’t go on an adventure but he did. There was twelve dwarves and one wizard, Gandalf, and they came to Bilbo’s home to get his help on an adventure to try and help Thorin take back his lonely mountain (Erabor). So Balin gives Bilbo a contract providing his services to help the dwarves and the wizard. At first he doesn’t sign it because he could die. Then after he didn’t see any of them in his house. He signed it because then he wanted to help them out by going with them to the lonely mountain and along the way they rested in a cave and Bilbo’s sword glowed blue and that means goblins are nearby. The goblins were actually right under them and then the floor came apart and they went in the goblins lair in the mountain. The goblins

The first chapter in the book begins in a small village, following the book of The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins celebrates his 111th (or eleventy-first, as it is called in the story) birthday on the same day, 22 September, that his younger cousin and adopted heir Frodo Baggins celebrates his coming of age at thirty-three. At the birthday party, Bilbo departs from the Shire, the land of the Hobbits. Bilbo does so by using the magic ring (that he had found on his journey) to disappear and is aided by Gandalf the Wizard with a flash and puff of smoke, leading many in the Shire to believe he has gone mad. He leaves Frodo his remaining belongings, including his home, Bag End, and the Ring. It becomes apparent that

Tolkien uses a Fantasy / Mythical theme throughout the book. The book has different battles and skirmishes that occur. They have to fight off Orcs and the Dark Riders all throughout the story. I believe this book is told by the third person point of view. It is a way to help the readers understand and relate to the story. The title gives you a hint and explains what the whole point of the book is about. In this book, Frodo’s biggest quest is finding all the people that will be a part of the Fellowship of the Ring.
