‘’ The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop is overloaded with fascinating and bountiful description and imagery which help readers to visualize the actions in the poem. The author use of imagery, symbols and tones that allows the reader to visualize the fish and create a relationship with him. The poem displays Bishop ecological awareness that leads her to accept the relationship between human beings and animal. The poem at the beginning is a narration of what happened in a particular fishing day. The speaker narrates the poem of her catching a big fish. The narrators unspoken and self-transforming reaction to this fish, conveyed largely through imagery. In Bishop narrations about the fish, her commercial attitude is reflected. She says ‘’the frightening gills ‘’ (24-26). It creates a negative image of something gills. She uses another simile to help the reader picture the struggle of the fish. Then she relates to the fish on a personal basis. ‘’ I looked onto his eyes I admired his sullen face, the mechanism of his jaw’’. Bishop portrait the fish stare like a ‘’ tipping ‘’ of an object towards the light. That observation shows that the poet was passionate, also there was a connection made between her and the fish .Then, she starts to give further details about the fish by describing the way the fish looks like and its pattern and texture (20-21). She gives a whole different image of what exactly she is trying to convey when she mentioned “tiny white sea-lice” (18-19). She also introduced a new color that she didn’t mention in the beginning of the poem. From her point of view the reader know that the fish is venerable as she describes. The fish needs oxygen to live and without the water there is a possibility for it to die
