The short story “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod is narrated by a man who comes from a fishing family. His mother’s side of the family has forever lived and worked by the sea and continues this tradition. The narrator’s father always wanted to be an academic, but worked on the boat to support his family. Through this passage it is evident that the parents’ characters clash in many aspects of their lives and are in constant conflict. MacLeod demonstrates this through the use of repetition, the contrast in other unrelated ideas, and through information that is withheld.

The use of the imagery here allows the reader to take a closer look and see the beauty in the barnacle. “And underneath two or three, / rages of green weed hung down” (20-21). Colors are also used again when the speaker states “The dramatic reds and blacks” (30). Yet another line using color states “and the pink swim bladder” (32).Using color makes the parts of the fish pop out to the reader. The entire poem is filled with visual imagery, but there are also lines that give the reader auditory and sensory imagery as well.

Antwone "Fish" Fisher is a complex individual who has been through a great deal of psychological and sociological conflicts in his short life. His mother was arrested and then abandons him, he was abused physically and emotional, and then lived on the streets. In short, nearly everything bad that can possible happen to a person has happened to young Antwone Fisher before he has reached adulthood. In his autobiographical book Finding Fish (2001), Fisher explains how the torment that he experienced in his youth shaped the man that he would become in adulthood. Although this story tells about one young man's difficulties in life and how he had to overcome obstacles in order to be a functional and positive member of society, it is really a story about the larger human condition and how every person becomes affected by their experiences.

She questions how she could convey her excitement when it came to her turn to catching a fish and recalls it was the “white twisting fish” that hauled up onto the boat. By doing this, she paints a clear picture for the readers to vision themselves in the moment that was the peak of her passion. She was fond of the moment until her father opinionated that he “[doesn’t] like to see fish caught.” Instead of reasoning with her father, she realizes that it was simply a statement of his own feeling and ultimately it was her decision if to continue fishing. She claims her passion for fishing “slowly extinguished” from the words of her father.

The fish in “Fish Story” symbolizes a transitional period for the boy, who acts as the narrator. Many times it is said that your eyes are the windows to your soul, in “Fish Story” the fish’s eyes acted as a symbolic window into the narrator’s soul. Being a boy of 10 years old he is suspended between the world of childhood innocence and raw uncensored adulthood. From early on the boy connects with the fish as he is describing the fish’s eyes, “The fish, in turn, studied me with its round, obsidian eyes, which had a gold lining to their perimeter, like pyrite” (p. 1, par. 5, Bass, 2009).

Similar to the previous passage, this is another passage that is filled with children’s carefreeness and innocence. It is also very poetic and lyrical, as shown through the use of figurative language to compare the boat with a huge white fish. The narrator and his friends happily chat and laugh together in the dark night and thus develop communal spirit and friendship. Reading this passage more carefully, the readers may realize that the seemingly straightforward writing is actually not very simple. The sensitivity to the natural beauty and the poetic language in this story can hardly belong to a child’s narrative. In the poem “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop the speaker uses a lot of imagery to try to describe to the reader the hardships that this fish must have faced throughout its life. In a rusted, oil leaking, rented boat the speaker hauls up an enormous fish and then stares at it going into detail on its appearance. As you continue to read the speaker begins an ironic description of the fish. The fish was old, already escaping five separate fishers, he excepts his fate and does not fight to be freed again. The different pieces of fishing line caught in his jaw shows how many times he either escaped or was let go by the other fishers. Then the description of the rented boat, the parts of the boat that all turned into a rainbow.
