The story behind the Four Noble Truths is that Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) took a path of self-denial yet did not find truth to the point when he sat down under a tree (Bo tree). He discovered an enlightened and obtained the information he had been searching for. He sat there for forty-nine days and was tempted by demons. This way, he discovered the Four Noble Truths. The Four Noble Truths are key elements that make up Buddha’s teaching and understanding Buddhism. These truths are called Noble because it frees us from suffering. Due to the Four Noble Truths, the Buddha is often compared to a doctor or a healer. He determined the life’s condition, makes a diagnosis and provides a solution for the cure. Life consists of bad things such as suffering, getting sick, people dying. Therefore, these bad things that happen in our lives relate to the Four Noble Truths; the Four Noble Truths express that each individual goes through suffering, then the cause of suffering is identified which can eventually be prevented or can be cured if it is an illness. The Four Noble Truths are the truth concerning suffering, concerning the origin of suffering, concerning the stopping of suffering and lastly, the truth concerning the way that leads to the cessation of craving which is made up of eight steps called the Eightfold Path or Middle Way.
