In the book, The Freedom Writers Diary, the students came from violent backgrounds and neighborhoods. Because they attended a school with many privileged people, they were looked down on as drug users or gang members who were destined to die or become nonentities. Many of their teachers thought that because they grew up around drugs and violence, they were lost causes and would never change. Through the students’ efforts and other people’s help, they proved the close-minded people wrong and ended out coming out on top. The book depicts how many of the students changed into better people, who eventually became role models. One example of someone who changed drastically is the person from Diary 23. This person skipped school for three weeks because he was smoking and hanging out with friends. He came back to school and Ms. Gruwell was very concerned about him. When she asked why he didn't come to school he said, “Nobody cares about what I do so why should I bother to come to school?”(45) This proves that once others stop caring about children and their troubles, the children themselves …show more content…
This person was part of a gang in which one of the members shot and killed somebody. Somebody from their rival gang was being falsely accused of this murder. Since the author of this diary witnessed the murder, she had testify in court. Her family and friends constantly told her that she couldn't go against her own people. Before being in Ms. G’s class, she would have gladly protected her own, but she was rethinking her choice now. She saw the falsely accused man’s daughter, which reminded her of herself and how she felt when her father wrongfully went to jail. Because of the time she spent in Ms. Gruwell’s class and her past experiences, she decided to tell the truth, regardless of the consequences that would follow. Not only did she change, but she believed that she could change the way things were in the
The film Crips and Bloods has similar parallels to the film Freedom Writers. Specifically, Freedom Writers explains the dynamics of gang rivalry and how that rivalry, together with racial tensions, transformed a once top -performing high school to one of the most under -performing high schools in the country. Most notable is Erin Gruwell, a newly hired teacher, and her willingness to teach and educate a class that has been labeled as delinquent and not worth wasting resources on. It is important to note that the majority of Ms. Gruwell’s students were either a member of gang themselves, or participated in some form of gang warfare. Many of the kids from the film stressed the importance of “protecting their own” which meant that they had to
I have read many interesting diaries while reading “The Freedom Writers Diary”, but the diary that stuck to me the most was diary number 127.I am going to give advice to the teenager that wrote this diary. This diary has made me think twice and not one other diary in the book has made me do that. This diary is about how a young teen recently realizes that she was lesbian after her best friend tells her that she loved her.Once I kept reading I read she wasn’t excited to be lesbian because she thought to herself “How would they treat us?Would we still be welcomed in our little social group?”.I'm not saying that I have been through that situation but what I am saying is that people should never think about how other people treat them or if they
“Freedom Writers” is a powerful film that is based on a true story about a teacher named Erin Gruwell, who struggles to connect with her students to make them believe that they can succeed in life, and to show them that their lives, experiences, and knowledge is valuable, all while attempting to unify them and to overcome racial segregation and gang violence that is part of their daily lives. Gruwell focuses on introducing the concepts of discipline and obedience in her classroom. After they raise the money to bring her over, she tells them her experiences hiding Anne Frank. When Marcus tells her that she is his hero, she denies it, claiming she was merely doing the right thing. Her denial causes Eva to rethink lying during her testimony. When she testifies, she finally breaks down and tells the truth, much to some of her family members' dismay. Meanwhile, Gruwell asks her students to write their diaries in book form. She compiles the entries and names it The Freedom Writers Diary.
She thought that it was the right thing to do. yes, because it was the honest thing to do. her friends are mad at her because she could have lied and their buddy wouldn’t have gone to prison. And her dad doesn’t even want to talk to her.

They were stories of broken and dysfunctional homes, being kicked out of the house for being part of a gang, to being beaten up just because they were different. Reading these journals Mrs. “G” realized how similar each student’s stories were no matter the race, ethnicity or gender. Even though the students did not see eye to eye, they all had many things in common: they were all in gangs; they each had their own stories to tell; each student has dealt with the shooting of a friend, each student want to communicate to others, and each student wanted to be respected.

When I was still alive, I lived a mediocre life. I tried to a lot of good and tried to do nothing wrong. But that could not save me from my fate, on that lonesome night. Before that night, I had a young man stay with me at my house. I brought him in to help me around the house and take care of it after I die. He was like a son I never had, until something snapped on the inside.
“Everybody thinks you should be happy just because you’re young. They don’t see the wars that we fight every single day”. Brandy Ross, one of the students in the movie Freedom Writers once said. This is the predicament that the students in Woodrow Wilson High School faced every day. There are dead bodies on the street, the students have to protect themselves from other gangs, and most of them didn’t finish high school. It might not be a big issue for us because we didn’t face it by ourselves, but after watching this movie you will know that it is a significant thing to look at. The differences among race caused all of these problems, to deal with this is not easy at all. Freedom Writers show us that we can live our life with distinction because it shows us how to understand and accept dissimilarity that we have and also to
This is a story about freedom. A daring tale of a young boy taking a stand for what he believed in. The joys and horrors of a bold trek through the wild streets of Brookline, Massachusetts. This is an account of the first time I went out without my parents.
She did not want to leave without any mention, and took a piece of paper and penned her explanation. A note dedicated to Mauricio, for him to find on her bed. When she was done she rolled her way out of the building totally covert, and just like that she went missing.
